HARMAN’s JBL VLA Line Arrays Deliver Powerful Performance in South Korea’s Daegu Stadium
ORLANDO, Florida – With a seating capacity of 66,000, Daegu Stadium is the largest stadium in South Korea. The stadium is striking in appearance, with a roof that combines design elements of traditional Korean houses with Teflon panels stretched across steel framing that provide protection from the elements while letting natural lighting into the stands.Daegu Stadium has hosted major sporting events including the World Cup, and will be the site of the 2011 IAAF (International Association of Athletics Foundations) World Championships in Athletics. To prepare for the IAAF and other future events, the city of Daegu decided to upgrade the stadium’s audio facilities, which now includes a large-scale JBL Variable Line Array (VLA) Series loudspeaker installation with 18 line arrays in distributed clusters.
The sound system was designed by Wrightson, Johnson, Haddon and Williams (WJHW) of Dallas, Texas, and the installation was performed by Sovico Corporation of Seoul, South Korea.
The Daegu system employs JBL VLA901 and VLA601 line arrays. The VLA Series loudspeakers were chosen because of their ability to provide high-impact sound reinforcement at throw distances beyond the reach of traditional speaker designs. In Daegu Stadium, the distances between the seats and the speakers can be more than 160 feet. The VLA901 and VLA601 speakers are suspended above and in front of the seats from beams that are part of the roof’s support structure. Eighteen distributed clusters of VLA901 and VLA601 loudspeakers are located throughout the stadium, to cover the seating areas and other locations where sound reinforcement is required.
JBL VLA Series loudspeakers are specifically designed for permanent installation applications where even coverage, high intelligibility and very high sound-pressure levels are required. The VLA Series offers a modular approach that gives system designers the ability to build large line array systems for bigger venues, or design smaller line array systems for use as distributed clusters in arenas and domed stadiums, and larger performance spaces and houses of worship.

Panavid Upgrades Audio System at Calvary Baptist Church In New York City With HARMAN JBL Loudspeaker System

ORLANDO, Florida – Calvary Baptist Church was founded in New York City in 1847 as an independent Baptist church, and has been in its current location on Manhattan’s West 57th Street since 1931. Over the years, the church has undergone a series of renovations, and most recently completed a major upgrade to its audio system with the installation of HARMAN’s JBL VRX Series Constant Curvature, AE Series Compact and CBT loudspeakers.
Professional audio/video services company Panavid, Inc. of Pompton Plains, New Jersey was contracted to complete the rigging and speaker installation, led by Client Relations Manager Dennis Mitchell. The Calvary Baptist Church system is based around left/right arrays of five JBL VRX932LAP powered loudspeakers per side, and two VRX918S 18-inch subwoofers per side. Complementing the two main arrays are two JBL AC28/95 compact loudspeakers for front fill and eight JBL AC15 ultra-compact loudspeakers placed under the balcony. There are also two JBL CBT 100LA column speakers in the choir area. Walter Loehr of Panavid did the system tuning and configuration.
“Calvary Baptist Church reached the point where they needed to have professional audio for their sermons and all their events, up to and including concerts,” explained Mitchell. “The church has an exceptional choir and music ministry, led by Colin Fowler, and music is an integral part of the services.”
Mitchell noted, “The system was very much designed as a collaborative effort after numerous conversations with myself, Michael Toombs and Miq Munoz of the Calvary Baptist Church, and Jim Peters of rep firm Sigmet Corporation. Panavid recommended using JBL VRX932LAP loudspeakers with matching VRX918S subwoofers because they are some of the best sounding speakers available; we’ve been amazed at their sound quality.”
Calvary Baptist Audio Engineer, Miq Munoz, said, “The new JBL system punches right through to the back of the room. I used to describe our sanctuary as ‘muddy.’ Not anymore. And low frequency support from the subwoofers is powerful and tight.”
“We also needed speakers that were as unobtrusive as possible, while being able to deliver the large-scale sound quality we needed, and the form factors of the VRX932LAP and VRX918S allow us to do that,” Munoz added. “We used the AC28/95 and AC15 speakers where space considerations precluded the use of larger speakers. We also chose AKG HM1000 hanging microphones to mic the choir with exceptional results.”
“Before the system was even tweaked, we were excited about the quality of the sound the JBL’s were providing to the listening space,” Mitchell continued. “After Walter Loehr used his software, mics and ears to fine-tune the system to the church sanctuary, the sound became even more outstanding. The church is very happy with their decision to install this system and I am thrilled to see their excitement.”

HARMAN’s JBL Professional Upgrades Its Popular CBT Series Models with New Brackets
ORLANDO, Florida – At InfoComm 2011, HARMAN’s JBL Professional announced the upgrade of its popular CBT Series (Constant Beamwidth Technology™) column loudspeakers, with the inclusion of new brackets that not only allow adjustment of up/down tilt, but also allow adjustment of the side-to-side aiming. The new swivel (pan)/ tilt brackets are packaged with the speakers, allowing increased versatility of aiming adjustment. In addition, grilles on models CBT 70J-1 and CBT 70JE-1 are thicker and stronger, which make these speakers more robust for use in temporary special event applications.JBL also announced optional MTC-CBT-FM flush-mount brackets for close-to-the-wall mounting of the CBT speakers. The bracket includes a wall piece plus speaker piece that combine together in a simple drop-in configuration.
“We are delighted to update our CBT lineup with new installation versatility,” said Rick Kamlet, Senior Marketing Manager for Commercial Installed Sound at HARMAN’s Loudspeaker Business Unit. “The update to the included brackets allows pan aiming, while the optional flush-mount brackets allow the columns to be mounted with their backs flush to the wall for instances requiring a low profile.”
JBL’s CBT Series column loudspeakers were the first speakers to incorporate JBL’s newly introduced and patented Constant Beamwidth Technology, using passive beam-forming components to deliver constant directivity coverage from a passive column, resulting in consistent frequency response at every listener location. Another of CBT’s technological firsts is the ability to switch the vertical coverage pattern of a non-powered speaker with a simple switch. The CBT 70J-1 model provides asymmetrical vertical coverage, sending more sound toward the far area of the room than to the near area, resulting in more consistent SPL levels within the room from front-to-back. CBT models range from an ultra-compact CBT 50LA-1 column all the way up to the large 2-way, high-fidelity 1000-Watt full-range CBT 70J-1/70JE-1 array, all at a fraction of the cost of powered digitally-steered columns.

HARMAN’S JBL Loudspeakers Highlight First Sound Reinforcement System at Trinity College Chapel in Cambridge
ORLANDO, Florida – RG Jones Sound Engineering has equipped the historic chapel at Cambridge’s Trinity College with its first sound reinforcement system, using 127 HARMAN’s JBL Control 52 ultra-compact satellite loudspeakers, accessed via a sophisticated BSS Soundweb DSP design to optimize the sound broadcast from seven fixed microphone positions at the lecterns. The equipment was supplied by Sound Technology Ltd, Harman Pro’s UK and ROI distributors. They responded successfully to a system design created by acoustic consultants, Peter Mapp + Associates, who drew up the tender document on behalf of property management consultants (and overall project managers) Bidwells.Trinity College was originally founded by Henry VIII in 1546 as part of the University of Cambridge. The chapel, with its notable clock tower, sits at the far end of the Great Court and was begun by Mary I in 1554 in memory of her father, Henry VIII. The ante-chapel contains statues of many famous Trinity men, including Roubillac’s sculpture of Isaac Newton, while the chapel itself contains a Metzler organ—one of only two instruments by this respected maker in Great Britain. It is contained within the restored late 17th-century case built by England's most famous organ builder, ‘Father’ Smith.
RG Jones’ Project Manager, Jeff Woodford, and Installation Manager Jon Berry were tasked with implementing a design in a listed building under English Heritage restrictions, which called for the loudspeakers to be set discreetly on the shelving under the pews and the transformer distribution boxes to be similarly concealed.
Because the system was designed to handle gentle reinforcement rather than public address, sequential delay times were measured by Berry from each of the microphone positions to each of the Chapel’s 14 speaker zones (based on seven microphone positions feeding each of the North and South sides). Advanced programming ensured that the voice of the speaker or celebrant is heard first at the local position.
A further four zones cover the organ loft (where the equipment rack is situated), the ante-chapel, control screen position and altar.
Jon Berry explained how he used HARMAN HiQnet™ London Architect’s Logic programming of the two Soundweb BLU-100 devices (configured 12-in/8-out), to enable them to sense when audio is being passed into the system. “At the point that it reaches a certain level it will trigger a preset, which sets the delay time appropriate to the particular speaker, ensuring that the listener can detect exactly where the sound source is.
“When two people are speaking from different positions, it will use custom designed Logic automatically to recall a different preset which will deliver a compromise between the two positions,” Berry said. “The system simply auto configures and triggers the delay time, via the Logic preset recalls.”
With the installation of 127 100V line Control 52’s—a radical number for a listed building—and the additional number of zones, a BSS BLU-BOB2 was incorporated into the design to expand the number of outputs.
The Control 52’s were specified by Peter Mapp since they are designed to deliver superb high fidelity sound via a low distortion 2.5-inch driver. Jeff Woodford stated that due to the excellent fixing plate/wall bracket assembly, and ball and socket arrangement that allowed allows each speaker to be angled up to 45 degrees off-axis, they had experienced no difficulty in concealing and pointing these miniature speakers.
“This was the first time the Chapel had used sound reinforcement, and given the restrictions and number of microphone positions, it proved to be a particularly challenging project,” Berry added. “But thanks to the discreet and versatile nature of the Control 52’s, and programming flexibility of London Architect, we have been able to deliver an optimum localized sound to every seat in the room via a simple interface.”

HARMAN’S Soundcraft and AKG Combine to Make Wireless Mic Monitoring in the Mixer a First
ORLANDO, Florida — Every engineer has been there. The radio mics check out fine on the RF Tech’s laptop, but that’s before the talent walks onto the stage. Reception black spots, drained batteries, accidental mutes--anything can happen once the show gets underway.Thankfully, HARMAN’s Soundcraft and AKG now make the FOH engineer’s life easier. Now it’s possible for the first time to monitor the status of any HARMAN HiQnet™-compatible AKG radio mic directly from the Soundcraft Vi Series console surface, courtesy of VM2 (Vistonics Microphone Monitoring). VM2 provides real-time visual displays of battery life, RF status, mic muting and internal clipping directly on a channel strip on the Vistonics™ screen, so it’s possible to see a problem long before you hear it, right there on the relevant channel--with expanded information instantly available just by touching the screen.
System configuration couldn’t be more straightforward, and uses Harman’s proprietary HiQnet network--simply plug in the mics, patch them to the related console channels, and you’re done. You can even identify the relevant mic receiver in the rack by pressing the Locate button, causing the receiver front panel display to flash.
It all adds up to much more efficient workflow and one less thing for the hard-pressed engineer to worry about.
VM2 will be available for all Soundcraft Vi Series consoles in V4.5 software, including Vi1, Vi2, Vi4 and Vi6.
Compatible AKG Wireless mic systems are WMS 4000, WMS 4500 and DMS 700 (optional HUB 4000Q HiQnet Ethernet interface required).

JBL Marquis Dance Club Series loudspeakers incorporate a host of the company’s most advanced and proven technologies to deliver extraordinary sound quality and reliable long-term operation. The heavy-duty subwoofers, woofers and midrange drivers employ JBL Differential Drive technology, which employs two voice coils and two magnetic gaps rather than the single drive coil of conventional drivers. This configuration provides higher peak output with less power compression, for consistent sound quality even at high volume levels. The subwoofers utilize JBL Vented Gap Cooling as well as Differential Drive technology, which pumps air through the woofer’s magnetic gap and directly over and around the voice coil to provide immediate heat transfer and reduce operating temperature, further reducing power compression and enabling greater dynamic capability.
The new 2453H-SL, 2432H and 2408H-1 compression drivers utilize lightweight neodymium magnet structures. The 2453H-SL utilizes a damped laminate diaphragm, facilitating smoother frequency response. All compression drivers operate in conjunction with JBL’s exclusive Progressive Transition™ waveguides for high efficiency along with extremely low distortion and optimized pattern control. JBL’s Selenium ST400 super tweeters offer articulate, long-throw high-frequency enhancement, making them ideal for use in clubs and larger venues.
JBL Marquis Dance Club Series loudspeakers are built to the highest standards to withstand continuous, demanding professional use, with ruggedized cabinet coverings and durable metal grilles. The MD52 and MD55 offer built-in handles, pole mounts and OmniMount ®-compatible mounting points, as well as multiple M10 attachment points and additional installation-friendly features.

HARMAN Professional Introduces HiQnet System Architect™ Version 3.0, Featuring Audio Video Bridging (AVB) Capabilities at InfoComm 2011
ORLANDO, Florida — At InfoComm 2011, HARMAN Professional today announced the introduction of its HiQnet System Architect™ Version 3.0 system configuration software, the first version of System Architect to provide Audio Video Bridging (AVB) capabilities. Version 3.0 offers AVB networked audio routing support, along with a host of additional functionality including support for the dbx® SC 32 and SC 64 Digital Matrix Processors and the BSS® Audio/NETGEAR® GS724T 24-Port Ethernet AVB Switch, the world’s first true networkable AVB devices.
“Audio Video Bridging is clearly the future of audio/video signal distribution, and our System Architect version 3.0 provides systems integrators and installers with an important new tool for designing and configuring AVB-based networked A/V systems,” noted Adam Holladay, Senior Market Manager, HARMAN Professional System Development and Integration Group (SDIG). “With System Architect version 3.0, the complexities of networked audio routing are greatly reduced.”
HARMAN HiQnet System Architect version 3.0 enables designers to efficiently and reliably configure a HARMAN AVB-based audio/video system using a vastly simplified graphical interface for audio routing. Signals are routed by dragging and dropping from a filterable list of all available source AVB signals onto the destination device icon in the main workspace – singly or multiple at a time. Releasing the mouse launches a pop-up routing dialog for the destination device and signals are assigned to available channel inputs. AVB enables time-synchronized, ultra-low-latency audio and video signals to be distributed over IEEE 802 Ethernet networks, offering the potential to greatly simplify A/V system wiring and installation while providing expanded signal-distribution and control capabilities.
System Architect 3.0 is compatible with all HARMAN AVB-ready products including the dbx SC 32 and SC 64 Digital Matrix Processors with the new AVB high-speed option card installed. The SC processors with the AVB high-speed option card are the world’s first truly-networkable AVB audio processors in that AVB signals may be routed over an AVB network. The System Architect 3.0 workspace also includes the BSS Audio/NETGEAR GS724T 24-Port Ethernet AVB Switch - the world’s first AVB switch for networking multichannel audio and video over standardized Ethernet. As with HiQnet devices, a representation of the switch may be loaded into the System Architect 3.0 Venue, and double-clicking will launch the NETGEAR management HTML pages in the default Windows browser so as to integrate control of the switches with the rest of the HiQnet system.
System Architect 3.0 is being demonstrated at HARMAN Professional Booth #743 at the Orange County Convention Center, Orlando, FL (June 15 – 17). Underscoring its support of Audio Video Bridging technology, HARMAN Professional is also exhibiting at the AVnu Alliance pavilion at Booth 383e in the Convention Center, and BSS Audio and dbx are co-sponsoring the AVnu Alliance contractor evening at the Rosen Center, Thursday June 16 from 5:00 - 6:30pm. HARMAN’s Crown Showcases ComTech DriveCore™ Series Amplifiers At InfoComm 2011
ORLANDO, Florida — Underscoring the transformative capabilities of HARMAN Crown’s chip-based technology, the company today placed a central emphasis on its ComTech DriveCore™ Series Amplifiers at InfoComm 2011. The technology enables performance grade amplifiers to provide a smaller footprint for enhanced power in a range of fixed installations including executive boardrooms, education facilities, and luxury suites in hotels and stadiums.
The line, which consists of four models, offering up to eight channels at 150 watts per channel, are all one rack, fan-less and ultra-energy efficient. DriveCore chip technology offers greater than 90 percent efficiency with no compromise in performance, boasting a signal-to-noise ratio of 110dB. DriveCore also has patented feedback and protection circuits integrated into the silicon for fast and accurate response.
“Never before has there been an amplifier that systems integration professionals could look to as being specifically designed for smaller fixed installation environments,” said Marc Kellom, director of marketing for Crown. “We not only forever changed the way amplifiers will be engineered with our DriveCore chip technology but we also answered the call of our customers to design an amplifier that would meet the specific needs of projects that are a major aspect of their business.”
The DriveCore chip, which was co-developed with Texas Instruments, combines the amplifier drive stage into the power output stage (along with additional audio-signal functions) – circuits that are typically much larger in size and power requirements. As a result, power consumption is dramatically reduced, and the amplifiers are much more energy-efficient. The DriveCore design yields sonic benefits as well, thanks to tighter tolerances, better circuit matching and inherently lower noise.
Because of their greater efficiency and Class D design, ComTech DriveCore series amplifiers also produce less heat, a by-product of inefficient amplifier operation. As a result, the amplifiers do not need to use a fan or traditional large, heavy heat sinks, further reducing energy demands.

New HARMAN HiQnet Performance Manager™ Sound Reinforcement System Configuration And Control Software Demonstrated at InfoComm 2011
ORLANDO, Florida – Following on its successful launch at Prolight + Sound 2011 where it generated widespread interest and excitement, HARMAN Professional is demonstrating its new HiQnet Performance Manager™ software at InfoComm 2011. HiQnet Performance Manager is a highly refined user interface that facilitates the design of touring and live performance venue sound reinforcement systems. Designed especially for touring and theatrical sound engineering, HiQnet Performance Manager is an application-specific iteration of the category-leading HARMAN HiQnet System Architect 2 connectivity and control software application for professional-grade audio system integration.“In touring, time is money, and Performance Manager dramatically streamlines the system design, setup and tuning process, allowing a JBL VERTEC ® System Engineer to achieve a higher level of performance with more consistent results on a daily basis from venue to venue,” explained Paul Bauman, Director of Tour Sound Product Application and Application Engineering, JBL Professional.
HiQnet Performance Manager provides a comprehensive, step-by-step workflow that directly corresponds to real-world system configuration, taking the workflow paradigm introduced in System Architect 2 to a higher level of functionality for any live performance audio application. It is fully integrated with JBL’s Line Array Calculator II loudspeaker configuration and acoustic modeling software. The user begins by loading templates of the speaker arrays used in the system, and then runs Line Array Calculator II for each array as part of the initial sound design task of determining how many and which type of loudspeakers are required to cover a given venue. For each array, Performance Manager automatically loads the passive VERTEC or powered VERTEC DrivePack® DPDA line array configuration into the main application workspace – the first of many automated design processes native to the software application. Loudspeakers can also be manually loaded into the templates if desired.
Once the user defines the required amplifier parameters for the passive loudspeakers within the arrays, Performance Manager automatically loads the correct number of Crown Audio VRACK or other user-determined amplifier racks into the audio system. The software then associates the amplifier outputs with the bandpass crossover inputs for the selected array and programs the amplifiers with the correct JBL preset data, as well as gain shading and JBL Line Array Control Panel equalization parameters that are determined in JBL’s Line Array Calculator II as part of the modeling process to optimize sound pressure level and frequency response over the defined audience geometry.
“HiQnet Performance Manager greatly simplifies loudspeaker preset management as well as power amplifier networking, grouping, monitoring and control. It is the ideal complement to the Crown VRACK turnkey power amplifier rack solution for JBL VERTEC line array systems, and the automated generation of pre-configured control panels combined with a tablet-friendly, highly-intuitive user interface will be a huge timesaver for the touring sound engineer,” added Brian Pickowitz, Market Manager, Crown Audio.
Representations of the bandpass inputs for each loudspeaker section are overlaid onto the arrays, enabling the user to easily visualize the array configuration, whether JBL DrivePack-powered or driven by external Crown power amplifiers. Performance Manager software also significantly simplifies system-networking configuration – the user can simply drag and drop devices discovered on the network onto the pre-configured devices within the Performance Manager workspace to synchronize all addressing and parameter values.
In addition, the Performance Manager graphical interface provides embedded control panels for array calibration, time alignment and system EQ which utilize input section digital signal processing resources available in either Crown I-Tech HD power amplifiers or JBL DrivePack-powered loudspeakers with DPDA digital audio input modules. Input attenuation, equalization, delay settings and bandpass controls are all readily accessible directly within the main application workspace along with flexible grouping and comprehensive solo/mute functionality for system testing.
Once system tuning is complete, Performance Manager’s Show Mode display is optimized for the actual live performance, offering appropriate adjustment control ballistics for equalization and dedicated monitoring interfaces for levels, speaker loads, thermal conditions and AC power requirements. The workspace for all stages of Performance Manager’s workflow has a common design motif, with monitoring functions overlaid on top of the same loudspeaker bandpass representations within the workspace, making visualization easier and more consistent across various workflow screens.

HARMAN “Powered By Crown” Apple® iPad Control Application Provides Groundbreaking Amplifier Monitoring and Control For Systems Integrators
ORLANDO, Florida — Deploying the power of its Ethernet backbone, HARMAN’s “Powered By Crown” iPad/iPhone App, is being showcased at InfoComm 2011. Providing systems integrators with a powerful tool for enhanced control and configuration, Crown’s Ethernet architecture allows for direct control of amplifiers unlike competitive systems requiring an additional computer interface. The application can be used to control and monitor amplifiers by setting basic control panels on an amplifier or by handling a complete setup through HARMAN HiQnet™ System Architect™.
The application benefits integrators deploying Crown Ethernet-enabled amplifiers including I-Tech, I-Tech HD, CTs, and Macro-Tech I Series. The app can be deployed on two, four and eight channel amplifiers. Integrators can create a custom control panel in HiQnet System Architect, save it and directly import it onto the app for system tuning and the creation of a control and monitoring system for end users.
Systems integrators can deploy the iPad App when they are installing and tuning systems and now have the capability to setup, troubleshoot, and monitor systems remotely. Inputs, routing, load monitoring, metering, thermal conditions and levels are now all controllable through the application.
“Our ‘Powered By Crown’ App is not simply a remote desktop for a computer. We are providing systems integrators with real-time data directly from the amplifiers on a network. Our commitment to standards-based Ethernet gives us the capability to offer remote monitoring and control that no other manufacturer can duplicate,” stated Marc Kellom, director of marketing for Crown.
A strategic long-term commitment to Ethernet technology by Crown means that users have the benefit of this simple to use, cost efficient program as well as seamless integration of their legacy and future Crown products through the app.
The “Powered By Crown” application is compatible with the iPod Touch and is now available for $3.99 on Apple’s iTunes store.

HARMAN’s Studer Consoles and JBL Professional Loudspeakers Have Starring Role at 65th Annual Tony Awards
NEW YORK, New York – On Broadway’s biggest night, New York City’s Beacon Theatre lit up with celebrities and eager fans while hosting the top theatrical performers and acts of the year at the 65th Annual Tony Awards. Firehouse Productions of Red Hook, New York provided the live sound reinforcement and audio broadcast systems for the event, deploying HARMAN’s Studer Vista Series audio mixing consoles at the front of house position and in the monitor truck, and JBL Professional VERTEC® line arrays for the Theatre’s live PA system. The 65th Annual Tony Awards featured an A-list crowd of performers and presenters, such as Daniel Radcliffe, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Whoopi Goldberg, Chris Rock, Samuel L. Jackson, Kelsey Grammer, Stephen Colbert, Jon Cryer and host Neil Patrick Harris, among others.
Although the Beacon Theatre houses JBL VERTEC line arrays as part of its own sound reinforcement system, the Tony Awards required Firehouse Productions to replace parts of the “permanent” system with main arrays situated higher in the air to stay out of live camera shots. Firehouse outfitted the Beacon Theatre with a temporary PA system that featured 13 JBL VERTEC VT4888 midsize line array elements per side with a center cluster of four VT4887 compact line array elements. 22 of JBL’s new VERTEC VT4886 subcompact line array elements provided front fill, down fill and under-balcony coverage. Forty-two Crown I-Tech HD 12000 amplifiers powered the system. Firehouse supplied a Studer Vista 5SR console at the front-of-house position, manned by Ron Reaves, which also included a pair of JBL LSR4328P studio monitors.
“We needed to design a system that wouldn’t be seen by any of the television cameras and would remain separate from the stage set,” said Mark Dittmar of Firehouse Productions. “We were also faced with the challenge of hanging everything from a single point that supported a maximum of one ton. The VERTEC line arrays were ideal because they are lightweight and easy to hang, but also provide a tremendous amount of acoustical output power.”
With little space available backstage for monitoring, Firehouse Productions deployed “Engine 1”, a specially-equipped, double-expanding 48-foot semi-trailer production audio unit parked outside the venue. Here, Mike Bove was also responsible for onstage artist and presenter monitor mixes. Firehouse provided a Studer Vista 5 digital console, along with a pair of JBL LSR6328P studio monitors and a Lexicon PCM96 effects processor.
Digital audio distribution for the entire system was handled via Riedel RockNet, which acts as a universal input/output router, connecting multiple consoles for large events and specialized field applications.
“With the Tony Awards, expectations are at their peak so it’s important to ensure the full magnitude of the presentations, videos and performances both engage and immerse the live crowd as well as those watching at home,” Dittmar said. “The reliability and user-friendly aspects of the Vista 5’s allowed us to perfect the broadcast, even around the block in the mobile broadcast station. This year’s event was a groundbreaking show for us and we were able to provide some excellent new equipment. The Vista 5’s are great consoles and we were very happy with the end results.”

Boston Ballet Acquires Soundcraft Vi1™ Digital Mixing Console
BOSTON, Massachusetts — Founded in 1963, the Boston Ballet has become one of the leading dance companies in the world. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Mikko Nissinen and Executive Director Barry Hughson, the Company maintains an internationally acclaimed repertoire and the Boston Ballet School, the largest ballet school in North America. The Boston Ballet recently upgraded its audio system, including the installation of a Soundcraft Vi1 digital mixing console.Talamas Broadcast Equipment of Newton, Massachusetts provided the Soundcraft Vi1 console in time for the recent holiday production of ‘The Nutcracker.’ “We required a console that could handle a number of diverse elements including mixing the chorus and orchestra, and splitting the live feed for archiving,” said Nick Jabour of Talmas Broadcast Equipment. “We looked at various consoles and found that the Vi1 was ideally suited to the requirements of Boston Ballet.”
“The Vi1 has specific sets of features that are ideal for different mixing and archiving tasks,” continued Jabour. The way the EQ is set up and the ability to isolate pretty much anything is really useful. The board is highly customizable, and it can be customized very quickly.”
Jabour noted that the Vi1 made the transition from analog to digital mixing easier. “Prior to the Vi1, Boston Ballet’s front of house engineer Benjamin Young and I hadn’t worked with any of the digital Soundcraft consoles, but we had both mixed on Soundcraft analog consoles, and we loved the sound of those. Because of this, when the time came to go digital, we decided to look at the Vi1, and liked what we heard and how the console operated.”
In fact, once Talamas Broadcast Equipment delivered the Vi1, Young had his show up and running the same day. “When we saw Benjamin later in the week, it was like he’d been using it forever,” Jabour said.
“The layout of the Vi1 is so intuitive that you can put any sound operator in front of it and they’ll be acquainted with the board in no time,” Young said. “A lot of consoles try to retrain you how to think in order to learn their system. But the Vi1 is designed in a common-sense fashion that makes it really easy to operate.”
“One of the major advantages of the console is the fact that the processor and control surface exist ‘live’ in the Vi1 and the ‘brain’ isn’t 150 feet away in a pit somewhere,” Jabour pointed out. “This eliminated what could have otherwise been a huge concern – if the signal path was cut, there’d be no way of continuing without basically stopping the show. That is not an issue with the Vi1.”
The majority of the Boston Ballet’s productions take place at the famed Boston Opera House. However, several productions throughout the year are held in different venues, which made the Vi1’s compact size and portability all the more attractive. “I’m looking forward to taking the board with me on some of our upcoming shows at remote locations—being able to drop the shows right in and have it quickly up and running is a huge advantage,” Young said.
