As a sought-after songwriter, musician and producer, CJ Vanston has worked with dozens of legendary artists including Tina Turner, Joe Cocker, ‘NSync, Julio Iglesias, Ringo Starr, B.B. King, Barbra Streisand, Spinal Tap, Chris Botti, Celine Dion and many more. His credits include more than 100 albums and movie soundtracks, as well as the music for all of Christopher Guest’s films (including Waiting For Guffman and A Mighty Wind). CJ Vanston does a lot of his work in his studio, The Treehouse, in Hollywood, which is outfitted with an eye-popping array of state-of-the-art and vintage gear—including Vanston’s preferred JBL LSR6300 Series studio monitors.
Currently, Vanston is working with guitarist Jeff “Skunk” Baxter of Steely Dan and Doobie Brothers fame on the debut album from the Baxter Vanston Band. The record is slated for 2011 release and will feature Michael McDonald and a host of surprise guest stars. Vanston has also partnered with Phil Collen of Def Leppard on a new album and an online label, moodahmusic.com.
With a continuous influx of projects, Vanston relies on the LSR studio monitors to provide accurate and reliable performance. “I don’t want any surprises from my studio monitors,” noted Vanston. “I want what I’m hearing to be the same as what’s being heard in the outside world—and I don’t want to do that in a lo-fi way. After I’m done recording an album, I don’t want to get a call from the mastering engineer because something doesn’t sound right. I need a true, accurate representation of what’s going on in the mix.”
Since making the LSR studio monitors a fixture in The Treehouse, Vanston comments, “The LSR monitors have been amazing. For the last few records I’ve done, the mastering engineers have barely touched the mixes—that says a lot right there. The LSR monitors have a big, beefy sound, even without a subwoofer. They’re so rich-sounding that I don’t get any ear fatigue as I would with some other studio monitors.”
