ReelSound Productions Takes New HARMAN’s Soundcraft Si Compact 32 Console to Muddy Roots Music Festival

COOKEVILLE, Tennessee - Ronnie Reels, owner of ReelSound Productions, relied on his new HARMAN's Soundcraft Si Compact 32 digital console for numerous musical artists at the multi-day Muddy Roots Music Festival in Cookeville, Tennessee. Reels used the Si Compact 32 as the front-of-house console for the event, for which he mixed 30 different acts.

The Muddy Roots Music Festival marked the first time that Reels used the Si Compact 32 and he only had positive things to say about it. Reels had been a longtime fan of Soundcraft and decided to make the transition to a digital system. The Si Compact 32 made Reels’ transition easy, as Reels noticed similarities between other HARMAN and Studer products that he had used before. After using the Si Compact 32 at the Muddy Roots Festival, Reels stated, "It's already my favorite console, I love it. The learning curve is very short for this console."

When dealing with large festivals with multiple acts, numerous transitions need to be executed within short periods of time. "The console worked wonderfully, the sonic quality was awesome and the pre-amps are not harsh even when driven hard," stated Reels. "The compressors and gates sounded great, better than any console I've ever dealt with."

Other issues that posed challenges including temperatures reaching 100 degrees Fahrenheit and heavy rain. The Si Compact 32, however, survived beautifully. "Without the Si Compact, I'm not sure what would have happened," Reels said. "It ended up being a great weekend and I look forward to using it more and more."

ReelSound Productions is a full service sound reinforcement company serving Nashville, middle Tennessee, and the Southeast United States. Ronnie Reels can be contacted at 931-252-4752

HARMAN’s JBL EON515XT Portable Loudspeakers Help Spread The Message Of New America Singers

NORTHRIDGE, California – The New America Singers have been spreading their message throughout the world with the help of HARMAN’s JBL EON515XT speakers. Founded in the late 1960s, the performing group has brought people together, sharing ideas, experiences and thoughts and building future leaders out of their members. What originated as a simple social gathering soon became a way for all people to become inspired through the bond of music, dance and drama. In an effort to extend their reach the group started to explore different venues and organizations including public schools, military bases, and international conferences worldwide. The New America Singers tailor their performances to these diverse audiences and feature popular secular music, religious and patriotic music all with the intent of communicating the positive message of spirituality, hard work and commitment. The group has taken their ministry around the world to places as diverse as Asia, Europe, North America, Russia, Africa and even Australia.

When Chris Campbell joined New America Singers in 1992, he started working on the technology and production side of the project, giving the group more definition and style. “Everyone ‘digs’ music, it was easy to incorporate our message with sounds that touch everyone,” said Chris Campbell, Founder/Director, New America Singers.

Based out of three locations in California each consisting of a team of about 30 kids, the group needs to hit the road with little baggage. Traveling on a bus for six weeks and performing between four to 10 shows per day, it was imperative that the speakers provide maximum impact with minimal size and weight.

The JBL EON515XT portable loudspeaker was the perfect match for the group providing ample Crown power and pristine JBL quality sound. Chris purchased them the first year they were on the market and fell in love with the quality, performance and durability. “Nobody has connected with these speakers like we have” he explained, “being lightweight with accessible handles makes them easy for a 15-year-old boy or girl to carry around, even up hills! And because they’re self-powered, the EON515XT eliminates the need for an external amplifier, which means less equipment and faster set-up times. They’ve been so reliable we’ve purchased multiple pairs for all of our locations and now we simply trust that our audiences hear the best performance that we can deliver.”

HARMAN's Soundcraft Studer Teams With Julie’s Bicycle To Gear Towards A Greener Industry

POTTERS BAR, United Kingdom — Soundcraft Studer recently became an Associate member of Julie’s Bicycle, a not-for-profit organization working with the creative industries to identify and reduce their environmental impacts. The membership makes Soundcraft Studer the first technology manufacturer to join the Associates program and undergo Julie’s Bicycle’s “Industry Green” certification for its Potters Bar facility. The full Associate program will include site visits from Julie’s Bicycle consultants, as well as staff training and skills development to help build and enforce an environmental policy. This will translate into savings on costs and time, leading to more carbon-friendly production and increased efficiency as part of HARMAN's Green Edge program.

Julie’s Bicycle was started originally through the music industry four years ago as a way to catalyze change and provide a neutral point of view about how companies in the creative industries can truly “go green.” With half of Julie’s Bicycle’s team coming from within the music industry, and the other half scientists, this helped to combine viewpoints and produce “industry-tested” solutions. At a time when companies are trying to become more environmentally efficient, Julie’s Bicycle’s can act as a guide for this process, instead of companies having to “reinvent the wheel” by themselves.

The partnership creates a positive outlook not only for Soundcraft Studer, but also for the professional audio industry in general, demonstrating a joint responsibility in committing to change. Through working with Julie’s Bicycle, Soundcraft Studer will be able to identify processes to improve the environmental impact that leads from the manufacturing of its mixing consoles, all the way to actual use of Soundcraft Studer products in concerts, broadcast environments and more.

“We are thrilled to be extending our relationship with the music industry to technology manufacturers through our work with Soundcraft Studer,” says Catherine Langabeer, Operations Director for Julie’s Bicycle. “To tackle complex areas such as touring we need commitment right across the industry supply chain—from artists and their management, to promoters, venue managers and crucially their suppliers. With Soundcraft Studer we now have a new and exciting opportunity to improve the processes along the technology supply chain, and promote the role of the supplier in delivering greener options.”

“An important part of being an industry leader is having the foresight and initiative to bring about change when needed, and we hope that Soundcraft Studer’s partnership with Julie’s Bicycle will mark the beginning of an industry-wide commitment to more environmentally-conscious manufacturing processes,” says Keith Watson, Marketing Director, HARMAN Mixing Group. ”We are looking forward to a successful and impactful relationship with Julie’s Bicycle.”

DIGI Sports Raises Its Game With HARMAN’s Studer Vista 5 Console

BUDAPEST, Hungary — DIGI Sport of Hungary recently purchased a 42-channel HARMAN’s Studer Vista 5 digital mixing console for its new DIGI Sport Plus channel. As DIGI Sport Plus features a wealth of live programming, the Vista 5 was chosen for its versatility, sonic superiority and ease of use.

DIGI Sport Plus is a 24-hour sports channel that was launched as an extension of the DIGI Sport channel. DIGI Sport Plus televises a variety of live sporting events, including football, rugby, European handball and Moto GP racing.

This is the second Studer Vista 5 console for DIGI Sport, which purchased a 32-channel Vista 5 in 2010. Both consoles were sold through Studer’s Hungarian distributor, Audio Partner Ltd.

The Vista 5 is based on the Vistonics™ control interface, which offers visual reference at the exact place at which a parameter is changed. This makes for a very flexible and fast working mixing surface. The inputs and outputs as well as the entire DSP capacity are completely scalable and can be adapted to suit the individual needs.

“The control surface of the Vista 5 makes operation of the console very intuitive and the Vistonics user interface allows us to easily see what we’re doing when mixing,” said Zoltan Szele, Sound Engineer for DIGI Sport. “The Vista 5 allows us to easily build a bigger networked system, and we now have two consoles sharing I/O’s.”

Beijing Tianyin Caiyun Provides Complete HARMAN Audio Reinforcement For 2011 Miss Universe China Finals

BEIJING, China— Thirty-two contestants appeared at the Beijing MasterCard Center for the Miss Universe Competition for a chance to represent China in the worldwide contest. Supported by HARMAN Professional’s arsenal of audio reinforcement equipment, contractor Beijing Tianyin Caiyun International helped to broadcast the contest live on national and global networks, while supporting the live sound in the venue.

The PA system was constructed of 48 HARMAN JBL VERTEC VT4889® fullsize line array elements, 16 VT4880A fullsize arrayable subwoofers and eight VT4887A line array elements. Two sets of six VT4889’s hung left and right, separately from the main speakers, with four of the VT4887’s hung to compensate the front area. Eight more VT4880’s were deployed on each side, while two sets of 2 VT4889’s lined the sides of the auxiliary area. Two Soundcraft Vi6 digital consoles and one Vi1 digital console were used to mix the PA, stage feedback and broadcast audio. Fifty-six Crown iT9000HD digital amplifiers powered the rig, while BSS London BLU-160’s and dbx DriveRack260’s were used for processing. Twenty JBL PRX512M monitors lined the stage for performers.

HARMAN application expert Stuart Dingwall upgraded the factory settings of the VT4889’s and Crown amplifiers to Version 5, changing the frequency of the crossover point and overall tone to improve the sound quality. As a result, the sound quality of the event was increased and bass was more vigorous. High and low frequency SPL was within ±3dB for an amazing specification and live sound.

“It wasn’t a difficult decision for us when we decided to hang the VT4889 and 4880A’s,” stated Rao Yi of Beijing Taiyin Caiyun International. “The products are amazing and offered great sound during the show. We’ve provided sound for many events in the MasterCard Center and we understand the stadium very well.”

HARMAN’s Crown Audio Showcases Class-Leading Value and Performance, With XTi 2 Series Amplifiers For Portable PA

LONDON, United Kingdom — Resetting the standards for portable sound amplification, HARMAN’s Crown Audio is showcasing the XTi 2 Series of amplifiers. Offering increased control, an enhanced feature set and a sleeker design, the XTi 2 Series amplifiers bring together features and performance never before available in an amplifier designed for portable PA applications. Providing a complete suite of integrated speaker processing, the new XTi amplifiers eliminate the need for external crossovers, limiters, and EQs, immediately saving rack space and money.

The XTi 2 features enhanced control with Crown’s revolutionary PeakX Plus™ limiters. The limiters are derived from the same framework as those found in I-Tech HD and the new XLS DriveCore Series amplifiers allowing users to manipulate threshold, attack and release times. A new and improved subharmonic synthesizer offers more accurate control over which frequencies are targeted and can be tailored for a specific system or room setup.

Offering increased amplifier functionality, users now have Advanced Thermal Control giving them the ability to tailor the fan performance to their specific application. XTi 2 also increases the amount of presets a user can save and recall from 20 to 30. Enhancing power management, a new status section on the amplifier allows for the monitoring of power supply temperature and AC line voltage making troubleshooting even easier

“Crown’s proven reputation in the portable sound market for building amplifiers that provide the highest level of value and performance is unparalled. The new XTi 2 series pushes the industry threshold and redefines the feature set that users can and should come to expect from portable PA amplifiers,” stated Andy Flint, Marketing Manager for Crown.

XTi 2 amplifiers are also fully compatible with HiQnet™ Band Manager™ software. The free-of-charge application provides a sleek redesigned function-driven interface, which has been re-skinned to simplify system setup and management while enabling audio professionals, musicians, and engineers to configure and control a rack of Crown XTi and now XTi 2 series amplifiers.

The amplifiers now feature integrated rack handles and an enhanced cast front panel that is more durable. The XTi 2 1002, 2002, and 4002 weigh 18.5lbs and the XTi6002 weighs in at 24lbs.

Harman HiQnet™ is the world's first connectivity and control protocol that integrates all product categories in the signal chain for professional audio systems of all types, size, and applications. Harman HiQnet no longer requires the user to manage multiple disparate operating systems or be responsible for programming individual signal processors, speaker controllers, wireless microphone systems, and mixing consoles. Farnell Newton’s Class Is Now In Session Comes Alive With AKG

VIENNA, Austria – Farnell Newton, trumpeter, educator and a committed user of HARMAN’s AKG microphones, has released his first record, which merges a vast spectrum of genres, including jazz, R&B, Latin, funk and soul. Relying on the tried and tested reputation of AKG, Newton’s Class Is Now In Session was recorded using AKG’s C 214 microphone.

Introduced to AKG microphones in early 2010, Newton found a mic and clip that was gentle on his trumpet, which also offered a warm and clear sound for recording and live performances. As a highly accredited performer, who has worked alongside Stevie Wonder, Biz Markie, R. Kelly, Chaka Khan, Charlie Wilson, Erykah Badu, Ron Isley, Bootsy Collins, Fantasia, Najee and Will Downing, among others, it was important to have the perfect sound for his first solo project.

“I spent many long nights putting together a project of this caliber, working with many musicians and ensuring all of my ideas for a great record became a reality,” said Newton. “AKG gives me the confidence to perform at my highest ability. I know I sound great while using my mics and the album is a testament to that.”

Newton has a fine history for acclaimed performances, such as being a member of the BET/CENTRIC TV Soul Train Awards Band and performing with fellow AKG musician Mike Phillips, but he has an even deeper passion for teaching. At Portland State University, Newton is a professor of jazz trumpet, while he also conducts multiple student groups ranging from the PSU Latin Jazz/Salsa Ensemble to the Contemporary Jazz Ensemble. Newton is also developing a multicultural jazz education program in Portland, OR - The PDX Jazz Project - an organization for students ages 13-18, to preserve and continue the history of jazz through education and performances around the community.

“Teaching is one of my loves and to combine that with my love of music is a perfect fit for me,” continued Newton. “I am happy to be a part of the AKG family – to have my album sound its best through recording on the C 214. With AKG’s reputation in the industry, being a part of AKG’s history will bring amazing opportunities for my current and future projects and my students.”

As the world renowned arena gets ready to open the doors for its thirteenth season, fans will be treated upon entry to a brand-new $3.4 million HARMAN JBL Professional VERTEC® audio system, a premier line array loudspeaker system that is in use worldwide to support numerous international tours and special events. Following the recent installation of the new Panasonic LIVE 4HD video scoreboard system, the sound system upgrade was due in large part to address the arena’s need to provide the best audio system and technology available on the market to its tenant teams and national touring productions and concerts, as well as for special events like professional boxing. The new system is designed to enhance the sound of touring production shows by allowing them to selectively use the installed system in a signal-delayed capacity. STAPLES Center will provide touring sound crews with a Wi-Fi tablet for remotely adjusting delay times, EQ, and levels. By augmenting the incoming portable touring systems this available option will provide better coverage and sound quality throughout the arena.

“We are incredibly excited to unveil the brand new JBL system to kick off our thirteenth season,” said Lee Zeidman, Sr. Vice President & General Manager, STAPLES Center. “Technology has grown tremendously since we opened STAPLES Center in 1999 and as part of our overall annual upgrades we decided it was time for us to improve our audio system. It is important to us to keep providing a better fan experience for our guests and offer cutting edge audio technology to our tenants and the numerous tours and special events that we host each year.”

STAPLES Center’s new JBL VERTEC System is designed to provide maximum flexibility for handling the wide variety of events hosted by the arena. The control capabilities provided by HARMAN HiQnet System Architect™ Software guarantees rapid configurability of the system to meet different event programming requirements. The new system includes the following elements:

• Main Clusters: Eight arrays of JBL’s VT4889DP-DA three-way powered line array modules are in use for the main system. Each cluster contains between 11 and 13 cabinets, with special attention having been paid to improving sound coverage and clarity in the upper bowl seating areas through precise array positioning and focusing technique.

• Fill Clusters: Two dedicated fill clusters are specially positioned to cover the end seating areas specifically during basketball games. Each array contains four VT4889DP-DA cabinets.

• Subwoofer Clusters: Four subwoofer arrays, each comprising six JBL VT4880A dual 18” subwoofer enclosures, produce extended low frequencies to create a full range musical system.

“The specialized audio needs of a multi-purpose sports and entertainment venue like STAPLES Center, combined with today’s audience expectations for an exciting and immersive sound experience, require a truly unique solution,” observed JBL’s David Scheirman. “When we designed this new VERTEC system, it was with top-tier venue applications like STAPLES Center in mind. Our entire team took a personal interest in this project, and we took a hands-on approach to working with the designers, installers and venue staff to really dial-in this system. STAPLES Center is now equipped with our latest loudspeaker system technology, combining advanced networking capabilities with digital signal processing, integral power amplification and advanced control software. This is the largest and most comprehensive installation to date of JBL’s digitally-networked, powered VERTEC speakers.”

HARMAN’s Soundcraft Takes “Mixing With Professionals” Program to United States

NORTHRIDGE, California — HARMAN’s Soundcraft is bringing its “Mixing With Professionals” series to the United States for the first time with two seminars featuring Gert Sanner, front of house engineer for legendary rock band Deep Purple. The half-day seminars will take place at the HARMAN campus in Northridge, California, and will give attendees the opportunity to hear Sanner discuss his use of Soundcraft digital consoles in the high-pressure environment of live sound mixing for one of rock’s biggest bands.

“We’re extremely excited to have Gert Sanner at our first ‘Mixing With Professionals’ session in the United States,” says Keith Watson, Marketing Director, HARMAN Mixing Group. “With his professional experience and mastery of Soundcraft desks, Gert has so much to offer to seminar attendees that you just can’t find in a technical manual.”

“I’ve been using Soundcraft consoles because of their sound quality, ease of use and onboard effects, all of which can make an FOH mixer’s job a lot easier when the lights go down and the faders go up,” Sanner says. “As you can imagine, being the person responsible for the concert sound of one of the world’s major rock bands is not for the faint of heart. The Vi6 and other Soundcraft consoles have a host of well-thought-out features that are geared toward live sound mixing—especially when you have to make instant mixing decisions in the heat of the moment. I’m looking forward to sharing my knowledge at this seminar.”

The “Mixing With Professionals” seminars are free, and attendees can register by sending an e-mail to Soundcraft-usa@harman.com. The event is open to professionals wanting to learn more about the Soundcraft Vi Series digital consoles, those making the transition from analog to digital consoles, new engineers and others. In addition to the seminars, participants will also get a chance to tour the HARMAN campus and enjoy a light lunch with refreshments.

“When you want to attract the best crew in a tight labor market, you need to give them the best tools to work with, so they feel good about the quality of show they’re delivering,” says Scene Change’s Sydney Director Vicken Hekimian. “The quality of the equipment motivates the crew to work harder to make our clients happy, which is really important when you’re the underdog.”

As part of this strategy, Scene Change takes a democratic approach to major capital expenditure. All members of the senior crew are given a chance to test drive prospective new purchases. The search for new mixers was a long one. Many digital desks were judged to be not flexible enough to handle the last-minute nature of large corporate events. The Soundcraft Si1 emerged the victor.

The key selling point was the quality of the onboard control gear. External effects racks take up time and space that is often not available for tight-turnaround corporate shows, so a digital desk was the logical choice.

“There’s no questioning the quality of the onboard gear on the Si1,” says Hekimian. “BSS processing, dbx equalisation, and Lexicon effects are all proven products that we know and trust. It passed all the tests we could throw at it.”

Apart from removing the need for the external rack, the Si1’s compact footprint also helps in the corporate environment, as control areas are continually squeezed as clients and venues put more tables and guests in the room.

The Si1’s programmability has proved useful for touring shows too, with the ability to work on a setup externally on a laptop, then upload it to the desk via USB.

“Unlike some of the other desks we looked at, the Si1 integrates really well with the analog world,” Hekimian adds. “The whole input and output structure is really well thought out. It also looks really cool. The look and feel of your equipment is really important when you work with event producers who know their stuff. They’re sitting right next to the desk for the whole show, so you need gear that reassures them they’re working with professionals.”

HARMAN’s Crown Showcases ComTech DriveCore™ Series Amplifiers At PLASA 2011

LONDON, United Kingdom — Underscoring the transformative capabilities of HARMAN Crown’s chip-based technology, the company today placed a central emphasis on its ComTech DriveCore™ Series Amplifiers at PLASA 2011. The technology enables performance grade amplifiers to provide a smaller footprint for enhanced power in a range of fixed installations including executive boardrooms, education facilities, and luxury suites in hotels and stadiums.

The line, which consists of four models, offering up to eight channels at 150 watts per channel, are all one rack, fan-less and ultra-energy efficient. DriveCore chip technology offers greater than 90 percent efficiency with no compromise in performance, boasting a signal-to-noise ratio of 110dB. DriveCore also has patented feedback and protection circuits integrated into the silicon for fast and accurate response.

“Never before has there been an amplifier that systems integration professionals could look to as being specifically designed for smaller fixed installation environments,” said Marc Kellom, director of marketing for Crown. “We not only forever changed the way amplifiers will be engineered with our DriveCore chip technology but we also answered the call of our customers to design an amplifier that would meet the specific needs of projects that are a major aspect of their business.”

The DriveCore chip, which was co-developed with Texas Instruments, combines the amplifier drive stage into the power output stage (along with additional audio-signal functions) – circuits that are typically much larger in size and power requirements. As a result, power consumption is dramatically reduced, and the amplifiers are much more energy-efficient. The DriveCore design yields sonic benefits as well, thanks to tighter tolerances, better circuit matching and inherently lower noise.

Because of their greater efficiency and Class D design, ComTech DriveCore series amplifiers also produce less heat, a by-product of inefficient amplifier operation. As a result, the amplifiers do not need to use a fan or traditional large, heavy heat sinks, further reducing energy demands.

HARMAN’s Studer Announces New Team to Accelerate Growth in Broadcast Market

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands — A new look Studer was unveiled by Andy Trott, Harman’s VP of Soundcraft, Studer and AKG, (VP and General Manager Mixers, Microphones & Headphones), at Studer’s Global Partners Conference today. In addition to the appointment of Bruno Hochstrasser as Studer GM announced last month, the digital mixing systems business has added two more strategic appointments heading up R&D and Product Development, reporting to Bruno.

Firstly, Peter Glattli takes over as head of R&D at Studer’s Development Centre based in Regensdorf, Switzerland. Peter joins from Super Computing Systems, a long-term partner of Studer’s. He holds a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering from the ETH Zurich and his background includes developing Super Computing’s Object Oriented software group.

Peter commented, “During my recent workshops with the Studer R&D team I once again experienced the innovative spirit that impressed me so much 15 years ago when I started my career in the Studer D950 development team. It is this passion about music, broadcast and engineering excellence that is unique to this company. But this time we are not only building a new console—we will interconnect audio systems and workflows and we will extend Studer’s leadership in the mixing console usability domain.”

Secondly, Andrew Hills, previously a long-serving Studer stalwart re-joins the business to develop the new Product Management team to be based in Regensdorf. Andrew’s experience is vast—previously employed at the BBC, Neve and SSL, he then served Studer in a senior sales role, most recently responsible for the BBC account and highly instrumental in the Corporation’s record order for Studer consoles in 2010, he was also responsible for other strategic accounts across Europe and Asia. “It is a delight to be back at Studer and call my friends colleagues again,” Hills said. “I am looking forward to this exciting new role and, together with Peter, create new world-beating products for one of the most respected brands in professional audio.”

“We’ve made these changes to accelerate our R&D process which I felt was not being driven in the strategic direction we needed for the future,” added Andy Trott. “Peter has already gelled with the team and together they are developing the most exciting roadmap I’ve seen in this industry. This really is a NEW STUDER: new people, new strategies, new technologies and most importantly for our customers—new products—we’re announcing two new products at the show and this is just a start, we aim to drive our business faster and with more determination than ever before—this is a great place to be!”

HARMAN’s AKG Leads China’s Northeast Rock Festival Sound

Shenyang, China— Paving the way for perfect sound during performances by esteemed Chinese bands Fairy Manufacture and Harbin Savage Valley, an arsenal of HARMAN’s AKG microphones was deployed during the Northeast Rock Festival 2011, held at the Shenyang Rich Gate Shopping Center. The first large-scale music festival in the area led by local bands combined four major styles of music - Chinese underground music, Chinese rock chart toppers, Guitarchina and live house music to capture the attention of all fans in attendance.

AKG microphones surrounded each band as they performed to create the ultimate in sound for fans. On each drum set, concert engineers utilized the AKG Groove Pack – a P2 on the bass drum, three P4’s for the snare and toms and two P17 mics for overhead condensers. The high sensitivity and dynamic conduct of the Groove Pack mics represent the true sound and delicate details of the drum kit, which was a large factor in choosing AKG for the event.

AKG’s WMS450 wireless system was used, particularly the C2 mic, for vocals during the festival.

With AKG widely known throughout China as a hi-fi and recording brand, the Northeast Rock Festival was an opportunity for musicians to understand the strength and versatility of AKG during live performances. Generating a perfect atmosphere of sound, from the dynamics and sensitivity of the drums, to the wireless system for guitar and vocals is AKG’s vision. The festival was an opportunity to provide musicians a with shining example of AKG’ live performance capabilities.
