After a dozen years of producing and engineering in Nashville, Dave Goodwin decided to pursue a dream and create a facility that felt more like a retreat than the impersonal atmosphere of many studios. Big Sky High studios in Montana is the realization of his vision – a former bed and breakfast located just outside Bozeman that is designed to inspire and replenish the creative spirit. Recently, Goodwin selected JBL LSR6300 studio monitors at Big Sky High for his control room.
Over the past several years, Big Sky High has hosted an eclectic variety of talented artists, including the Gin Blossoms, Raul Malo, Stacey Earle, John Jorgenson, Blackhawk and Darrell Scott. Big Sky High also serves as the home base for Big Sky Rockin’ Rendezvous, a workshop series that allows guests to collaborate with established artists to learn about songwriting and record material in Big Sky High’s state-of-the-art recording studio while enjoying a variety of recreational activities in the beautiful surroundings of Montana.
“My concept in creating Big Sky High was to build a place where the environment around you is completely conducive to creativity,” explained Goodwin. “We’re located in an expanse of open spaces, blue sky and the Rocky Mountains, and the setting is absolutely inspiring. We’re like a resort that happens to have a recording studio inside of it – we have full accommodations and access to riding and hiking trails. We’ve also hosted about 50 house concerts, including the one that became the Poco live record Bareback at Big Sky.”
Goodwin decided to add JBL’s top-of-the-line LSR6300 loudspeakers to his studio after GRAMMY® Award-winning producer/engineer Chuck Ainlay came to Big Sky High for a project and suggested Goodwin give them a listen.
“Once I heard them, I knew I had to have them,” Goodwin said. “Although many producers, artists and engineers have their own personal preferences for studio monitors, I think the JBL LSR6300 finds a sonic common ground that everyone can relate to. They sound clear, detailed, smooth and faithful to the recording – and I find that they can also be made to sound great in any room thanks to their RMC feature and active amplification.”
JBL LSR6328P studio monitors combine advanced driver technologies with a design that ensures exceptional accuracy at the mix position in a broad range of rooms. The LSR6328P is equipped with JBL’s RMC™ Room Mode Correction system that compensates for inaccuracies in the low-frequency response that can be caused by room modes typical in untreated rooms. The supplied RMC calibration kit identifies problematic room modes and determines the degree of correction needed.
Additional projects on tap in 2011 for Goodwin and his independent label A-Major/D2 Records include A Time For Everything by Marshall McLean, Johngosolo by John Bohlinger, and a record in progress by Cowboy Troy, formerly of Big & Rich.
