HARMAN’s Professional Audio Solutions Deployed For Presidential Speech During Tsinghua University’s Centennial Celebration

BEIJING, China – Regularly ranked as one of the top universities in China and around the world, Tsinghua University, also known as Qinghua, recently celebrated its 100th anniversary. Held at 24th Night, an arena capable of accommodating 11,000 spectators and 2,000 performers, the celebration was addressed by Chinese President Hu Jintao through a complete HARMAN Professional sound reinforcement system deployed on a temporary stage outside the venue.

The University relied on two HARMAN Soundcraft Vi6 digital consoles for mixing, 48 JBL VERTEC® VT4889 line fullsize array elements and 24 VT4880A arrayable subwoofers for main sound reinforcement, 16 VT4887 compact line array elements for near-field compensating speakers and 16 PRX512M monitors. Ninety Crown IT9000 amplifiers powered the system, processed through four BSS BLU-80 devices.

The event was divided into four chapters, each symbolizing the University. “Water,” symbolizing a the historical origin of Tsinghua; “Wood,” ten trees, symbolizing one hundred years of personnel training; “Clear,” for the spirit of the University; and “China,” as in all sides of the country celebrating as one.

Pick Of The Hits - Lexicon Featured in Musico Pro Magazine, May 2011

HARMAN’s Lexicon® PCM Native Reverb Bundle is the Plug-In of Choice for Matt Knobel

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Setai Recording Studio isn’t your average facility. It’s located in the penthouse of the Setai Hotel in South Beach, Florida. Matt Knobel is the Director of Operations and Chief Engineer for Setai Recording Studio. Knobel started his recording career working for some of the top facilities in New York and he went on to tour with Billy Joel as a keyboard technician, and joined major jingle production company JSM Music.

Then came a life-changing request to set up a Pro Tools system for Lenny Kravitz. What started out as a four-day job grew into a fourteen-year friendship and Knobel’s current position as head of Setai Recording Studio. Knobel has worked with artists including Kravitz, Mary J. Blige, Ricky Martin, Sheryl Crow, Busta Rhymes, Elton John, Chaka Khan and many others.

Knobel is noted for his sonic perfectionism, and has been responsible for many upgrades to Setai over the years – including a move to the HARMAN Lexicon PCM Native Reverb Plug-In Bundle. For years, the Lexicon 960L was his favorite reverb, but Knobel wanted to move to a plug-in reverb. It didn’t happen overnight.

“Until the Lexicon PCM Native Reverb Plug-In Bundle came along, the Lexicon 960L is the only digital reverb I would use,” notes Knobel. “I was never a fan of DAW (digital audio workstation) reverb plug-ins – until now.”

“The PCM Native Reverb Plug-In is a great complement to my 960L. Having the plug-in extends the amount of machines I can use, and I have convenient, immediate access to a wide selection of reverb types and instant recall of settings. The quality of the reverbs is exceptional – warm, rich and just stunning for adding depth and dimension to vocals, instruments and mixes,” added Knobel.

The Lexicon PCM Native Reverb Plug-In Bundle is designed to work with popular DAWs like Pro Tools® and Logic®, as well as with any other VST®, Audio Unit™ or RTAS®-compatible platform. Compatible with Windows® Vista, XP and 7 and Macintosh® computers, it offers seven unique Lexicon’s plug-ins including Vintage Plate, Plate, Hall, Room, Random Hall, Concert Hall and Chamber, along with hundreds of presets including classics from Lexicon’s extensive library of sounds.

Clair Systems And HARMAN JBL Loudspeakers Bring Bryn Mawr College’s Goodhart Hall Into Class Of Its Own

NORTHRIDGE, California – Illustrating the power and configurability of HARMAN JBL Professional loudspeakers, the newly renovated and expanded Goodhart Hall at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania now has a multifaceted new sound system that complements the hall’s multi-use theater space, courtesy of Clair Brothers Audio Systems, Inc.

As part of an extensive renovation, a new JBL sound system was also added. Designed with Saben Shawhan of Metropolitan Acoustics and installed by Clair Systems, the system meets the very specific needs of Goodhart Hall. The venue’s stage is used for theatrical applications like theater and dance, classical music recitals, pop music concerts, civic engagement activities such as debates and lectures, and even commencement ceremonies, so the PA system had to be incredibly flexible. “The system needs to handle both music and speech equally well, as well as provide excellent sound quality with a minimum of operator control and do it at a cost that an educational institution could afford,” explained Tim Mazur, Project Manager for Clair Systems and co-designer of the new PA systems at Goodhart Hall. “I was able to source just about everything I needed from HARMAN, which met all of those requirements and then some.”

In order to meet all of the theater’s application needs, Mazur designed what is essentially two completely separate PA systems – a center cluster that is designed for exceptional speech intelligibility and a left-right stereo system intended for music – that can also be combined into a single, completely integrated PA system. The center cluster is comprised of eight JBL VERTEC® VT4887 compact line array elements; the left-right system uses a flown pair of JBL AE Series AM6340 loudspeakers per side, rotated horizontally with a 90 x 50-degree dispersion pattern from the lower cabinet and a 60 x 40-degree pattern in the upper cabinet. Below each of these three PA sections is a JBL ASB6128 subwoofer. Five AC18 ceiling speakers for under-balcony fill complete coverage of the hall. Digital signal processing is accomplished using the BSS Soundweb London BLU-160 signal processor and BLU-120 networked I/O expanders, controlled from a BLU-10 wall-mounted programmable touchscreen remote controller. Crown CTs and MA amplifiers power the system. Onstage, performers use AKG microphones including six C1000 S condenser microphones, the D112 kick-drum microphone, a pair of classic C124 mics and two Crown PCC160 Phase Coherent Cardioid microphones, and have access to 16 channels of the renowned AKG WMS 450 Series wireless microphone system comprised of 16 D5 hand-held microphones and 16 matching beltpacks. Everything is configured modularly to meet the theater’s many user needs.

“The center cluster system and the left-right music system are each standalone PA systems, but they can be combined when both speech and music are needed for a performance,” said Mazur. The wireless microphones are similarly configured. “To get increased functionality, we configured them a four separate four-channel wireless systems, but arranged so that the antenna systems can be ganged together,” he explained.

Mazur noted the Hall’s technical and creative staffers were awed by the sound quality and appreciative of the systems’ ease of use and reliability. “In this renovation, they were essentially going from a typewriter to an iPad,” he said. “It had to be simple to use and not have a steep learning curve, and that’s what they got, at an excellent price that the college could afford but with no compromises in sound quality. This is an amazing and historic theater, and it now has a sound system worthy of the space.”

Detroit’s EMCEE Audio Production Relies On HARMAN JBL Loudspeakers

NORTHRIDGE, California – Founded on a mission to provide local acts and events with professional-grade equipment and knowledgeable engineers who truly care about providing excellent service, Detroit, Michigan-based EMCEE Audio Production has relied on HARMAN’s JBL Professional loudspeakers for more than five years. Co-owners Gerald “Curly” Wonch and Matt Matthews have built the company from the ground up, providing high-quality audio solutions to corporate and festival events as well as concerts, nightclubs and bars.

EMCEE owns a wide range of JBL loudspeakers, including SRX725 2-way portable speakers and SRX728S subwoofers, SRX712M stage monitors, VRX932LA Constant Curvature speakers and VRX918S subwoofers, and PRX512M powered stage monitors. EMCEE also relies on Crown XTi 4000 power amplifiers.

Working on a tight start-up budget five years ago with audio systems dealer Dave Short of Short Sound Systems, Wonch first began by stocking his speaker inventory with JBL’s affordable MPro series to support local bar shows. Soon enough, word spread about the quality of service EMCEE provided and Curly began supplying audio reinforcement for live shows in small concert venues. He quickly added to his supply, purchasing JBL’s larger and more powerful SRX systems.

“We started the business to offer our friends and fellow music lovers great service, and in doing so, we kept growing at a steady pace,” Wonch noted. “Then, when the festivals began calling, we knew we were doing something right.”

With the festival demand, Curly invested in JBL’s VRX series to provide the predictable, precise coverage needed for larger spaces, and if EMCEE encounters a large venue requiring an even larger setup, the company always provides JBL VERTEC® line array systems through regional rental-industry partners.

“Our JBL loudspeakers have been put through a wide series of tests in the field, and have always brought out the best in our clients. We aren’t working with platinum-selling artists, but all musicians want to put on their best performance at a gig,” Wonch continued. “With JBL speakers, we just do our own thing and have fun with our clients. Providing great solutions is our business and our success is synonymous with the quality equipment that HARMAN offers.”

Swiss Federal Office For Sport Auditorium Receives Complete HARMAN Upgrade

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — The Swiss Federal Office for Sport has recently undergone a major renovation including a complete HARMAN professional audio solution featuring components from BSS Audio, Crown and JBL. The office is a center of excellence for all sport-related issues, situated as one of four such sites across Switzerland.

All audio equipment used in the installation was supplied by HARMAN Professional distributor, Dr.W.A.Günther Audio Systems AG and the installation was handled by system integrator Kilchenmann AG.

In the main hall speech intelligibility was a major priority. Two JBL AM5212/95 series loudspeakers, finished in white, are being used as front speakers, with six JBL AC16 compact speakers as delays in the 335 sq. metre hall.

Signal processing is handled by two BSS Audio Soundweb London BLU-100 devices and a BLU-BOB2 break-out box / output expander with three Crown CDi amplifiers powering the system.

Ensuring compliance with Swiss regulations for noise emissions, the system was subject to thorough technical and qualitative inspection at the first measurement stage. Lars Scheidegger, from Kilchenmann AG, who was responsible for project management stated, “The system not only complies with all regulatory requirements, but satisfies the requirement with its clear sound quality and extraordinary intelligibility at any point in the room.”

Smaller rooms found off the main hall each are equipped with a pair of JBL Control 25 loudspeakers and Crown XLS 202 power amplifier.

Soundcheck Supplies HARMAN JBL VERTEC® Line Arrays For 70,000 at Justin Bieber Concert in the Philippines

NORTHRIDGE, California –Veteran concert sound supplier Soundcheck of Manila provided a massive HARMAN JBL VERTEC® line array system for Justin Bieber’s recent concert at the SM Mall of Asia Concert Grounds, the country’s premier venue for large-scale events. The show, part of Bieber’s “My World” tour which has spanned the globe since kicking off in June 2010, drew a total of 70,000 fans.

Providing complete audio services for one of the country’s most-anticipated pop music events in recent history, Soundcheck deployed a total of 72 VERTEC midsize line array elements, arranged in main left-right arrays of 16 each along with two eight-element out-fill arrays and additional signal-delayed arrays. The system was a mix of VT4888 and powered VT4888DP-DA units equipped with JBL DrivePack® technology and JBL’s new DPDA (Digital Audio) input modules with BSS Omnidrive HD™ processing. To establish a significant low-frequency presence for the show, Soundcheck’s system design was based on a nearly 1:1 ratio of subwoofers to full-range speakers in the main stage system. The company provided 20 JBL fullsize arrayable subwoofers, hung in left-right arrays of 10 each, while ground-stacking 24 ultra-long excursion arrayable subwoofers.

“We tuned and aligned the flown VT4880 subs to match and enhance the low-frequency bandpass of our primary line arrays, and then concentrated the sub-low frequencies with the VT4880A subwoofer arrays,” said Jaime Godinez, Owner of Soundcheck. “This format with a 5-way DSP configuration gave us the really ‘big’ sound we were looking for in an open-air setting. Justin Bieber is typically a Clair Global touring account, so the production had extremely high expectations. Justin’s mix engineer was very pleased with the results.”

Two signal-delay tower rings, comprising a total of four towers, were in place. These were set at approximately 90 meters (300 ft) and 140 meters (460 ft) from the stage. Each tower supported six JBL VT4888DP-DA powered midsize line array elements supplemented with JBL-loaded dual 18-inch subwoofers. For the performers on stage, eight VT4888DP loudspeakers and eight VRX918SP subwoofers were in use for side fills. For front fill, Soundcheck provided eight VRX932LAP powered Constant Curvature loudspeakers and four VRX918SP powered subwoofers. The system also included 12 VRX915M stage monitors.

All subwoofer crossover and speaker processing was achieved with Crown I-Tech amplifiers, with HD12000’s in use for the VT4880A’s and I-Tech 6000’s powering the VT4880’s. HARMAN’s HiQnet System Architect™ software was used for remote control and monitoring of the entire networked system. A Soundcraft Vi6 digital console was also on hand.

“We recently upgraded to JBL’s new DPDA digital-audio input module for all of our JBL DrivePack-equipped systems,” noted Godinez. “This now lets us leverage the BSS Omnidrive HD processing. And, from the convenient way the network cables now can be looped along with the box-positioning identification system, to the close integration with the HiQnet software, our setup and system tuning time has been dramatically shortened, especially on large and complex shows like this outdoor date for Justin Bieber.”

Soundcraft Vi6™ Consoles On Duty at Europe’s Largest AIDS Charity

VIENNA, Austria - Taking place each May in Vienna since 1993, Life Ball is Europe's largest AIDS charity event and this year once again featured a star-studded cast of artistes and VIPs, with the theme dedicated to the element of air under the slogan, “Spread the Wings of Tolerance.”

Leading the party and joining the 20,000-30,000 revelers in the Rathausplatz, outside Vienna’s City Hall were Janet Jackson, former US President Bill Clinton and Brooke Shields. Aside from music, fashion was also high on the agenda, and among the guests was world-famous designer, Vivian Westwood.

TV stations from all over the world attended, and for the main outdoor show audio coverage needed to extend across a distance of almost 200 meters (via three speaker delay lines) to the back of the Square. Handling the sound mix was a pair of Soundcraft Vi6’s — with Soundworx’s Klaus Hübner system teching for production company Redline Enterprise, overseeing the 96-input Vi6 at FOH, and Didi Hepp on a second Vi6 down in Monitor City.

For Hübner this year’s event proved particularly challenging as production built a stage with two large 9-tonne wings, which had to be relocated during the event.

He said that with so many artists appearing — and performing live for just one number — decisions as to whether the artist performed live or in playback mode often have to be made on the fly. “For instance, the orchestra was relocated to the catwalk and downgraded to playback. We also received information that Natasha Bedingfield and Natalia Kills would play live but the staging company was late with the setup of the wings which meant we ran out of rehearsal time, and the promoter decided to do all of them with playback (which was probably the better choice).”

However, having worked on at least half of the Life Ball events since 1993 Klaus Hübner is used to making decisions on the fly — and now accompanied by his favourite Soundcraft digital desk the entire process becomes easier.

“We originally set up the Vi6 for everyone to play live but in the end needed only about 32 channels plus FX. But you never know that in advance and we wanted to make sure we didn’t run out of channels.”

The desk was configured for MADI and an analogue split was provided for ORF, the Austrian TV station.

Having set up and optimized the system, Klaus Hübner worked alongside fellow engineer Andy Frey (of Freyaudio). “I work regularly with him on TV shows and always enjoy the experience. He cares about the show, and I care about the system. He really likes the Vi6 and also specifies it for his shows.”

The advantages of using a Vi6 for this type of versatile, multi-act show were self-evident. “The Vi6 is easy to use — it is flexible, reliable, sounds good … and has all the facilities we need.”

The fact that two engineers can work on it at the same time was another important attribute, he said. “It meant that sometimes when Andy Frey was operating rehearsals I could be preparing for the next rehearsal on the right bay.”

Klaus Hübner singled out the Vistonics II™ interface for special praise. “It is easy to use with the touchscreen, and the Copy & Paste facility is really important — in a stressful situation, with a lot of changes, it is a life-saver. As for the dynamics I love the Lexicon FX, and I use the De-esser as a dynamic EQ, which works perfectly.”

Each channel also features an 'F' (function) button which can be programmed more or less to the engineer’s preference — which is another huge bonus, he says.

“Finally, I just like the way that the Vi6 is self-explanatory … anyone familiar with digital desks can use this, and I personally never needed to refer to a manual.”

Radio and wired microphones at the Life Ball were supported by AKG and the sound engineers patched some spare backup radios on the second input. “So in event of emergency, it would have been easy to change the mics without the need to change the thinking of how to operate the show!”

HARMAN Soundcraft Si Compact 24 Digital Console Delivers Powerful Performance for Australia’s GenX Productions

SYDNEY, Australia — Founded in 2007, GenX Productions is a prominent sound and lighting contractor that specializes in live sound, corporate and private events. Founder and Managing Director Alan Jurcan has worked with notable Australian artists including Richard Clapton, Dave Leslie of Baby Animals, Sister2Sister, Tiffany Wood and many others. Jurcan recently made the move from analog to digital with the purchase of a HARMAN Soundcraft Si Compact 24 console.

“I have owned and used Soundcraft analog consoles for more than 10 years and have been very happy with the sound they produce, as well as their reliability,” Jurcan says. “So once I decided to move to digital I naturally looked at what Soundcraft had to offer, along with competitors’ models in the price range. I felt the Si Compact 24 outshines its competitors in many areas, especially when it came to user friendliness, and it had all the features and power one could ask for, especially considering its affordability. It also sounds great—clean and smooth, with that signature Soundcraft audio quality.”

The first thing Jurcan noticed when taking the console on the road was how easy it was to set up. “The console is really ‘hands-on,’ there’s a knob or button for just about every function and no confusing menus to go through,” he says. “I really like the fact that I can save everything I do on the console and recall all the settings at the next show. Whether it’s the front of house mix, monitor mix, EQ settings, compression settings or even just the track names, the Si Compact 24 will remember everything. This has really cut down on setup time, especially for those artists I work with on a regular basis. Thanks to the Soundcraft Virtual Si computer software, I can pre-configure the settings for a particular artist or show before I even take the console out of the road case.”

At first, Jurcan felt slightly uneasy without all his usual outboard gear, but the Si Compact’s built-in processing has simplified his patching and dramatically cut down on setup time. “I never run out of DSP power and the Lexicon reverbs and effects in this console are just magical,” he notes. “The compressor section is superb. You can compress pretty hard and never get the unwanted artifacts you sometimes notice with other compressors. In fact, two days after we received the console we brought it to a show without our usual racks or outboard effects. A gutsy move, but the console delivered the goods.”

HARMAN JBL VERTEC® Subcompact Line Arrays, SRX and VRX Speakers Spice Up the Sound for 2011 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival

NORTHRIDGE, California – The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival is one of the largest live music events in the world, and the recent 2011 Jazz Fest featured seven days of music on no less than a dozen stages. The Festival celebrated the indigenous music and culture of New Orleans and Louisiana, encompassing jazz, blues, R&B, gospel, folk, rock, country, bluegrass and numerous other styles. The Sound Source of Metairie, Louisiana, handled sound reinforcement for two of the Festival’s stages. Tim Kilbride, owner and lead audio engineer for The Sound Source, found that HARMAN’s JBL VERTEC® VT4886 subcompact line array elements were ideal for the event.

For each of the two stages, The Sound Source deployed five JBL VT4886 loudspeakers per side, with VRX932LA Constant Curvature Series loudspeakers for front fills and outfills, as well as SRX712M speakers for stage monitors.

“This is our third year using VERTEC loudspeakers at Jazz Fest,” noted Kilbride. “We’ve been extremely happy with their performance. The quality of the sound VERTEC produces is extremely accurate.”

“In fact, the VERTEC arrays provided exceptional sound even under less-than-ideal circumstances,” continued Kilbride. “The Lagniappe Stage, one of the stages where we worked, is in a very non-acoustical-friendly area, and the PA also shoots directly into a large tent that is located about 40 feet from the front edge of the stage. Ordinarily, this would be a sonic nightmare, but we were able to supplement the main system with some VRX cabinets on a delay line at the front inside edge of the tent, which greatly improved intelligibility. We also used additional SRX712M speakers as outfills for the outer seating areas, which further improved the sound.”

In addition to JBL loudspeakers, The Sound Source used Soundcraft Vi1 and Si Compact digital mixing consoles, BSS Audio FCS-960 equalizers and dbx 160A compressor/limiters.

“Outside of Jazz Fest, we’ve also produced events of more than 7,500 people using our JBL VERTEC VT4887ADP powered line array elements,” Kilbride added. “The vocal clarity of all the VERTEC models we’ve used is very impressive. Their ease of setup and use is also very appealing to our techs. The opportunity to generate additional revenue supporting other VERTEC users by supplying additional units has been a real plus as well.”

“Overall the Festival was a big success,” Kilbride concluded. “This year’s Festival had an estimated 400,000 people show up for the 7-day event.”

For Veteran Music and Broadcast Mixer Michael Abbott, "The Talk" Is All About HARMAN’s Studer Vista 8 Digital Live Production Console

LOS ANGELES, California – Can you have a personal relationship with a digital mixing console? Michael Abbott seems to believe so. Abbott, who has provided audio engineering for iconic shows including the finale of “Survivor,” “The Voice” and “X Factor,” as well as the annual Grammy and CMA Music awards broadcasts, and has been entrusted to mix the audio for several critical American Presidential debate broadcasts, has been close to HARMAN’s Studer Vista 8 Digital Live Production Console since its introduction six years ago. Currently, he has been working with the Studer Vista 8 on “The Talk,” a hit on the CBS Daytime lineup featuring Sara Gilbert, Julie Chen, Leah Remini, Holly Robinson Peete, and Sharon Osbourne discussing the day's latest headlines. "I've been fortunate in my career to have worked with many different kinds of Audio platforms," says Abbott, "but nothing has ever come close to what I can accomplish on the Vista 8."

Produced and mixed at CBS's Bradford stage in Los Angeles, The Talk is a fast-paced daily program whose audio includes dialog, live and prerecorded music, audience and ambience effects, live feeds from other studios and remote inputs from around the world. It is, in short, the kind of show that only the Vista 8 can easily manage, thanks to Studer's patented Vistonics™ intuitive user interface.

"On 'The Talk' I have 96 microphones, consisting of more than 20 RF handheld and lavalier microphones, 56 channels of music instrumentation, and audience reaction microphones. In addition, we have the occasional satellite remotes—'The Talk' covered the Royal Wedding a few weeks ago -- celebrity phone-in, eight channels of playout from the Grass Valley K2 and many other audio sources all coming into the mix," says Abbott. "The Vistonics interface allows me to manage them all reliably." Abbott has very specific ways he wants the shows he mixes laid out on the console, and the Vista 8 is more than capable of meeting that with precision. He lines up the K2 outputs and the live microphones across the first of the Vista 8's six virtual work surface layers; layer 2 has the show's live music ready to roll; the third layer is reserved for utility sources such as CD players, feeds from a remote voice-over room and the fiber-optic link to the show's post production room; layer four holds 19 mono and 8 stereo auxiliary inputs such as feeds to the house sound mix position and the dialog mix to the IFB; the fifth and six layers offer additional live music inputs and live audience.

Abbott's hierarchy allows him to have the most active input sources available to him immediately and other sources set as scenes that he can access instantly as needed. "In a 30-fader bucket I have 180 channels at my disposal, and the Vistonics lets me move around the console just as I need to, instead of having to jump around," he says. "I can set up a mix in half the time it used to take me on analog, and that improves my working performance for my clients because it gives me the time to focus on other aspects of the mix, instead of focusing on managing it." Another way the Vista 8 makes Abbott's job easier and the shows he mixes better is the console's ability to do latency compensation at the sample-rate level. "I use outboard processing on some of the microphones on the show but not on others, and with processing comes latency," Abbott explains. "The Vista 8's delay functionality has sample-level resolution, rather than the millisecond level that you usually find. I can't get that level of functionality on other consoles."

As much as Abbott likes the way the Vista 8 performs, he's also a fan of the fact that the Vista 8 is more than a product -- it's a platform that is both advanced and comprehensive and continues to follow an evolutionary path forward. "The Vista 8 is as state-of-the-art as anything out there, and as the industry moves towards commonality of platforms -- being able to use the same platforms for broadcast and live sound, for instance -- Studer has come the furthest in terms of getting the console applied to all the different disciplines you need a digital console for," he says. But at the end of the day, Abbott, for whom mixing music remains a passion, reserves his highest accolade of the Vista 8 for its sound. "I like the tone, the absolute richness of the sound of the Vista 8," he says. "The first day I opened up the faders on 'The Talk' and I thought, Wow, this really sounds great. The dynamics react as I like them to and the EQ is absolutely responsive. I could get used to this."

Daktronics Refurbishes University of Missouri Football Stadium Sound with Complete HARMAN JBL VLA Loudspeaker System

NORTHRIDGE, California – Specializing in supplying and installing superior sound equipment throughout large athletic venues, worldwide A/V integrator Daktronics upgraded the sound system in the 68,349-seat Memorial Stadium/Faurot Field, home of the University of Missouri Tigers football team. Utilizing a HARMAN JBL VLA end zone loudspeaker solution wrapped around the Tigers’ new scoreboard, consulted by Dallas, Texas-based Wrightson, Johnson, Haddon & Williams, Daktronics completely and evenly covered the famed 85-year-old stadium for the enjoyment of all “Mizzou” fans.

“The JBL VLA speakers’ 60-degree horizontal reach allowed us to attain very uniform sound throughout the sunken stadium,” stated Doug Dodge of Daktronics. “In our experience, they are the only speaker line out there designed to look and sound like a line array, but actually allow for complete side fill with only one rig.”

The scoreboard was fitted with 28 VLA601H-WRC in four arrays and augmented by three PD743-WRC loudspeakers. Through an existing fiber-optic infrastructure, Daktronics connected the system utilizing HARMAN’s HiQnet System Architect™ and BSS London processing.

“We were impressed with how painless it was to install such a great, contemporary system in this large, outdoor, older stadium,” continued Dodge. “It’s a real business advantage to exceed clients’ expectations when using the JBL equipment.”

New Ground Entertainment Gears Up With HARMAN’s JBL LSR2300 Series Studio Monitors And MSC1 Monitor System Controller

ATLANTA, Georgia – Record label New Ground Entertainment purchased eight JBL LSR2325P 5-inch powered studio monitors, four JBL LSR2310SP powered studio subwoofers and MSC1 Monitor System Controllers for its headquarters in Atlanta. The systems were installed in four rooms at New Ground Entertainment—two writers’ rooms and two production rooms, one of which doubles as a mix room.

New Ground Entertainment was founded by 25-year industry veteran Ryck “Bigboy” Carter, a premier Atlanta based bassist that has worked with such industry greats as: Quincy Jones and the Montreux jazz festival, Babyface, Lou Rawls, Andre Fisher, Jermaine Dupri and So So Def, Gospel Music Grammy Recording Artist Shirley Caesar, Angella Christie, T.D Jakes, Screenwriter/Director Tyler Perry and many more. Additionally, you can see Carter in the movie “The Preachers Wife” with Whitney Houston and Denzel Washington. Carter and partners started New Ground producing tracks for various Artists and signing record producers and songwriters.

While the LSR2325P monitors caught Carter’s eyes and ears, the LSR2310SP subwoofer’s capabilities made the addition of subs for the four systems an easy decision. “My initial intent was to just by the LSR2325P monitors, but then I listened to the sub and there was no way I was going to buy the tops without the sub,” Carter said. “This sub is half the cost of the subs we had before and it seems so much punchier. So I bought an entire system.”

According to Carter, the accompanying MSC1 Monitor System Controller brings extra performance the package. “The MSC1 controller just makes the whole system perfect,” he said. Using the MSC1’s RMC room mode calibration system “The mids got nice and it became very flat in the room, which is unusual because usually you have to tune according to the speakers. In other words, you have to put the room together to fit the speakers, but in this case it’s the other way around. The speakers fit any room—that’s very unique.”

The Shalleck Collaborative and BBI Engineering Renovate San Jose Civic Auditorium With HARMAN JBL Loudspeaker Solution

NORTHRIDGE, California – To replace an outdated system, San Francisco, California-based The Shalleck Collaborative, Inc. recently designed a HARMAN audio reinforcement system for the San Jose Civic Auditorium in northern California. Local AV contractor BBI Engineering provided installation services. Until the recent $13 million renovation, the city-owned hall relied on expensive outside equipment rentals to service shows and special events. Decision makers now visualize a more profitable way to generate income with its own PA system throughout the 3,001-seat arena.

The Shalleck Collaborative focused its efforts on filling the 15,000-square-foot area of the venue as well as the balcony above. Installed at the main stage in the San Jose Civic Auditorium are 16 JBL VERTEC® VT4888 midsize line array elements, hung eight to each side of the stage, with eight VT4880A fullsize arrayable subwoofers, four to each side, with 10 VP7212 loudspeakers for side fill and four VRX932LAP loudspeakers for front fill. The system includes BSS Soundweb BLU-120 and 160 processing with a Soundcraft Vi6 digital console.

Since the audio system installation, the San Jose Civic Auditorium has hosted concerts by Crosby, Stills and Nash, Steely Dan and productions of “Disney On Ice,” with more scheduled for the 2011 season and beyond.

Ian Hunter, senior consultant for The Shalleck Collaborative, faced the challenge of modernizing and retrofitting the Auditorium while having a minimum impact on the historic landmark’s original structure. The building is recognized as a designated City Landmark, so it was important that historical workers and engineers worked in collaboration to establish rigging points in the ceiling without compromising the delicate structure.

“The HARMAN equipment brings a big sound to this venue that supports all events from local plays to big-name bands,” stated Hunter. “The entire installation turned out very nicely and has received great reviews from city administrators, fans and artists themselves. We are happy that our relationship with the Civic Auditorium put us in a position to design and install a system that allows the venue to attract great performances and continue providing great service to San Jose.”

Studer Boosts Swiss TV’s Pioneering Trimedial Zambo

ZURICH, Switzerland - Broadcasting since August 2010 on Swiss television (SF) and radio (SR DRS), Zambo is a multimedia world for children, aged between seven and 13, in German-speaking Switzerland. In the programme viewers are taken on a trimedial discovery trip – via television, radio and online.

With the creation of the Studio 30 on the Brunnenhofstrasse in Zurich, the technical pioneers of Swiss Radio and Television (SRF) now have an infrastructure that is unparalleled — with a Studer OnAir 3000 mixing console at its core.

Situated in the old building of a large complex of radio studios, the technical requirements of the installation provided an almost insurmountable challenge for even the most accomplished specialists — since Zambo is broadcast both on SF2 and DRS 1 — as well as the Internet!

For installation project manager Thomas Wochner from broadcast service provider TPC, this ‘trimedial’ task meant that new technology would be required in abundance, with the ability to combine workflows for production, studio direction and editing purposes.

To accomplish this, a self-operated broadcast system was specified, which handles not only the daily Zambo radio programme, but also remotely-controlled cameras and automated web content feed.

Since it was also a requirement to keep the workflows streamlined, the central audio-mixing console needed to be operated as simply and intuitively as possible. The programme staff themselves perform many technical procedures, such as shooting and cutting, and the editors plan the content, cut the film, and edit the material.

The production workflow is file-based. The innovative output control allows both the playout of pre-produced material as well as live footage. The studio cameras are controlled from the radio broadcast control room, making possible live audio-visual streaming to the Internet during the radio broadcast.

Not least because of the high requirements for automation and user ergonomics TPC chose a Studer OnAir 3000 mixing system for use in both studio and control room. The central SCore drives 42 faders — 24 for camera direction and 18 in the self-op studio.

In addition to the SCore engine, there are two further sets of Studer I/O Frames, one in the central engine room and the other one in a local studio rack. The Studer Call Management System (CMS) and a DigaSystem Broadcast system have been carefully integrated; for call-ins and telephony infrastructure the Zambo studio infrastructure is networked to the central CMS at Brunnenhofstrasse, which is hub for all SRF’s radio programmes.

All equipment was supplied by Dr.W.A.Günther Audio Systems AG, the territorial Harman Professional distributor.

JBL VERTEC® Line Arrays and Control® Contractor Loudspeakers Deliver Musical Excitement for American Idol’s 2011 Season

NORTHRIDGE, California – American Idol is the country’s most-watched TV series, and has been the number one show for six years in a row, thanks to its blend of stars in the making, audience participation and the often-unpredictable reactions of celebrity judges Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler. For American Idol’s 2011 season, wrapping up this week, the main house PA and dialogue system has included a total of 300 JBL Professional loudspeakers, including VERTEC® line arrays and Control® Contractor loudspeakers, ensuring the contestants and judges are clearly heard no matter how loudly the audience cheers the performers.

The system has been installed in Stage 36 at CBS Television City in Hollywood. The main system has included 20 JBL VERTEC VT4889 fullsize line array elements, and the dialogue system has comprised 275 JBL Control 25 loudspeakers. The system was designed and installed by Patrick Baltzell and ATK/Audiotek of Valencia, California.

“The look of the set is a big part of the show, so the audio system could not be visually intrusive,” noted Baltzell. “We needed speakers that could provide full-range response all in one box, without having to use separate subwoofers or high-frequency elements, because we needed to use as few boxes as possible.” The VT4889 line array elements have been set up in two main groups of 10 speakers each, in locations selected to deliver even sound coverage to all 620 members of the studio audience. For the dialogue system, a compact Control 25 speaker (measuring only 9.3 x 7.4 x 5.8 inches) was placed underneath every other seat in the audience.

“We needed a distributed audio system in addition to the main music system because during a broadcast there are sometimes up to 12 or 15 lavalier microphones open and in use at the same time,” noted Baltzell. “We don’t want to mix all of those through the main PA system. With the separate dialogue system, it’s much easier to work with all those lavalier mics, and achieve better, more articulate sound for the audience.”

Baltzell added, “Although it’s a music competition, there’s a ton of dialogue going on between the judges and contestants. On some shows, there’s actually more dialogue than musical performances, so the dialogue support system is just as important as the main house PA.”

The series’ 2-night grand finale will be staged in Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre L.A. Live on May 24-25 in front of a theater audience of over 7,000, as well as being broadcast on FOX to millions of viewers watching at home.

HARMAN Soundcraft Vi6™ Impresses at the Donaufestival

KREMS, Austria — The Donaufestival is an Austrian festival of music and performance that takes place each April on the River Danube in Krems, in the state of Lower Austria.

Promoted by the NOE Festival-Ges for the past two decades, the festival showcases a wide range of artistry — from avant-garde rock, performance art and electronica.

This year for the first time the production brought in the Soundworx team of audio engineers, with Klaus Hübner on monitors, and Michael Schmidt given the task of piloting the house mix through a Soundcraft Vi6 — supplied by Redline Enterprise — over two weekends.

The FOH engineer, who had specifically requested the Vi6 after being introduced to the desk at the Prolight+Sound Show in Frankfurt, was gratified that so many visiting artists’ sound engineers also specified the desk on their riders.

With a multiple-act show occupying three stages — including a gothic church, as well as several small locations spread throughout the town — the Vi6, running up to 96 channels, was configured with two MADI cards in the local rack for additional connectivity.

The OB Van (containing a Studer Vista 8) also received signals from an active analogue split onstage — a stereo sum and FX sum from the Vi Stagebox (configured 64 in / 32 out).

Although Michael Schmidt has worked the festival for several years as a sound tech, this was his first outing in charge of the house mix — and he stressed the importance of having a high-calibre sound engineer down in Monitor City. “A very important aspect with ‘hot’ inputs — with a high tendency to generate feedback — is that you can rely on each other,” he said.

“Many bands came with their own sound engineers, but I had the fortune to mix some on my own, like the Irrepressibles, Lydia Lunch, Gonjasufi, Laurie Anderson and others.” The Wild Beasts’ engineer came with a show file created on a Soundcraft’s Vi1 and John Cale’s technician brought a session that was created on Soundcraft’s Offline Editor.” The number of inputs varied from 48 (in the case of John Cale) down to just three for Laurie Anderson.

Michael Schmidt says it never took him longer than five minutes to familiarise new Vi6 users with the environment. “As a general rule I create a specific user layer the way the band engineer wants it — that makes life much easier, especially for an engineer with no Vi experience.

“I remember the old analogue days at festivals with up to nine bands per day, where you had to convince a lot of band engineers to go for a generic patch,” he continued. “Now it is a real pleasure to offer them a 1:1 patch to the band’s input list.”

While some bands had ordered an analogue graphic EQ, they did not use it once they had tested the board’s dynamics. “I had even considered using my own tube preamps, and was happy afterwards I did not have to carry this extra weight back home again. Definitely a good time now to sell them!”

However, some engineers used an interesting mix of both external and inline FX. “For instance the Irrepressibles had their own FX engineer who received several sends from the local rack into his FX rack, and returned a sum to my band mix. I used the internal FX for backing vocals, drums, strings, wind instruments, acoustic guitar and vibraphone!”

The Soundworx man found himself using all the desk’s internal dynamics, — Gates, De-essers, Compressors and even Limiters (for bands with less stage experience). “The original Laurie Anderson input list comprised more input channels than she sent me from stage in the end, so I had to deal with a stereo sum including all her vocals, violin, vocal effects and additional effects — which made it a little difficult in terms of feedback suppression and using additional reverb.”

Summarising the console’s attributes, he pointed to the obvious sonic quality and ease of use — and the fact that it provided the best overview (with all dynamics, inputs and outputs at a glance). “Other plus points were the Lexicon FX, the compact dimensions and the fact there is no more layer confusion — thanks to FaderGlow™. Also, two engineers can work on the desk at the same time (via the fourth flexible input bay).”

Michael Schmidt remains unequivocal that the Vi6 is his favourite desk. “I have been using Vi6’s now for two years — but only for monitor purposes until now,” he summarised. “This was my first opportunity to get in deep at FOH, and it did not take more than an hour to establish my basic festival set-up and answer all relevant questions to myself due to the self explanatory surface and software.

“In fact this festival reinforced the decision that Soundworx will definitely invest in a Vi Series console during 2011!”

Audiopole Specifies HARMAN’s Studer Routing Matrix For Improved Workflow, As Arte Upgrades To HD

STRASBOURG, France - Arte, the French/German TV network, has upgraded the facilities at its Strasbourg HQ with a major HARMAN Studer routing solution, supplied by Audiopole, Studer’s French distributors.

The network’s channel requirements are substantial because, since Arte is an international joint venture, programs cater technically for audiences from both countries. This requires double titling, opposite language subtitling or dubbing, with hosts speaking both languages alternately and generally two separate stereo feeds (available through DVB-T, satellite television and digital cable).

Arte began transmission in 1992 as a multi cultural European channel and is now broadcasting 24/7 to France, Germany and the rest of Europe. Audiopole’s Jean-Philippe Blanchard has supported the station’s news and production studios with product since the sale of two Studer Vista 6 consoles a couple of years ago.

When Arte decided 12 months ago to launch a tender to renew the technical infrastructure, including video and HD, one of the decisions they needed to make was whether to retain the two Vista 6’s.

After deliberation, they opted to keep the desks, using the Studer RELINK Resource Linking I/O Sharing facility, and replace their small AES router with a much larger Studer matrix, to increase workflow in the tapeless HD environment.

The tender was won by Luxembourg-based Broadcasting Center Europe (BCE) the engineering division of the parent CLT Group.

Since the network wanted to be able to work with a 16-channel 3G-SDI card. Audiopole included these cards in the router package and quoted console upgrades to add 5.1 channels features.

SDI audio embedding and de-embedding has been an integral part of Studer consoles for several years, and the company added a high-bandwidth version of SDI to its optional D21m I/O module with the recent release of the 3G SDI card. The new option can handle up to 16 audio channels in an SDI stream, acting as an eight- or 16-channel embedder, an eight- or 16-channel de-embedder, or any combination thereof.

The new card interfaces with all SDI standards from SD, HD to 3G, with on-board sample-rate converters providing a method for the audio streams to be processed independently of the SDI video sync. The card directly injects the de-embedded audio into the console bus structure, removing the D/A converter- or AES3 Interface stage, which would be required with standalone SDI equipment.

Blanchard confirms the new system uses 52 of the 3G-SDI cards in a routing matrix of around 1600 x 1600 inputs and outputs.

“Having an integral card means less weight, less rack space, and less cost, since these option cards fit into the existing D21m I/O system racks,” he says. “The network is delighted with the economy.”

With the requirement for multi language and stereo environments — for both the French and German broadcasts — the fit-out had been quite complex. “It had required us to spend a lot of time on site — but we have delivered a substantial Studer routing system,” says the Audiopole’s Broadcast Division Director. “Arte can now have access to all the broadcast facilities and share the microphones using RELINK.”

The Studer solution forms the hub of BCE’s new upgrade, transitioning existing studios and the playout, including two control rooms with stereo multilingual capability and HD/SD simulcast.

HARMAN’s AKG Microphones And JBL Studio Monitors Drive The Lonely Island’s Star-Studded Sophomore Album Turtleneck & Chain

VIENNA, Austria – With hundreds of millions of combined YouTube views for their signature celebrity-cameo, satire-laced singles, The Lonely Island’s latest album, Turtleneck & Chain comes to life with the help of HARMAN’s AKG mics and JBL studio monitors. Whether recording demo tracks in the Saturday Night Live studio offices or providing additional overdubs to the tracks and mixing at New York City’s Downtown Music Studios, AKG C 414’s and JBL LSR6300 series studio monitors were on hand throughout the entire process. Akiva Schaffer, Jorma Taccone and Andy Samberg - “The Dudes” of The Lonely Island - offer 19 new tracks and skits featuring Michael Bolton, Akon, Snoop Dogg, Niki Minaj, Rhianna, Beck, Santigold and Justin Timberlake on their latest album, now available.

Selected to mix the entire Turtleneck & Chain album, GRAMMY® Award-winning engineer Jason Goldstein utilized an AKG C 414 XLS for vocal overdubs on the original recorded demos The Lonely Island provided for mix, which were also recorded on Samberg’s personal C 414. Although the tracks are humorous in nature, The Lonely Island team is meticulous in ensuring their songs are assembled to deliver punch lines perfectly.

“We mixed the songs as if they were truly jokes - meant to be understood the first time they were heard - so it was important each one-liner, each syllable, however quick or random, was perfectly delivered and audible the first time you listen,” said Goldstein. “You don’t want to be listening to the song while asking yourself ‘what was that joke again?’ The quality demo tracks the group recorded on their C 414, along with our recordings on the C 414 and mixing on the LSR’s, help us put together a great-sounding record, where the joke would be clearly and easily understood. The final mix emphasises the superior quality of the C 414.”

While mixing, Goldstein continues to rely on the JBL LSR6300 series studio monitors. Schaffer, Taccone and Samberg knew what Goldstein could bring to a track after listening to his previous work, so The Lonely Island, who are very emotionally attached and involved in their music, trusted their recordings to be of the same quality. With their own headphones and a monitoring system short of a professional audio setup, the group was pleased to hear their final work played back out of the LSR’s. Goldstein’s monitors brought a reference of quality to each track that would not only sound perfect during studio playback, but through any means of listening from laptops, YouTube and MP3 players to mobile phones and digital shorts on Saturday Night Live.

“The LSR’s are my go-to reference as they provide the high-quality playback we need to ensure the best service to our clients,” continued Goldstein. “If it sounds great out of the LSR’s, it will sound great anywhere. The AKG mics also provide a consistency and quality needed for a high-energy record such as this.”

AKG C 414’s can be seen in The Lonely Island’s latest SNL Digital Short, Jack Sparrow, featuring Michael Bolton.
