Kenny Mixx Making History With HARMAN’s JBL LSR Studio Monitors at Patchwerk Recording Studios

NORTHRIDGE, California – “I don’t just want to make hit records. I want to make history. And there’s a big difference.” These are the words of Kenny “Mixx” Daniels, chief mastering engineer at Patchwerk Recording Studios in Atlanta, Georgia. In recent months, some of the most prominent names in the hip-hop world have called on Kenny to master chart-topping hits. In his mastering room, Kenny relies on HARMAN’s JBL LSR6328P studio monitors with the LSR6312SP powered subwoofer.

“The LSR’s are my go-to monitors, I’ve been using them since I first found out about them,” Kenny said. “They let me hear the detail that I need and have helped make 2011 a very successful year.”

As a mastering engineer, Kenny’s commitment to the sonic detail of the record takes priority over all other concerns. “My approach in mastering a record is totally different than what you’re looking for in the tracking and mixing process,” he said. “I’m looking for time alignment and space as opposed to just volume. I’m looking for detail. I’m looking to provide the quality in a track that will enable it to last over time, with no distorted bass, extreme highs or those types of problems.”

Some of Kenny’s recent mastering projects include Nappy Dot Org by Nappy Roots, Amazin by Trina, T.I.’s new single “I’m Flexin’” and a project with hip-hop star Nelly.

“The Nappy Roots album stood out because so much of it was recorded with live instruments,” Kenny said. “So from my perspective, it was important to make sure that live, natural sound translated to the finished product. The JBL LSR6300 studio monitors helped me create a nice, big, ‘3D’ image that gave that real feel to the recordings.”

“The T.I. project went really well,” Kenny noted. “Elliott Carter recorded the vocals and Ray Seay mixed the track. They’re particular about sound quality and listening to the JBL’s they knew right off the bat, what sound they wanted.”
