HARMAN's JBL HiQnet Performance Manager(tm) Makes Live Sound Setup More Efficient Than Ever for CTS Audio

NORTHRIDGE, California - CTS Audio, based in Franklin, Tennessee, specializes in live and installed sound, mobile staging and sales, with a strong focus on tour sound for Christian performers and in designing systems for houses of worship. CTS has provided live sound for Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, the Women of Faith tour, the National Catholic Youth Convention, Hootie and the Blowfish, Tony Bennett and many others.

HARMAN's JBL VerTec(r) line arrays and Crown Audio I-Tech HD and XTi Series amps are the backbone of the company's live sound rigs - and the adoption of JBL HiQnet Performance Manager(tm) audio system design software has made CTS Audio's job a lot easier on the last few tours.

"Our company philosophy is to build on the experience of our history, but not be limited by it and to create our future through innovation," said Mike Taylor, vice president of CTS Audio. "Like most sound contractors, we are always looking for better ways to do things. When we heard about JBL HiQnet Performance Manager we decided to become an official beta tester. It has dramatically reduced setup time and improved system performance."

"Before Performance Manager, our crews had to use three separate applications to access the processors, amplifiers and PA system to do the system tuning," continued Taylor. "I would have to use BSS(r) HiQnet London Architect(tm) to time-align and EQ the PA and do any array correction. In order to bandpass-check the loudspeakers, I would either have to use HiQnet System Architect(tm) or the Powered by Crown iPhone/iPad app. With JBL HiQnet Performance Manager, I can accomplish all these tasks and then some."

Taylor became aware of Performance Manager after purchasing a new inventory of Crown I-Tech 12000HD amps and talking to Eric Friedlander of Crown about how to get the most out of them and the newer V5 preset tunings for VerTec loudspeakers. "Eric suggested I become a beta tester," Taylor said. "The Performance Manager software is a match made in heaven with the Crown I-Tech HD amplifiers. The amps offer extensive processing and interfacing functionality, and Performance Manager makes it simple to match them precisely to the VerTec's crossover points and dig deep into the amplifiers' capabilities, to get maximum power, signal to noise ratio and overall sound quality."

CTS Audio has deployed JBL HiQnet Performance Manager on the recent Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith 2 Friends, Women of Faith and National Catholic Youth Convention tours. "We implemented it fully as intended as a complete system deployment and optimization tool. Everything from the integrated JBL Line Array Calculator II to the array calculation to the system tuning and monitoring functions was used," stated Taylor.

"The ability to integrate the Line Array Calculator II software with the array correction functionality is incredible," Taylor continued. "Having the ability to correct for any low-end buildup in the array before ever firing up an amplifier is huge. The accuracy of the predicted frequency response is superb. In essence, by taking the PA out of the room, you are able to focus on setting up the PA first, then dealing with the interactions of the room, and finally tweaking the system to best accommodate the specific requirements of the show itself."

"In addition, the bandpass testing and monitoring functions take information and control panels that would otherwise need to be accessed across multiple pages, and integrates them into a unified graphical interface," Taylor said. "I can live on just one or two pages during the show to make sure that everything is functioning within limits and behaving properly."

"I will be using JBL HiQnet Performance Manager extensively on future tours. It saves a lot of time and ultimately enables us to deliver better sound to our artists and clients," concluded Taylor.

HARMAN’s Soundcraft® Vi1 Delivers it Strait for Matthew Manasse

LONDON, United Kingdom – When members of Dire Straits got back together for a one-off charity event at the Albert Hall, sound engineer Matthew Manasse was asked to look after the front of house mix. Having previous connections with keyboard player Alan Clark, and being a close colleague of their original engineer Robert Collins, Matthew was an obvious choice.

The incredible response led to repeated demands for the band to play again—and so ‘The Straits’ took to the road. This culminated in a full European tour recently that saw Matthew Manasse mixing the shows on a Soundcraft Vi1.

Having toured with some of the biggest names in the industry, from Dave Brubeck and Katie Melua to Rufus Wainwright and Pink, Manasse is highly regarded in the world of professional audio. However, in a world of ever tightening budgets he had become disillusioned with the touring market and left it to concentrate on running his new venture, Bluefish Live Events, to service the corporate events market.

But The Straits tour proved irresistible and as an early champion of Soundcraft’s Vi6, he had no hesitation in turning again to the company’s digital platform. The Vi1 was provided by Sound Technology, HARMAN’s distributor in the UK and ROI.

“I really loved the Vi6 so when the Vi1 was suggested I was initially a little concerned that its compact size might make it difficult or slow to navigate,” he admitted. “There are only 16 input faders visible at any one time and with 44 inputs from the stage I was worried that I’d be constantly switching between the layers and that this would take my attention away from the mix.”

Fortunately, Soundcraft was one step ahead. “There are five user definable fader layers so I’ve been able to group together the inputs that I need for different elements of the show,” Manasse said. “Accessing the right channel has never been so easy. With sound levels ranging from around 70dB up to the dramatic peaks of around 108dB, I needed a digital console that was versatile, small and flexible and that could handle that dynamic range without running out of headroom.”

The system has been programmed so there is a page for the opening number, a different page for the rocky songs and a third for the more acoustic ones. “On each of these fader pages I have the key input channels visible that I know I’ll need to access quickly,” Matthew continued. “Obviously some channels, such as the lead vocal, will appear on all these pages but that’s what makes this desk so flexible. I always have the inputs I need at my fingertips.”

Whereas previously he would simply recall a snapshot for every song, with the user definable layers he’s decided to mix the show on the fly, making the experience a lot more fun. “This has the effect of keeping the whole mix fresh as I have to stay completely involved.”

The other area where the console scores highly is on the output section. Concert Sound Clair, which has a long history with both Manasse and Dire Straits, is providing a monitor system and FOH control for the tour.

“As we aren’t able to carry a full PA system, CSC had given me an advanced processor as part of the package so that I could take complete control of the house systems that I’m using—but due to the number of matrix outputs on the Vi1, all with delay and EQ, I haven’t needed it once,” Manasse added.

CSC also provided a Vi stagerack, adding 64 mic/line inputs on stage to the 32 on the back of the console, which was a further bonus. The sound engineer noted that since the Soundcraft preamps are modelled on the Studer, this provided him with “an exceptional sound.”

The Vi1 also offers four Lexicon effects engines, which Manasse has been using sparingly on percussion, acoustic guitar, sax, vocals and the signature National steel guitar. “I am a huge fan of the built-in Lexicon effects,” he said, “and the Vistonics™ interface on the Vi1 makes it is so much more flexible and intuitive.”

One facility on the Vi1, which he regards as essential, is the input channel delay. “A few years ago I started to experiment with time alignment and now apply this to every mic on stage; it’s time consuming but the results speak for themselves as there is a marked increase in clarity and depth within the mix.The big advantage is that I can keep the acoustic guitars sounding like acoustic guitars, I don’t have to use the EQ to make them cut through as I’m already creating the ‘space’ with the time correction. By reducing the amount of ‘mess’ onstage I can keep the whole band sounding more natural.”

With Gareth Lewis on monitors and Nick Belshaw tour managing, the house engineer reflects on a thoroughly enjoyable tour of duty, before he again replaces the world of circuit venues (averaging out at around 1,500 capacity), to four and five star hotel conference and banqueting rooms.

HARMAN's DigiTech Launches New Spring Tank Reverb Pedal

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - DigiTech today announced that the new Spring Tank reverb pedal for the iStomp(tm) is now available from the DigiTech Stomp Shop app on iTunes. The Spring Tank pedal provides the rich spring reverb effect found in vintage amplifiers and on numerous classic and contemporary recordings. Not only does the new offering produce a rich stereo spring reverb effect, it also produces the distinctive "boing" artifact unique to spring reverb trays that guitar players have come to know and love.

While the Spring Tank reverb pedal delivers the great sound of a traditional spring reverb, it also takes the concept of a spring reverb a step farther. Unlike single knob reverb effects found in guitar amps, the Spring Tank provides four separate knobs to control Reverb level, Boing, Twang and Tone. The pedal has a cool, unusual design, morphing a traditional spring tank into the form of a classic stompbox.

The Spring Tank pedal is the 26th and latest pedal added to the Stomp Shop app for use with the iStomp downloadable pedal. The Stomp Shop debuted in January 2012 with an initial compliment of 22 pedals ranging in price from US$1.99 to US$9.99. Each month DigiTech continues to add new pedals to the pedal line to bring guitar players fresh new options. Using the digital download format of the iStomp allows DigiTech to put many new and unusual pedals into guitar players' hands vey quickly.

"This is one of many new pedals to come as we expand the iStomp pedal line. The pedals in the Stomp Shop offer a wide variety of high-quality tones and effects that musicians are looking for. The new Spring Tank pedal is no exception," stated Rob Urry, vice president, HARMAN Professional Division and general manager of Signal Processing and Amplifier Business Units.

The Spring Tank pedal is now available for only US$0.99. This special launch price will run through April 30, 2012, after which it will move to its regular price of US$9.99.

The DigiTech iStomp is an entirely new concept in guitar stompboxes that allows musicians to turn the iStomp into any pedal in the Stomp Shop. Offering almost limitless sonic possibilities, the iStomp connects to an Apple iOS device where musicians can use the Stomp Shop app to load it with the pedal of their choice. The Stomp Shop is a free app and comes with two of the most popular requested pedals, the DigiTech Total Recall(tm) digital delay and the DigiTech Redline(tm) Overdrive. It also gives access to additional pedals that musicians can browse, try out, and purchase. With the iStomp, DigiTech can deliver an ever expanding variety of great new pedals to guitar players worldwide via the Stomp Shop app.

HARMAN's DigiTech Launches the New Sound-Off(tm) Pedal for the iStomp(tm) Downloadable Pedal

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - HARMAN's DigiTech announces the availability of the new Sound-Off pedal for the iStomp(tm) downloadable stompbox. DigiTech is broadening the range of the pedal line within the Stomp Shop(tm) app to now provide an easy to use utility pedal. The Sound-Off is a simple pedal that provides a momentary switch to completely shut the audio signal off when the button is pressed and brings it back when released. This on/off function allows guitarists to create a special effect similar to the pickup on/off switch found on some guitars.

"For guitarists who are looking to create a choppy effect that can be controlled at their feet, the Sound-Off is a flexible solution they can quickly add to their arsenal," stated Rob Urry, vice president, HARMAN Professional Division and general manager of Signal Processing and Amplifier Business Units, "and because we are using digital download technology, we are able to add very unique pedals like the Sound-Off in the Stomp Shop frequently."

The Sound-Off pedal is now available from the DigiTech Stomp Shop at an introductory price of only US$0.99. This special price will run through April 30, 2012. After the introductory period it will change to its regular price of US$1.99.

Televisa San Ángel Standardizes on HARMAN Studer OnAir 3000 Consoles

SAN ÁNGEL, Mexico - In an upgrade that dramatically improves the workflow and quality of its audio system, Televisa in Mexico recently purchased eight HARMAN Studer OnAir 3000 consoles for use in its San Ángel facility. Televisa is the largest media conglomerate in Latin America and in the Spanish-speaking world.

Televisa San Ángel is Televisa's center of production for "telenovelas," soap operas, game shows and reality television, and handles the majority of post-production work for Televisa. San Ángel also contains the Televisa Center of Artistic Education, whose students form more than 85 percent of Televisa's production staff.

Each of the 18-fader models at Televista San Ángel is being used in separate studios to mix audio for a variety of programming. "We needed special configurations on the consoles because the studios are handling multiple programs," said Rafael Alfaro Bugarini of Televisa.

"We wanted consistency throughout the facility, which is why we decided to have the same model console in eight different rooms," Alfaro added. "We also wanted to grow in terms of sound quality, which is why we chose the OnAir 3000 in particular."

The Studer OnAir 3000's range of compact and elegant control surface modules incorporates the same patented "Touch'n'Action" philosophy on color GUI screens. The console has three main stereo mix buses plus an audition facility, four stereo AUX buses, 16 mix-minus sends configurable as AUXes, and three independent studio monitoring circuits and offers full dynamics, EQ and input/output routing in each channel.

"With the OnAir 3000 console, we are able to have more capability with each fader," Alfaro noted. "This means we can do so much more with less consoles. And the consoles aren't as big, but they offer more features than other models."

HARMAN’s AKG Discreet Acoustics Modular PLUS Series Delivers Improved Modularity And Quality For Conferencing And Presentations

FRANKFURT, Germany – With a continued focus of providing the highest quality and most versatile microphones available, HARMAN’s AKG announces its latest addition to its installed systems – the Discreet Acoustics Modular PLUS Series. With a wide range of goosenecks and installation modules available, compatible with existing AKG CS5 modules, the Discreet Modular PLUS Series offers optimal adaptation for all types of room setups and speakers, with quick microphone capsule exchange – options never before available from a conferencing system.

The reliability stemming from the models’ LED Ring underscores the ability to reduce the risk of operating errors, sturdy material to reduce fatigue and improved protection from signal block outs. The LED Ring uses special circuitry to operate off standard phantom power, as two separate leads carry supply voltage and provide extra shielding to the audio signal.

The Modular PLUS Series’ interface module connects the high-quality gooseneck to the phantom power source, which adds flexibility to all mounting modules. The self-cleaning connector is reliable, inconspicuous and safe – allowing for simplified and cost-effective microphone replacement. The goosenecks themselves are tested under extreme circumstances, bent and twisted into extreme shapes, ensuring their quality and flexibility.

“AKG has specialized in developing, designing and manufacturing quality microphone capsules for more than 60 years and the Discreet Acoustics Modular PLUS Series is a testament to the continued strategy to offer the best in sound in any mic’d application,” stated Thomas Giczy, Business Development Manager Installed Sound and Conferencing, AKG. “The variety offered through the Modular PLUS Series, from the power offerings to the mounting and capsule modules, is the best in class and will provide optimum audio for videoconferencing or presentations around the world.”

The CK43 supercardioid condenser capsule offers users a 95-degree pickup angle, ideal for situations where unwanted noise pickup is a concern. The CK49 is a reference condenser capsule with an 80-degree pickup, with clean, off-axis response. It is ideal for use with inexperienced speakers, focusing on the voice when the speaker is distant, and reducing pop if close to the mic.

AKG’s Gooseneck GN155M is a 155cm module with a heavy, shock-mount floor stand that works perfectly as a stand-alone unit or on stages placed in front of a large group of instruments or speakers. HM1000M is a reference-hanging module used to fly mics from the ceiling to record or reinforce music or speech in houses of worship, theatres or conference halls.

AKG’s PAE M reference powering module offers the phantom power for fixed and mobile installation, providing a gold-plated, 3-pin XLR connector. Its wide voltage range fits most mic mixers. PAESP M is a programmable power module for fixed and mobile installation, fitted with a unique binary coded decimal switch to recall operating modes. PAESP M’s noiseless mic switch reduces its level by 26dB, avoiding the irritating crackling sound when phantom power is interrupted. The PAE5 M provides a 5-pin XLR connection allowing audio signal and central voltage to be fed separately.

The afternoon listening sessions featured comparative listening tests between 12 deep hangs of VTX V25, VERTEC® VT4889 and L-Acoustics K1. All arrays were focused for 100-meter throw distance with identical angles and were carefully equalized and level-matched in order to provide a fair comparison.

Following comparative listening tests, Gert Sanner, HARMAN Professional EMEA Tour Sound Manager, demonstrated full left-right VTX system performance including subwoofers using show multi-tracks from Deep Purple to better represent the dynamics of real-world program material. Guest CD tracks were also used in the listening tests and attendees had an opportunity to gauge system performance using their own reference material.

“The VTX System Listening Experience was an intense, educational and overwhelmingly positive day, with a huge turnout and excellent results,” Bauman commented. “The event enabled us to showcase the distinct advantages of the VTX Line Array Series to a large number of professionals in the region and it was an excellent opportunity to see how the system performed in an outdoor open air situation as a follow-on to arena format testing at the LA Forum VTX Listening Experience.”

In January, AED Rent signed on as the first adopter of JBL’s VTX V25 line array loudspeaker and as a Strategic Partner in the VTX Network. AED Rent is known throughout Europe as a market leader and a total solution provider to AV rental companies exclusively, making the company an ideal candidate to help introduce the revolutionary VTX Series to the industry.

“We chose to purchase the JBL V25 because I think JBL has it spot-on for the future,” said Glenn Roggeman, CEO of the AED group. “JBL has always been known as the best component builder. Today, thanks to Paul Bauman, they not only have the components, but also the speaker boxes to make a terrific system.”

Audio XL, JBL’s distributor for Benelux, provided outstanding support, planning and execution of the event.

HARMAN’s JBL Professional Expands VTX Line Array Series With S28 and G28 Subwoofers at Prolight & Sound 2012

FRANKFURT, Germany – At Prolight & Sound 2012, HARMAN's JBL Professional is expanding its revolutionary next-generation VTX Line Array Series with the addition of two subwoofer models, the VTX S28 and VTX G28.

“In January, JBL introduced the first product in the VTX Series—the V25—and the new S28 and G28 subwoofers provide system technicians with a wealth of configuration options and unprecedented performance,” said Paul Bauman, Senior Manager, Tour Sound, JBL Professional. “These new models truly represent a breakthrough in subwoofer design.”

The VTX S28 and G28 are dual 18-inch subwoofers, each employing two 2269H 18" transducers featuring Differential Drive® technology with two voice coils, two neodymium magnets and extremely high peak-to peak excursion capabilities to deliver world-class, extended low-frequency performance. Both models are reverse cardioid-arrayable.

The VTX S28 can be suspended or ground-stacked and is cardioid-arrayable in either configuration for improved rear rejection. Compatible with VTX V25 suspension, the S28 can be suspended at the top of V25 arrays to extend the effective low-frequency line length, providing improved vertical pattern control combined with improved rear rejection when used in cardioid mode.

Alternatively, S28 arrays (cardioid or front-firing) can be suspended beside or behind V25 arrays. For theatrical sound design, the S28 can be suspended in the middle of flown V25 arrays to facilitate balcony and floor coverage by allowing improved under-balcony penetration. Larger cardioid configurations are also effective where S28 is suspended or ground-stacked in multiple cardioid blocks, each block consisting of three enclosures.

The VTX G28 is ground-stackable, but with a practical form factor for convenient stacking and additional enclosure volume, plus port tuning that delivers true sub performance down to 22 Hz @ -10 dB.

Like all JBL Professional products, the VTX subwoofers are comprehensively tested in JBL’s power testing facilities. Unique in the industry, during the design phase JBL power testing submits each component and system to 100 hours of continuous, high level input, ensuring that your system will deliver extraordinary sound even after years of hard use and thousands of hours of performance.

Like all VTX Series models, the S28 and G28 feature Crown Audio VRack DSP and amplification. VRack is a rugged touring rack fitted with three Crown I-Tech HD Series power amplifiers, power input panel, and custom-engineered input/output panels that is available in two configurations: VRack

12000 and VRack 4 x 3500 are loaded with three IT 12000HD and three IT 4 x 3500HD amplifiers, respectively.

Apart from the performance advantage of a standard package ensuring that VTX Series enclosures are optimally powered and processed, VRack ensures compatibility for cross rental between VTX Network Partners. Since VRack is supplied with all components installed and internally connected, there is also no need for laborious rack building; no chance that a component might be improperly connected; and a dramatically lower chance of connection failure.

VTX’s patented S.A.F.E. suspension system is streamlined for speed and efficiency with improved hardware for faster setup with fewer pinning operations and greater security. A custom-designed protective cover and dolly makes transport easy and the suspension process fast, efficient and safe. Vertical Transporters will be available allowing for transport of four V25 enclosures or three S28 enclosures in either front-firing or cardioid mode.

HARMAN’s AKG Relaunches Classic Project Studio Line Of Condenser Microphones

FRANKFURT, Germany – Originally launched in 1993, HARMAN’s AKG C3000 condenser microphone brought a remarkable level of quality and performance to musicians and sound engineers with a foundation of audio perfection and reliability. With the C2000, C4000 and C4500 BC debuting in the following years, the Project Studio Line was born. Nearly 20 years later, AKG’s workhorse C3000 is back, designed as a cost-effective, aesthetically beautiful mic, channelling the popular characteristics it maintained in the ‘90s.

The revamped Project Studio Line focuses on the home recording/project studio market, but the mics, underscoring the AKG’s reputation for versatility, perform just as well on stage. The new designs of the C2000, 3000, 4000 and 4500 BC maintain many of the technical aspects of the earlier models, but are now encased in a more sleek design, showcasing AKG’s quality and design work. The line’s edge-terminated capsule mimics AKG’s premium line of mics, including the C414 and C12VR.

“AKG’s new Project Studio Line takes a fresh look at a technology that has stayed true to the recording industry for 20 years, which is testament to the quality and reliability of our world-leading microphones,” stated Thomas Stubics, product marketing manager, recording and broadcast, AKG. “The relaunch of C3000 and company offers artists and engineers looking for a cost-effective, high-quality solution the opportunity to continue doing what they love, channelling their art in tremendous, warm and clear sound.”

The C3000 is best used for miking lead vocals, electric and acoustics guitars and for drum overhead applications. Its switchable attenuation pad and low-cut filter enable high SPL up to 150dB and eliminates proximity effects. The C2000 small-diaphragm condenser sounds like a real large-diaphragm microphone but at a more affordable price. It is ideal for vocals, brass and percussions thanks to its great transient response and remarkable low end. Its low-noise electronics ensure low distortion and a high dynamic range.

The C4000’s high-performance, multi-pattern, large-diaphragm design provides exceptionally high headroom and low self-noise. With one of the widest dynamic ranges for condenser mics, the microphone provides users with excellent results in the studio or on stage. Its warm, dark-sounding character is perfect for thin vocals, bright brass and acoustic guitars.

AKG’s C4500 BC is specially designed for on-air broadcast purposes. The mic is designed with cardioid pickup for voice friendly tuning and low proximity effect, along with high RF/EMI insensitivity. Its low noise and 165dB maximum SPL capability make it an ideal tool for close micing of low instruments, such as bass drums, low brass and guitar amps.

HARMAN's Studer 22-Fader Vista 5 M2 Digital Console Offers Ideal Features for Theatre Applications

FRANKFURT, Germany - At Prolight & Sound 2012, HARMAN's Studer is showcasing the 22-fader option of its popular Vista 5 M2 range of digital consoles. While also designed for broadcast applications, this low-cost Vista console option offers a unique feature set that is ideal for theatre environments.

The Vista 5 M2 22-fader console is equipped with Vista software version 4.2, which greatly enhances the sound design and production workflow for cue-based theater productions. The software provides extended cue list functions including time-based cue recall, MIDI MMC commands for sound FX playback triggers, as well as the introduction of some brand new cue events.

Characters in a musical or play can now be given any desired library entry (e.g. a special EQ setting) on a cue by cue basis. This allows easy adjustment, either temporary or permanent, of these library settings, as well as a very straightforward way to replace the settings of an actor with replacement-actor or understudy settings. VCA assigns and muting of channels can now also be entered on a cue by cue basis, without the use of snapshots, for a much easier and comprehensive way of building a show.

Vista software version 4.2 also offers the Virtual Vista PC-based online and offline editor, so the sound engineer can move around the theatre and make adjustments to level and EQ from all the key audience seating positions, live. This can also function as a console control backup, working in parallel with the desk.

The 22-fader version of the Studer Vista 5 M2 offers the smallest footprint of any Vista console. This not only provides a compact, easily navigable interface for engineers, but also enables theatres to dedicate more space to additional seating, making the console an attractive revenue-generating option as well.

The 22-fader version is optionally equipped with new TFT metering, capable of displaying signal levels from mono through to 5.1 channels on each input, with a configurable lower area which can be used to display bus assignments, surround images or the unique 'History Mode', where a scrolling audio waveform displays signal anomalies and highlights them for up to 50 seconds to allow the engineer to identify where the event occurred. Metering for 'layer 2' signals can also be viewed, while the Control Bay screen can be used to provide configurable user pages with up to 40 meters. When the TFT meter bridge is fitted, the external GC screen becomes an integral part of the chassis.

The Vista 5 family has found its home in all kinds of broadcast and theatre production facilities around the world. Existing Vista 5 owners will be pleased to learn that their console may be easily upgraded to the M2 version to be ready for the optional meter bridge, which is a simple add-on to the console chassis.

To provide a cost-effective package with the 22-fader console, Studer also offers the optional Compact Stagebox, which offers a high density of I/O connections in only 4U of rack space. The modular unit is fully configurable but is offered with a standard configuration of 32 mic/line inputs and 16 line outputs. Optionally, the Compact Stagebox can be equipped with an additional 16 mic/line input module instead of the output module, then providing 48 inputs. Alternatively, up to three output modules resulting in 48 outputs may be fitted.

The expansion slots for standard Studer D21m I/O cards may be used for interfaces connecting to most popular digital formats, including CobraNet(r) or Aviom A-Net(r) 16, Ethersound, ADAT, TDIF, SDI (SD/HD/3G), Dolby(r) E and Dolby Digital. A MADI recording interface can be fitted to the expansion slots as well.

HARMAN's JBL Professional Debuts PRX400 Series Portable PA Loudspeakers at Prolight & Sound 2012

FRANKFURT, Germany - HARMAN's JBL Professional today announced the European introduction of its PRX400 Series of passive portable loudspeakers, designed to bring true professional-quality performance, power handling and durability to more affordable price points. The new JBL PRX400 Series includes the 15-inch PRX415M, 12-inch PRX412M and dual 15-inch PRX425 loudspeakers, as well as the 18-inch PRX418 subwoofer.

The PRX415M and PRX412M can be used as either mains or monitors, and when used with the PRX418 subwoofer, provide a sat/subwoofer system capable of delivering 135dB of full-range, high-quality sound. The PRX425 dual-15-inch, 2-way speaker is ideal for DJs and bands that require powerful low-frequency extension from the convenience of a standalone cabinet.

"Since their introduction, our PRX600 Series portable PA loudspeakers have been tremendously popular with touring musicians, DJs and in a variety of live performance venues," said Richard Ruse, Senior Director of Worldwide Sales, JBL Professional. "Our new PRX400 Series models offer the same exceptional sound and rugged reliability in a passive loudspeaker format, at pricing that offers outstanding value in its category."

JBL PRX400 loudspeakers are designed to work hand in hand with Crown Audio's powerful and innovative XTi2 Series amplifiers. Crown XTi2 amplifiers incorporate enhanced pre-set performance tunings for PRX400 Series loudspeakers, including crossover points for a sat/subwoofer setup, and optimized parametric filter that bring out the full potential of PRX400 Series loudspeakers. JBL PRX400 tunings will also be available in the dbx DriveRack(r) PA+ signal processor/complete loudspeaker management system.

JBL PRX400 Series loudspeakers utilize extremely high-quality, tour-tested drivers and components to deliver clear, detailed and dynamic sound for bands, DJs, nightclubs, schools, houses of worship or other professional touring and installed sound applications. They feature Neutrik(r) SpeakON combination connectors and are built from lightweight, yet extremely tough 18mm birch/poplar multi-laminate hardwood covered in JBL's resilient DuraFlex(tm) covering. All PRX400 Series models feature rugged 16 gauge steel grilles.

JBL PRX400 Series loudspeakers offer versatile installation options. All full-range models incorporate twelve M-10 suspension points and hardened steel eyebolts for safe hanging in light-duty installations. Built-in dual-angle pole-mount sockets enable the PRX415M and PRX412M to be mounted either straight out or at a 10-degree downward angle to deliver the best audience coverage pattern. With a 10-degree down angle, the speakers can be aimed down at the audience, keeping sonic reflections off the back wall for better clarity and more efficient coverage. In addition, all PRX400 models feature ergonomic handles made from road-tough, lightweight glass-filled nylon.

In common with all JBL Professional products, PRX400 Series loudspeakers have survived JBL's 100-hour power test, in which they are submitted to 100 hours of continuous, high-level input. The speakers also go through a barrage of unforgiving environmental and strength tests including harsh temperatures and humidity, ensuring they will perform perfectly anywhere. All PRX400 models incorporate JBL's Sonic Guard speaker protection circuit that automatically attenuates the signal going into the high-frequency section of the speaker if too much input signal is detected, and restores normal operation when the overload condition passes.

HARMAN’s Soundcraft® Si Compact Takes Giant Leap With V2

FRANKFURT, Germany - HARMAN Soundcraft's popular small-format (but big-hearted) digital console Si Compact has received a major upgrade with the V2 software release.

The new free upgrade provides more than 23 major new features, updates and enhancements; the first welcome addition being eight additional DSP channels expanding the Si Compact 16 and Si Compact 24 to 32 and 40 inputs to mix, respectively.

Of particular note is the new user configurable fader layers allowing input channels to be reassigned anywhere on either input layer and any bus master reassigned to either master layer. Now an engineer can put the inputs and returns where he or she most needs them, for example, having the main vocal or presenter always in position 1 on both input fader layers, or mixing aux and matrix masters on a single bus layer to reduce the number of layer changes.

Another particularly useful function introduced in V2 is D.O.G.S (Direct Output Gain Stabilisation). A common frustration for engineers is when two consoles (FOH and Monitors) share the same source such as a mic on stage; the mix balance on the second (slave) console can be overridden if the engineer at the master console changes the mic gain and in some environments this could also result in feedback in the slave system. Using a connection topology where the slave console is fed from a pre-fade direct output of the master, DOGS can compensate for the gain adjustment maintaining original system gain between mic in and direct out. One of the unique advantages of DOGS is since stabilisation occurs 'locally' in the master console only this component requires the DOGS system and all other equipment connected to the master can benefit from the feature.

Selective Copy & Paste is now implemented allowing all or part of a selected channel or bus to be copied and pasted elsewhere. This basic functionality is augmented with the ability to copy and paste individual bus or matrix mixes and copy/paste FX presets between Lexicon processors. Enhanced MIDI control allows snapshots to be recalled from any external devices capable of sending simple program change messages.

A new security mode prevents unauthorised access to key functions; as well as 'total lockdown' security can be tailored for different 'operator access' levels for example locking out house EQ and processing for guest engineers whilst allowing access for in-house operators.

Other enhancements include additional information displayed in the Function Focus window on the touch screen, improved matrix mix facilities, show file & folder management, better navigation, improved default settings, HPF settings, added EQ curve graphics and much more.

HARMAN's JBL Professional Introduces Next Generation VTX Line Array Series at Prolight & Sound 2012

FRANKFURT, Germany - HARMAN's JBL Professional today announced the European introduction of the VTX Line Array Series-a revolutionary product that builds on the company's 65-year heritage of loudspeaker design innovation and groundbreaking technology development. Designed for portable and fixed-venue system operators alike, the VTX Series features JBL's legendary sound quality coupled with the most advanced sound reinforcement technology and support available.

"Of all the achievements JBL has made over the years, the VTX Series stands as a milestone in the practical application of creative engineering," said Paul Bauman, Senior Manager, Tour Sound, JBL Professional. "VTX truly represents the next generation in line arrays-an evolution of JBL's industry-standard VERTEC(r) that heralds a new era in performance, system integration and user-friendliness."

The first product from the VTX Line Array Series is the VTX V25-a full-size, 3-way, high-directivity line array element. The VTX V25 features two 2000W, 15-inch Differential Drive(r) woofers mounted in die-cast aluminum baffles, with four 8-inch Differential Drive mid-range transducers and three of the revolutionary new D2 Dual-Diaphragm Dual-Voice-Coil Compression Drivers mounted on a 3rd generation waveguide and patented RBI Radiation Boundary Integrator(r) assembly.

At the heart of VTX is the D2 Dual Driver, a revolutionary device developed by JBL that dramatically improves the sound and performance of high frequencies. D2 overcomes the limitations of conventional compression driver technology: limited high frequency extension due to mass of the diaphragm and voice coil, and distortion characteristics that arise due to dome breakup modes.

JBL's patented Radiation Boundary Integrator combines the high frequency and mid-range sections of the VTX V25 so the transition across each band is uninterrupted, undistorted and seamless. A patent-pending, tuned resonant absorption chamber (TRAC) is integrated into the waveguide itself, effectively eliminating throat-related cancellations due to back pressure from the mid-range section. VTX's refined RBI waveguide implementation provides improved horizontal coverage-broader and more stable.

The VTX Series draws from the expertise and integration of the entire range of HARMAN Professional audio technologies. As a result, in addition to the best sound possible, setup, tuning, networking and controlling the VTX Series is efficient, intelligent and truly a system solution. For example, the VTX Series features Crown Audio VRack DSP and amplification. VRack is a rugged touring rack fitted with three Crown I-Tech HD Series power amplifiers, power input panel, and custom-engineered input/output panels that is available in two configurations: VRack 12000 and VRack 4 x 3500 are loaded with three IT 12000HD and three IT 4 x 3500HD amplifiers, respectively.

The patented workflow paradigm of the Performance Manager interface guides the system designer through the complete system design, configuration and control process and, in many ways, the entire process feels and acts like a simple step-by-step wizard.

Using HARMAN's JBL HiQnet Performance Manager(tm) control software and with reference to measured spatial response, circuit level gain and JBL Line Array Control Panel tapering adjustments are performed as a first step in system tuning with the VTX V25. Once SPL and frequency response has been optimized on a circuit level, global equalization can then be applied to the entire array to compensate for room-related effects. This patented approach to system tuning has been specifically designed into the workflow of Performance Manager.

VTX's patented SAFE suspension system is streamlined for speed and efficiency with improved hardware for faster setup with fewer pinning operations and greater security. A custom-designed protective cover and dolly makes transport easy and the suspension process fast, efficient and safe.

All suspension hardware is integrated into the enclosure and strategically positioned for fast and secure operation. Front flip hinges and captive rear hinge bars utilizing a unique Angle Stop Mechanism (ASM) allow for efficient assembly that is not only secure, but anti-rattle. Also included is provision for mounting a Laser Sighting Module accessory for greater ease and precision in array focus and system tuning.

The VTX Series complies with HARMAN's GreenEdge initiative, combining environmentally friendly design with dramatic energy savings without compromising the excellent performance for which HARMAN products are known.

Like all JBL Professional products, the VTX Series is comprehensively tested in JBL's power testing facilities. Unique in the industry, during the design phase JBL power testing submits each component and system to 100 hours of continuous, high level input, ensuring that your system will deliver extraordinary sound even after years of hard use and thousands of hours of performance.

"The VTX Series is a result of JBL's continued effort to deliver more powerful, more compact, lightweight and flexible sound reinforcement systems," Bauman commented. "JBL has invested heavily in the tools necessary to design, measure, evaluate and refine components throughout the development cycle. In addition to state-of-the-art CAD systems, we have developed proprietary R&D tools unique to JBL. With these tools, we are assured of meeting each product's intended design goals, able to find opportunities for even better performance, and perhaps most important, have the resources to develop technologies that never existed. The VTX System is a premier example of this."

HARMAN's JBL Professional Revolutionary D2 Dual Driver at the Heart of new VTX Line Array Series

FRANKFURT, Germany - With the European introduction of HARMAN's JBL Professional VTX Line Array Series, JBL is also unveiling the D2 Dual Driver-the revolutionary device that makes the VTX Series' dramatic improvements in high-frequency sound and performance possible.

The D2 Dual-Diaphragm Dual-Voice-Coil Compression Driver overcomes the limitations of conventional compression driver technology: limited high frequency extension due to mass of the diaphragm and voice coil, and distortion characteristics that arise due to dome breakup modes. Merging two compression drivers into a single, compact transducer with a single acoustical output, the D2 Dual Driver utilizes two voice coils, each with its own lightweight, polymer, annular diaphragm, its own magnet assembly, and its own specialized phasing plug. Instead of the large and 'heavy' single voice coil metal dome diaphragm of conventional compression drivers, D2 is driven by two light but strong voice coils, two motive "forces" instead of one, acoustically connected to a single exit chamber.

"With two smaller diaphragms and voice coils working on the same acoustical load, the VTX Line Array Series provides high efficiency and SPL, plus increased extreme high-frequency reproduction due to the smaller moving mass of each diaphragm and voice coil," said Paul Bauman, Senior Manager, Tour Sound, JBL Professional. "The D2 Dual Driver is a radical departure from traditional compression drivers and represents a monumental breakthrough in loudspeaker system design!"

The two annular polymer diaphragms have the same radiating area as a conventional single dome, and overall output and power handling are dramatically increased due to the lower moving mass and enhanced heat transfer obtained with two separate voice coils. The result is a compact compression driver with dramatically improved efficiency, power handling, smoother, extended high frequency response and significantly lower levels of nonlinear distortion.

Well-validated by objective measurements, D2's performance has also gone through exhaustive subjective listening tests, demonstrating its superior sound quality compared to traditional metallic, mono structure drivers. D2 provides an extreme output advantage over conventional systems allowing significantly higher array power density.

Compared to a conventional system, the D2 has double the number of voice coils and more than double the power handling, but with a 30 percent reduction in weight. This results in a dramatic increase in pure high frequency sound pressure levels in the same physical footprint. The power handling of the three D2 drivers used in the VTX V25 are each 200 watts per AES standard.
