HARMAN Shows the Future of Automation with Connected Enterprise IoT Solution

Integrated AMX Automation and HARMAN Connected Services’ Solution is Demonstrated at InfoComm 2016

LAS VEGAS—HARMAN (NYSE: HAR), the premier connected technologies company for automotive, consumer and enterprise markets, is demonstrating the power of a connected enterprise Internet of Things (IoT) solution at InfoComm 2016 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The solution, which integrates IoT technology from HARMAN Connected Services, automation technology from AMX and audio and video technology from HARMAN Professional Solutions, will allow buildings to react seamlessly and intelligently to people within a space—all without user interaction.

“The ability to link HARMAN’s IoT solutions with AMX automation opens up truly powerful possibilities and really shows the potential of where we are headed,” says Kevin Morrison, SVP, Enterprise for HARMAN Professional Solutions. The solutions from HARMAN Connected Services provide the ability to passively track traffic flows, room occupancies and employee locations in the building. AMX automation solutions will then respond appropriately based upon where people are, updating room schedules, adjusting audio levels and updating digital signage. Morrison explains, “With better data that shows actual traffic patterns, occupancy counts and even identification of specific people within the building, the automation system becomes much more intelligent and responsive.”

HARMAN’s Connected Services division provides this capability through a complete, end-to-end IoT solution encompassing IoT gateways and sensors, online dash boarding and device and cloud-based analytics. HARMAN’s Occupancy and Dwell Time Counter (ODTC), for example, tracks how many people are in any space at any given time, tracking flow and duration in an innovative, non-intrusive way. A small sensor detects the heat and temperature values in a 60-square-foot area. Using a complex algorithm, the HARMAN ODTC solution is then able to use the sensor data to provide a completely accurate human count for the space, and because the sensors do not use motion alone to determine occupancy, actions such as lighting shutdown will not occur when occupants are in the room but motionless. “The possibilities for HARMAN’s Enterprise customers are endless,” says Andrew Till, VP, Technology for HARMAN Connected Services. “Corporations can leverage this technology to simplify and streamline basic operations, providing a better working environment and lowering costs by tracking room usage for energy savings. Retail and performance venues can provide a more tailored, targeted solution for guests by analyzing traffic flow, identifying peak traffic times and more.”

Another solution, the HARMAN In-Building Mobile Device Locator, monitors the radiation strength of WiFi and Bluetooth transmissions from mobile devices. The algorithm then uses that data to locate the specific device within a 3-meter radius, providing organizations insight into location and traffic patterns via the use of dashboards and heatmaps. The solution also allows organizations to register specific devices, providing intelligence that enables them to streamline security and monitor restricted areas more effectively. “In-Building Mobile Device Location helps organizations be more proactive,” Till says, “giving them the ability to understand how people move around the building and providing analytics for predicting all kinds of user behavior.”

By providing AMX automation systems access to data from HARMAN ODTC and In-Building Device Locator solutions, building AV systems and environmental controls will be able to respond intelligently and accurately based upon the needs of the customer. AV systems can turn off and schedules can update automatically when conference rooms are empty. Lighting can adjust and volume can attenuate based upon how many people are in a room. AV and digital signage systems will even be able to track customers throughout a space, providing them with content based upon where they have been in the facility.

“The breadth of our technology portfolio is allowing us to do things that aren’t possible right now through a single vendor,” says Mark Ureda, SVP, Products and Technology, HARMAN Professional Solutions. “Our engineers and developers are working hard to deliver a simple, intelligent enterprise IoT solution that leverages the best of what HARMAN has to offer. The solution we are showing at InfoComm demonstrates this capability, and is truly showing the future of AV automation—a future we are uniquely capable of delivering.”

HARMAN is demonstrating the Smart Building IoT solution, including its IoT gateway and smart sensors in Booth #N805 at InfoComm 2016.
