SSE Audio Group Channels Pope’s Public Mass In Scotland Through Soundcraft Vi6 Digital Consoles

With a crowd of 75,000 followers, Pope Benedict XVI’s voice during mass at the Bellahouston Park in Glasgow, Scotland was entrusted with SSE Audio Group’s deployment of two Soundcraft Vi6 digital consoles. With a 35-piece orchestra, 800-piece choir and pre and post-show concerts, the religious event required reliable and vast amounts of digital channels to ensure no note or prayer was unheard.

With years of personal use and high-quality results with Soundcraft consoles, SSE Project Manager, Dan Bennett is well-acquainted with the Vi6 digital consoles. “Soundcraft is personally becoming a favorite of mine for specs,” he said. “The amount of channels available with the Vi6s were perfect for this type of event and the surface features ensured the utmost quality for the performance.”

Under tremendous pressure dealing with inclement weather, narrow deadlines and organizing a concert-style sound system for the Pope, SSE utilized one Vi6 for the monitors and another Vi6 plus a Vi1 console for the FOH management. It was vital to the organizers that the seating area sounded perfect for the Pope’s service.

“We were able to keep the large stage and all of the entertainment under control with the Vi6s as if it were a large concert, while still offering a peaceful worship service environment for the Papal mass itself,” continued Bennett. “Everything was absolutely perfect and we couldn’t have asked for a better job all around from the team or the Vi6s.”

The Soundcraft Vi6 digital console uses a derivation of the Studer Vistonics touch screen user interface to allow engineers to operate the desk intuitively.  With 96 mono inputs and 35 outputs, the console is one of the most comprehensive and detailed, yet simple-to-use boards in the industry.

SSE purchased the Vi6 consoles through Sound Technology, Soundcraft’s UK distributor (http://www.soundtech.co.uk).

Norwest Productions And Sound.com Kick Off 2010 Commonwealth Games In India with JBL VerTec Line Arrays

Bringing together more than 50 nations from around the world, the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India opened its 12-day athletic competition with a large, multi-array JBL VerTec line array system powered by Crown I-Tech HD amplifiers to support the opening ceremonies. The system successfully filled the Nehru Stadium in New Delhi, occupied by more than 60,000 spectators and nearly 5,000 athletes.  Audio production companies Norwest Productions (Australia) and Sound.com (India) collaborated to implement Auditoria’s sophisticated event system design in the field.

Scott Willsallen of Auditoria, having already completed major games ceremonies such as the Athens 2004 Olympics, Doha 2006 Asian Games and the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, was contracted by the organizing committee for the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games to design and manage the audio system for both the opening and closing ceremonies.

Twenty-five distributed JBL VerTec arrays lined the stadium to ensure everyone from the floor seats to the upper levels fully enjoyed the entertainment, which included performances from traditional Nagada drummers, who drummed to the beat of the countdown to the official start of the event. Eight of the arrays featured three JBL VT4889 fullsize line array elements and 17 contained three VT4888 midsize line array elements, with each also including a fullsize VerTec arrayable subwoofer. One hundred and two Crown amplifiers, including 92 I-Tech HD amplifiers, powered the JBL VerTec rig.  Harman’s HiQnet™ System Architect system software was used for configuration, remote control and monitoring of the system.

Norwest (Sydney, Australia) teamed with a regional, Mumbai-based sound production company, Sound.com, to supply the entire audio package and crew for the Delhi games’ opening and closing ceremonies.

“The VerTec V4 DSP tunings are excellent. The only additional tuning we had to do was some minor notch filtering to tidy up the response in the venue,” stated Willsallen. “It was all very subtle filtering. If it came down to it, we could have run the show very successfully without any additional E.Q. filtering.”

On the field of play, 25 JBL SRX712M speakers were used for the performers’ monitor system, while 32 JBL CBT70J column speakers and JBL SRX718S subwoofers were used to ensure that athletes on the field could experience the event’s sound. On the main stage, JBL VRX915M monitor wedges were utilized for musical performances.

“Norwest Productions and Sound.com combined their resources and skills to deliver an excellent audio system, which met the performance requirements of my design and worked within the project budget,” summarized Willsallen.

Luxury Kempinski Hotel Builds First-Class Audio System Around BSS Audio Soundweb London Digital Network

The largest installation of a BSS Audio digital network in the Slovak Republic has been deployed with the opening of the new Kempinski Hotel River Park in Bratislava. Located on the Danube River, the Kempinski will provide a new standard of lifestyle luxury in this historic city, steeped in imperial heritage.
With its selection of restaurants and bars, a spa and wellness center, in addition to a meeting room and four conference rooms (each divisible into two separate rooms), an advanced digital backbone connecting all the featured areas was required.

Peak Audio s.r.o. handled the installation utilizing two Soundweb™ London BLU-160 configurable processors, with two BLU-120 I/O expanders and a BLU-BOB2 break-out box, offering a further eight channels of analog audio output expansion.

The BSS Audio Soundweb London devices all interconnected through their digital audio bus. Based on Gigabit Ethernet technology this bus carries 256 channels of fault-tolerant, low-latency audio at 48kHz/24bit, or 128 channels at 96kHz/24bit across a standard CAT5e connection — providing a highly cost-effective solution.

The Soundweb London matrix at the Kempinski is configured with 44 inputs and 20 outputs, providing signal routing to 13 zones (including the nine conference rooms, foyer and other areas).

Inputs are provided from a variety of sources including CDs, DVDs, wireless and wired microphones — and also notebooks in the conference rooms. For local mixing with additional microphone inputs, a Soundcraft FX16ii has been provided.

Boston’s Paradise Rock Club Continues Storied Tradition With JBL VRX Constant Curvature Arrays

Continuing a 35-year tradition of entertaining patrons with performances ranging from today’s stars to tomorrow’s rock legends, the Paradise Rock Club in Boston, Massachusetts, recently renovated its performance hall to not only increase capacity, but also keep its reputation for superior concerts intact. With JBL VRX Constant Curvature line arrays now installed, the Paradise Rock Club is evolving technologically while maintaining its classic image.

The Paradise Rock Club has played host to many of the world’s leading acts throughout the decades, including U2, who played their first US gig in the Boston club. With an 850-person capacity and a stage centered along a 50-foot wall, the club provides a dynamic, yet intimate venue for live music enthusiasts.

With left and right main arrays each containing four JBL VRX932LA-1 loudspeakers, Production Manager Billy ‘Bud’ McCarthy has upgraded the sound of the club, replacing an older, pre-existing system. Six JBL SRX712M stage monitors also line the club’s stage.  The new JBL system now enables the venue to truly present the quality of live sound performance that has been expected of the venue for decades.

The Paradise Club also boasts six Crown XTi6000 amplifiers - four for the line array, two for the monitors - and two additional XTi4000’s for FOH.  The club utilizes a BSS BLU-100 12x8 for signal processing.  “The Crown amps are great for the club and we continue to bring them in as we replace our older equipment.”

“We knew we had to do something about our outdated system after hearing the new JBL system at the Boston House of Blues,” stated McCarthy. “We were all smiles as we began tuning our new JBL system. It improved the sound quality significantly, even before we turned on the subwoofers.”

“The new VRX arrays disperse the sound perfectly and the music critics attending our shows have immediately commented on the improved sound filling the room, along with the better sightlines,” McCarthy continued.  “We are already in the process of planning an expanded PA with more VRX speakers on each side.”

JBL’s VRX and SRX product lines are ideally suited for use in live-performance venues. “VRX arrays are especially useful for small to medium sized live music clubs like the Paradise Rock Club,” observed Richard Ruse, Director of Marketing, Portable PA, JBL Professional. “They have been specifically designed to offer an ideal combination of top audio performance and good value to the user.”

Trinity Sound Company Upgrades Yucaipa Church’s Audio System With JBL VRX Constant Curvature Arrays

Delivering high output and pinpoint directivity with a compact and affordable system, Trinity Sound Company (TSC) recently upgraded the 30-year-old sound system at the Yucaipa Church in Yucaipa, California with JBL VRX compact Constant Curvature line arrays. The new loudspeaker system is located in the Church’s 500-seat, multipurpose event room.

With two main arrays each including four small-scale JBL VRX928LA dual 8-inch line array speakers and a VRX915S 1x15-inch subwoofer, TSC achieved maximum coverage in the room, which is utilized for worship, concerts, movies and general events.  The square-shaped room was designed with its stage in the front right corner and the front-of-house sound booth in the rear left corner, resulting in a wide fill area in between.

Each VRX928LA enclosure includes a patented high frequency waveguide with two compression drivers mounted on a continuous arc, enabling them to work together acoustically as if they were a single driver, ensuring consistent, even coverage. “The room was just big enough where plug-and-play, left/right speakers wouldn’t have provided the best sound, but small enough that a large line array was unnecessary,” stated Devin DeVore, Owner and Head Engineer, TSC.  “With our budget and sound requirements, the very compact and low-profile JBL VRX928LA arrays provide the best value and performance, pleasing the client and delivering great sound.”

Representatives of the Yucaipa church have kept in close contact with TSC as positive comments and praise continue to come in about the updated system.

DeVore and TSC have used JBL loudspeakers for years and stick by JBL’s promise of delivering high quality.  “It’s nice to put a speaker system in and know that the product will sound exactly how it has been advertised,” continued DeVore.  “There is no exaggeration with JBL equipment. What it says, it does--right on the money.”

Soundcraft Consoles Mix Monitors For Maé Arena Tour

Experienced Paris-based monitor engineer Laurent Midas has been mixing Christophe Maé’s Autumn national arena tour for the first time on a Soundcraft platform, using both a Vi6 and a Vi2.

The sound man has been providing a reference mix for the best-selling French singer’s backing band, including drums and bass, two guitarists, a keyboard player and two backing vocals. A fully equipped 96-channel Vi6, provided by French rental company Potar Hurlant, is assigned to the IEM’s, with sends to the floor monitors (plus additional mixes for guest performers) from a Vi2 (supplied by Soundcraft’s French distributors, SCV Audio).

Growing up in the studio environment and then developing his own home studio, Laurent Midas switched to live sound 15 years ago. He quickly made a niche for himself as a touring monitor engineer, winning a number of prestigious accounts—mostly in Monitor City. “You could say I am specialised in IEM — around 95% of the time I am mixing in-ears … with or without wedges,” he says.

Until recently he had been working in a different digital environment—but six months ago he was introduced to Pascal Briam at SCV Audio, and his life changed. Laurent was soon beta testing the latest Soundcraft Vi digital software for the Soundcraft Vi4 and an enlightening visit to Soundcraft HQ in the UK followed.

Not that the sound engineer wasn’t already familiar with the operating topology. “Working in studios I became familiar with the Vistonics™ interface from using the Studer Vista desks. I encountered the Soundcraft Vi6 four years ago, when the product was first released and was pleased to see that it used the same engine.”

“When the software was adapted for the Vi4 it became like a brand new desk for me. I love the quality of the sound — just as I loved that Studer Vista sound.”

When Christophe Maé started to experience problems with his previous monitor sound two years ago Laurent was drafted in “to clean up the mix” — and he has remained with France’s biggest album seller ever since. “This is probably the biggest tour I have worked on — other than Mylene Farmer in 2009,” he declares.

The features of the Vi6 have certainly found favour with Laurent. “Definitely the sound is my first goal — and I’m very happy with this desk. I also love the intuitive Vistonics touch screens and the MADI connection too — giving the ability to work in playback mode for virtual soundchecks.

Other features of the Vi highlighted by Laurent Midas are the 'isolate' channels and parameters — which he says are the most powerful and flexible that he has seen — the Aux VCA, the user-definable layers and the Fader-Glow colour-coded desk design.

Having entered the world of Soundcraft quite late on it seems there is now no turning back. “I now look forward to being able to save sessions which can be used right across the Soundcraft Vi portfolio — on Vi1, Vi2 Vi4 and Vi6 without trouble,” he says.

Crown Audio ComTech DriveCore™ Series Amplifiers Incorporate Exclusive Harman GreenEdge™ Environmentally-Friendly Technologies

The recently introduced Crown Audio ComTech Drive Core series amplifiers are among a new generation of products at the forefront of Harman International’s GreenEdge environmental initiative. Crown DriveCore series amplifiers are designed to be extremely energy-efficient, and use fewer resources in manufacturing.

At the heart of the amplifiers is Harman’s new DriveCore amplifier IC chip. This chip, co-developed by with Texas Instruments™ Incorporated exclusively for Harman, incorporates an unprecedented level of component integration into an IC that is smaller than the size of a postage stamp. Harman supplied the amplifier expertise, while TI was uniquely qualified to provide the necessary high-voltage process technology.

The DriveCore chip combines the amplifier drive stage into the power output stage (along with additional audio-signal functions) – circuits that are typically much larger in size and power requirements. As a result, power consumption is dramatically reduced, and the amplifiers are much more energy-efficient. The DriveCore design yields sonic benefits as well, thanks to tighter tolerances, better circuit matching and inherently lower noise. The use of fewer internal components also means reduced strain on environmental resources from raw materials usage and manufacturing processes.

Because of their greater efficiency and Class D design, ComTech DriveCore series amplifiers also produce less heat, a by-product of inefficient amplifier operation. As a result, the amplifiers do not need to use a fan or traditional large, heavy heat sinks, further reducing energy demands.

The four models in the Crown ComTech DriveCore series deliver high-power output with greater than 90 percent efficiency, yet are compact and weigh less than 10 lbs. This reduced weight means lower shipping and fuel costs when transporting the amplifiers. The amplifiers’ Green Mode technology automatically adjusts their operating level according to the input signal, and places the amplifiers into either Sleep or Deep Sleep Mode after an extended absence of input signal.

“Our ComTech DriveCore amplifiers exemplify Harman International’s commitment to our GreenEdge initiative,” said Marc Kellom, director, marketing for Crown. “We intend to be at the forefront of creating products that use less electricity, consume fewer natural resources and reduce manufacturing by-products – while delivering the highest levels of performance, reliability and value.”

University of Notre Dame’s DeBartolo Performing Arts Center Upgrades Concert Hall with Soundcraft Vi4™ Digital Console

Entering its sixth performance season, the $64 million DeBartolo Performing Arts Center at the University of Notre Dame campus has recently upgraded its former audio system in the Leighton Concert Hall and now hosts a Soundcraft Vi4 digital console with BSS Soundweb London digital signal processing.

After many demos with the Vi4 and several other consoles, the Center’s technical crew unanimously agreed on bringing the Vi4 to Notre Dame.

“The Vi4 was the perfect investment for the center’s transition to digital sound,” said Audio Engineer Joshua Ingle.  “Everything from its ease of use and amazing sound quality to its sleek looks and size were considered, and the Vi4 fits the bill better than all the other choices.”

The acoustics in the Leighton Concert Hall are world-class, with the ability to mechanically change wall surfaces and reverb times, so the team needed a console that could match the impressive qualities of the space.  “With its quiet fader moves and its unmatched EQ, the Vi4 was an easy choice,” Ingle continued.

The Soundcraft Vi4 console has all the functionality and facilities of its predecessor, the Vi6, but in a smaller, more compact footprint more suited for space-conscious applications such as theaters, houses of worship and venues or clubs with space-limited mix positions. The Vi4 offers access to 72 inputs on 24 faders, with a total of 35 output busses available for use as masters, groups, auxes or matrices. All other features of the Soundcraft Vi6, such as the highly acclaimed Vistonics™ II touch-screen user interface, Soundcraft FaderGlow™ fader function display and the unequalled audio quality are inherited by the Soundcraft Vi4.

“We are so happy with the performance of the Vi4 digital console that we have already started looking into purchasing additional Vi Series consoles for the other performance venues in the center,” concluded Ingle.

Meeting Services, Inc. Relies On JBL Loudspeakers To Transform Exhibit Hall Into Cinema At Comic-Con

Ensuring that thousands of dedicated action, fantasy and superhero fans were blown away with advance previews of the summer’s hottest movies and games, regional audio systems provider Meeting Services, Inc. supplied sound to the Comic-Con International 2010 convention in San Diego for the 19th straight year. Using a complete JBL solution, Meeting Services transformed the 6,500-person San Diego Convention Center’s exhibit hall into one of the largest movie premiere venues in the world.

The company deployed an arsenal of JBL loudspeakers, including 24 JBL VERTEC® VT4889 fullsize line array elements, 24 VT4888 midsize line array elements, and eight VT4880 fullsize arrayable subwoofers. Fill speakers, delay arrays and secondary room systems included CBT Series column speakers, VRX932LA compact constant curvature array loudspeakers and JBL EON powered portable loudspeakers. Crown XTi, MAi and I-Tech amplifiers powered the sound rig. The system was configured with Harman HiQnet™ System Architect™ software for remote control and monitoring.

Unique from past years was Meeting Services’ deployment of CBT column speakers to create a surround sound system in the makeshift theater. “The room is shaped like a triangle, which isn’t ideal, but with the CBT speakers, we were able to angle them in a way that gave us more freedom with the main VERTEC line arrays,” Freeman said. “We used the directivity of the CBT speakers to our advantage. They’re also extremely light so I didn’t have to put in any extra rigging points. In the end, I saved more money on the CBT speakers than what I actually spent on the speakers themselves.”

The JBL CBT Series passive line array columns feature JBL’s Constant Beamwidth Technology™ circuitry, a breakthrough in pattern control that provides remarkably consistent constant directivity coverage and superb audio clarity, even in difficult acoustical environments. The coverage pattern of the CBT models can be adjusted—with a simple switch—between Broad Mode (designed for mid-throw situations) and Narrow Mode (for long-throw applications). This versatility allows the CBT’s to meet the requirements of a broad range of applications.

Founded in 1970, Comic-Con is the annual international preview event for all that is science fiction, fantasy and popular culture. Entertainment industry executives, producers, directors, writers, stars and their thousands of fans flock to California every summer to get a first glimpse of comics, movies, television shows and toys due out that year.

“The entire Comic-Con convention has a very loyal following, so the most important issue was to make sure the sound coming from the movies and stage was powerful, epic and most of all, entertaining,” said Ken Freeman, Technical Director of San Diego, California-based Meeting Services. “Our JBL system has been so successful in Comic-Con’s history, that producers and directors are actually cutting customized trailer mixes to sync with our solutions, offering the perfect sound to the audience.”

With most average movie theaters housing 400 seats, a patron is usually no further than 60 feet from the closest speaker, left or right. At Comic-Con, fans could be up to 200 feet from the nearest speaker, which was a major concern of Meeting Services. Freeman and his team utilized the power of the VERTEC arrays to ‘trick’ the ear into thinking it was much closer, offering ideal sound in any position throughout the venue.

“Comic-Con previews have a huge impact on the success or failure of the movie, so the expectation level for our systems is at ‘can’t fail,’” Freeman said. “The intense, all-encompassing sound is what makes the difference between a family staying home to watch a movie online or actually going out of the house to see the newest release. This event is a chance to show off the depth of sound that cinema theaters offer.”

“Meeting Services is now in its 10th year of owning the VT4889’s and there still is not a product on the scene that offers the same top-tier quality,” continued Freeman. “With the help of JBL products and support staff, we continue to make this world-renowned event a completely unforgettable experience for all participants.”

Chai Wallahs Push Soundcraft Vi4 To The Max At Green Man Festival

Soundcraft Vi6 and Vi1 consoles were also used at Green Man’s Far Out Tent.

LONDON, United Kingdom – One of the fast emerging collectives on the UK festival scene are the Chai Wallahs, whose increasingly familiar marquees are dedicated to providing an eclectic blend of music appealing to different lifestyles.

Founded three years ago by Si Chai, today, Chai Wallahs attend a number of summer calendar events — including Green Man in the Brecon Beacons — and are quickly becoming seek-out destinations.

Inside the organic-looking structure a selection of the UK’s finest underground talent and established Afro-beat, Funk and Reggae artists perform alongside DJs in a free-form mix, with the emphasis on acoustic music earlier in the day. It also provides its own chill area in the form of a unique café bar.

Green Man has become one of Chai Wallahs’ more recent destinations, and after their debut last year, this summer they were again out in force, with London-based sound engineer Harry Bishop piloting a Soundcraft Vi4™ in the 800-capacity tent.

“The Soundcraft Vi is my weapon of choice,” said Bishop, who last year took Soundcraft’s original Vi6 digital desk around the festival circuit.

This time around the Soundcraft Vi4 had been sub-hired in from Mark Hornsby’s PA company Hark, with whom the sound engineer has a close relationship. Hark also provided a Vi6 and Vi1 at Green Man’s second stage (the Far Out Tent).

Harry Bishop has been an aficionado of Soundcraft mixing desks since the early days of analogue, and remembers mixing on a Series I board at Plan B in Brixton many years ago. “I am very familiar with the analogue desks but the Vi is a step above, and my favourite digital desk,” he says.

The reason for this is the easy transition it offers the engineer from analogue to the digital world. “The most obvious factor is its analogue feel because the channel strip is linear, it’s not multi-layered, and everything is one touch away.

“One factor that grabs you immediately is the intuitive interface and the user programmable fader pages, while the sound of the desk is also excellent — the parametric EQ’s are very accurate and analogue sounding. This is always my ‘go-to’ desk — there’s no need to look anywhere else.”

Chai Wallahs choose their own roster of artists who rarely bring their own production and so Harry ends up mixing most of the performances — a situation with which he is entirely comfortable.

With at least ten bands a day operating for four days without sound checks, providing live audio is no easy task. But from a generic festival patch the speed of access the Vi4 affords, provides the opportunity to change desk templates with ease.

For many of the repeat performances Bishop can simply dial up the stored show mix. “Inside the desk structure I use the snapshots to recall the different band mixes and when a new band comes through I recall a ‘line check’ snapshot which provides me with a clean slate to work from,” he says.

The desk provides him with a highly flexible mixing environment he says — notably because of its zoning and monitor capabilities.

In fact with 27 output busses, each containing parametric and graphic EQ, he has a near endless ability to zone different areas, set delay times, assign record groups and monitor sends.

“Because we have a number of zones [to address] I set quite a detailed programme which I design on the offline editor. I have a sub array, which I can control on the matrix, I have delays and a café seated area on a different matrix. It’s quite an in-depth design.”

His tasks also involve creating five monitor mixes via talk-to-stage whilst using the shout box to communicate with the stage manager.

This summer Harry Bishop has trucked his trusty Soundcraft desk around other UK festivals such as Glastonbury, Secret Garden Party, Bestival, Shambala, Beach Break Live, Manifest on the Isle of Man, Sunrise and Electric Picnic. And thanks to his Soundcraft Vi4 he can reflect on a job well done.

Bishop followed this by undertaking PA tech duties on a short Groove Armada club tour, where another Soundcraft Vi4 was deployed for stage monitors and a Vi1, Soundcraft’s new compact derivative, was at FOH.
