ESCO Communications Enhances Expo Center at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum With HARMAN JBL Loudspeaker System

From serving as a standard convention hall to hosting concerts and events as extreme as midget car races, the Expo Center at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Indiana, relied on ESCO Communications to install a sound system to easily accommodate sound requirements for the immense variety of events at the venue. Designed by Kansas-City based Acoustical Design Group (ADG), the system at the 108,000-square-foot Expo Center features a wealth of JBL VP Series loudspeakers.

Working to design an impactful sound system, ADG had to ensure the entire hall, as well as each individual section, would perform flawlessly. An assortment of 116 JBL VP7215 powered loudspeakers are suspended from the ceiling and fed via a Soundweb London system consisting of BLU-160 and BLU-120 processors.

“We wanted a system that could offer traditional conventions and tradeshows perfect sound and also cater to the unique events the center books throughout the year,” stated Ian Wolfe, Vice President of ADG. “The JBL loudspeakers were the best solution to match our recommendations for the renovations. The price and performance of the powered speaker line, combined with the high-caliber quality of the BSS equipment contributed to a completely successful install and solution.”

The JBL system replaces the entire original speaker system in the halls, utilizing the same locations to blend with the lighting elements. “The loudspeakers allowed us to keep the same visual aspects as before, but offer a completely new and improved system,” continued Wolfe.

While discussing multiple solutions for the Center, passive loudspeaker systems were considered. However, ADG recommended a powered system to provide the best performance for any show or convention in the space. “Not only does the JBL equipment provide great sound for all events, the JBL team was very helpful in ensuring ADG and ESCO finely tuned the system for the perfect fit,” said Wolfe.

JBL LSR Series Studio Monitors Are Designed to Deliver Accurate, High-Resolution Sound In Less-Than-Ideal Broadcast Environments

In an ideal world, broadcast control rooms would have perfect acoustics. In the real world, however, production rooms in facilities and trucks have acoustic irregularities, especially when it comes to bass behavior. JBL LSR Series studio monitors are designed to give more accurate performance in problematic rooms. LSR models incorporate technologies including JBL’s exclusive RMC™ Room Mode Correction to deliver smoother, flatter frequency response and enable greater accuracy and better mixes in any workspace.

JBL offers a complete line of LSR6300, LSR4300 and LSR2300 Series studio monitors and subwoofers, along with the MSC1 Monitor System Controller that offers features found in the monitor sections of professional mixing consoles, and tunes any speakers for greater accuracy in problematic rooms. JBL LSR Series loudspeakers and the MSC1 are on exhibit at NAB 2011 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Booth C2619, Las Vegas, Nevada (April 11 – 14, 2011).

At the mix position, as great as 60% of the mid and high frequency sound is reflected sound. LSR Linear Spatial Reference design ensures not just the direct sound from the speaker, but the speaker’s off-axis reflected sound, is neutral for greater mid and high frequency accuracy at the mix position in a broad range of acoustic environments.

A second technology, JBL RMC™ tackles the room’s low frequency problems. In production control rooms, variations in low frequency response caused by room modes and speaker placement can produce exaggerated bass response that can mislead audio engineers. JBL’s RMC Room Mode Correction technology compensates for low frequency irregularities with a system that measures the room’s frequency response and applies corrective filters. All three JBL studio monitor lines offer an RMC solution. While the JBL LSR4300 series and two of the LSR6300 series models include RMC technology in the speaker, JBL’s MSC1 Monitor System Controller with RMC technology can be used with the affordable LSR2300 series studio monitors or any speaker system.

Leading Technologies SRL Equips Radio Toscana With Second HARMAN Studer OnAir 2500

Radio Toscana, the Adult Contemporary regional music station, has taken delivery of a second HARMAN Studer OnAir 2500 digital console. The order for the all-in-one desk was placed with Leading Technologies SRL (formerly A&DT/APG), who has worked closely with the Florence-based station (which looks out at the famous Duomo) over the past decade.

The network, which already boasts Soundcraft RM105 and Series 15 desks, carried out a studio upgrade in 2009 with the conversion to complete digital transmission carried out by studio concept specialists, Acoustic Design. As part of that fit-out Radio Toscana purchased its first OnAir 2500, but with the recent building of a second dedicated room, an additional 12-fader OnAir 2500 was installed.

“The first time around Radio Toscana evaluated the console for quality — and also for distributor support,” explained Leading Technologies’ sales specialist, Fiore Confuorto. “They really liked the all-in-one and compact structure of the OnAir 2500, the excellent quality of the desk and general features. The second time around the decision was automatic. Radio Toscana are very good clients who love our product and are completely satisfied with the support they receive from Leading Technologies.”

Designed for ease of use, the OnAir 2500 utilizes software technology derived from the OnAir 3000 console while building on the operational concepts of its successful predecessor, the OnAir 2000. Totally self-contained, the control surface, I/O breakout, DSP Core and power supply are all integrated within a single compact chassis.

The fader strips include a graphical OLED screen, providing a much wider viewing angle than LCDs and greater definition, while the large TFT color touch screen uses Studer’s patented Touch’n’Action system, where only the most important functions have hardware control elements in the channel strip — making the operation of the console very simple and stress-free.

Highly flexible, the OnAir 2500 provides the user with a large number of inputs and outputs in many standard signal formats and comes in three standard configurations.

Signal feeds are brought into Radio Toscana by Sonifex digital telephone hybrid, supported by Mayah ISDN, IP, UMTS protocol codec for external live transmission.

The latest OnAir 2500 will be used for recording and post production while doubling as a back-up desk — and if necessary it will be used for other broadcast transmission. Full technical support for the consoles will be provided by Leading Technologies.

Radio Toscana technical chief, Jonathan Mensi states, “The OnAir 2500 is very user-friendly and simple to operate. In particular I like the flexible routing structure and the ability to save different surface and I/O configurations. It's almost like I have multiple mixing systems available to me.”

Part of the InBlu Catholic radio syndication network, which has around 200 members, the radio station also has local bases throughout the Tuscany region.

The two OnAir 2500’s will maintain consistent workflow and help the station continue to serve up a rich mix of adult news and entertainment through the region.

HARMAN Showcases JBL Professional VERTEC® Subcompact Suspension Accessories at Prolight & Sound 2011

At Prolight & Sound 2011, HARMAN is introducing JBL Professional’s latest suspension hardware accessories for its VERTEC® subcompact line arrays.  The VERTEC hardware enables quick assembly of variable curvature vertical or modular constant-curvature horizontal line arrays. In addition to the standard VT4886-AF array frame for suspending up to 24 boxes, along with the VT4886-UB and –UB1 for supporting smaller groups of speakers, the line of equipment now includes the VT4886-SF Short Frame, the VT4886-HB Horizontal Bar, and VT4886-DF88 and VT4886-DF89 Downfill Frames.

The VERTEC Subcompact System is specifically designed to be one of the most versatile tools in a portable sound rental company’s inventory. Application flexibility also ensures VT4886 and VT4883 elements provide effective sound design tools for performance audio facility system designers.

“Since its launch a year ago, the VT4886 has quickly become known as an all-purpose type of loudspeaker with many different uses, from single standalone fill speakers to complex, mixed full-range and subwoofer arrays,” said Paul Bauman, Director of Tour Sound Product and Application Engineering, JBL Professional. “The introduction of these new suspension accessories will complement this speaker’s flexibility by opening up a world of new application possibilities from a sound design perspective. In many ways, the accessories ‘make the product’ for a loudspeaker as versatile as the VT4886.”

“The new suspension frames add a great deal of flexibility to these loudspeakers for system designers,” observed Eric Stahlhammer, a USA-based independent sound designer who frequently uses line array system for theatrical productions and corporate events worldwide. “I recently did a 6-box center array of VT4886’s using the new VT4886-HB. This let me easily plan and then execute a focused, overhead sound source in exactly the right position, to support presenters onstage at a global business conference.”

The VT4886-SF Short Frame suspends VT4886 arrays by coupling to existing integrated hardware on the VERTEC enclosures, and works well when limited space is available above or behind the array due to wall surfaces or venue obstructions. Weighing just 5.6 kg (12.8 lb), the machined- aluminum frame with receiver blocks is fitted with steel quick-release pins and restraining lanyards. A pullback point enables attachment to the bottom of an array to enable radical downward angles. The VT4886-HB Horizontal Bar can suspend up to six horizontally-oriented VT4886 line array elements, enabling the assembly of constant-coverage arrays that are useful for center fill and other applications.

The VT4886-DF88 and VT4886-DF89 Downfill Frames each support up to eight VT4886 subcompact line array elements. The VT4886-DF88 connects the elements beneath midsize VT4888 full-range or VT4882 subwoofer arrays, while the VT4886-DF89 suspends the elements beneath full-size VT4889/VT4889-1 full-range or VT4880/VT4880A subwoofer arrays.  The two strong, lightweight downfill frames weigh in at 11.3 kg (25 lb) and 13.4 kg (29.5 lb), respectively.

HARMAN Presents JBL Professional’s Most Impressive EON Loudspeaker Ever At Prolight & Sound 2011: The EON515XT

HARMAN is showing JBL Professional’s EON515XT active loudspeaker at Prolight & Sound 2011, continuing the success of JBL’s flagship product for its iconic powered portable speaker collection. A direct replacement for the EON515, the EON515XT was engineered for durability, high performance and ease of use. The new EON515XT offers increased input sensitivity, a lowering noise floor than its predecessor, and user selectable EQ. The entire system has been optimized for peak performance and enhanced audio precision.

“In the development of our PRX600 Series we’ve learned and implemented quite a few things that enhanced system performance,” said Richard Ruse, JBL Director of Marketing for Portable PA. “We knew we could do the same for the EON515XT and quite frankly, we couldn’t wait to do it. Through amplifier optimization and restructuring of the gain stages, we’ve increased the maximum SPL from 129 dB to 132 dB. We’ve made the system quieter when idling and re-voiced the system for a more even spectral balance. I think it’s the most musical EON we have ever built.”

The 2-way EON515XT incorporates a JBL 2414H high-frequency neodymium compression driver and a 15-inch JBL 265F-1 Differential Drive® dual-voice-coil woofer perfectly matched to a proprietary Crown® Class D amplifier. The system has been re-voiced from previous models for better clarity and frequency balance and now delivers a stout 132dB maximum SPL. “We’ve raised the bar dramatically,” noted Ruse.

The input sensitivity has been increased by 10dB to accommodate keyboards, musical instruments, drum machines and lower output sound reinforcement and DJ mixers. The EON515XT now offers user-adjustable EQ with individual bass and treble controls and a simplified 3-channel mixer configuration—an especially beneficial live performance feature that allows users to plug in multiple instruments and microphones.

Built to take the rigors of the road, the JBL EON515XT has been restyled for discretion with a tough, molded black enclosure, black metal grille, black JBL badge, and charcoal EON grille logo. The EON515XT can be pole-mounted on a subwoofer or tripod stand using its 36 mm pole-mount socket, used in a floor monitor position or flown using its integrated M10 suspension points. It offers two 1/4-inch TRS inputs, one combination XLR/TRS input and an XLR loop-through output for connecting another EON speaker, recording device or for routing to an external device. Weighing just 32.5 pounds, the EON515XT features multiple grip points designed for comfort, safety and balance.

At a total weight of just 33 pounds, the EON210P is 20 pounds lighter than most other package PA systems in its class.

The EON210P can accommodate multiple microphones, instruments, portable music players and other audio sources. Channels 1–4 include XLR/1/4-inch combination connectors, individual Bass and Treble controls and an effect send, channels 5-6 have a pair of 1/4-inch stereo and a pair of stereo RCA jacks, and channels 7–8 have a 3.5mm stereo jack. The mixer also features a 30V phantom power supply for use with condenser microphones, 1/4-inch TRS and RCA stereo output jacks for connection to recording devices or for external routing, in addition to a dedicated 3.5mm headphone jack.

Although compact, the EON210P packs plenty of sonic punch, thanks to its 300-watt-peak stereo amplifier and high-efficiency 2-way speakers, each with a 1.5-inch neodymium compression-driver tweeter and 10-inch high-excursion woofer. The EON210P can deliver 124dB peak system output and each speaker provides smooth, even coverage over a 100º x 60º listening area. The EON210P’s speakers can be placed on a floor or table, or pole-mounted using the speakers’ 36mm pole-mount socket.

HARMAN’S Soundcraft and AKG Combine to Make Wireless Mic Monitoring in the Mixer a First

Every engineer has been there. The radio mics check out fine on the RF Tech’s laptop, but that’s before the talent walks onto the stage. Reception black spots, drained batteries, accidental mutes--anything can happen once the show gets underway.

Thankfully, HARMAN’s Soundcraft and AKG now make the FOH engineer’s life easier. Now it’s possible for the first time to monitor the status of any HARMAN HiQnet™-compatible AKG radio mic directly from the Soundcraft Vi Series console surface, courtesy of VM2 (Vistonics Microphone Monitoring). VM2 provides real-time visual displays of battery life, RF status, mic muting and internal clipping directly on a channel strip on the Vistonics™ screen, so it’s possible to see a problem long before you hear it, right there on the relevant channel--with expanded information instantly available just by touching the screen.

System configuration couldn’t be more straightforward, and uses Harman’s proprietary HiQnet network--simply plug in the mics, patch them to the related console channels, and you’re done. You can even identify the relevant mic receiver in the rack by pressing the Locate button, causing the receiver front panel display to flash.

It all adds up to much more efficient workflow and one less thing for the hard-pressed engineer to worry about.

VM2 will be available for all Soundcraft Vi Series consoles in V4.5 software, including Vi1, Vi2, Vi4 and Vi6.

Compatible AKG Wireless mic systems are WMS 4000, WMS 4500 and DMS 700 (optional HUB 4000Q HiQnet Ethernet interface required).

SOUND.COM Fields Massive HARMAN JBL VERTEC® Line Array System For National Games in India

After successfully executing the audio for the Commonwealth Games 2010 in Delhi, large event speciality firm SOUND.COM was contracted to provide the live audio systems for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies at the 34th Indian National Games at the Ranchi Stadium in Jharkhand. Working with event production house Core Networks and live production company Cineyug Group, SOUND.COM delivered an advanced audio solution based around HARMAN JBL VERTEC® line arrays and Soundcraft digital mixing consoles.

The Closing Ceremonies at the Indian National Games included approximately 7,000 athletes marching in front of an audience of nearly 45,000 people. Following an air display, entertainment included Indian musicians, Bollywood stars, a laser show, a fire dance and a special appearance by popular artist Katrina Kaif. There was also a sub-event titled 'Welcome Kerala' — since this will be the location of next year’s event — with over 300 performers from that region performing.

The main PA system at both ceremonies consisted of JBL VERTEC VT4889, VT4888 and VT4887 line array loudspeakers with VT4880 fullsize arrayable subwoofers, powered by Crown I-Tech HD12000 amplifiers.

The primary VERTEC loudspeaker positions each comprised a single VT4880 fullsize subwoofer and either three VT4889 fullsize line array elements or VT4888 midsize line array elements, distributed across the stadium. VIP seating areas featured hangs of six VT4887 compact line array elements with a VT4880 subwoofer accompanying each array. In addition, JBL AC26/28 enclosures were used as fill speakers for podium-area monitoring.

SOUND.COM also fielded a Soundcraft Vi6 digital console, with a monitor node rack receiving audio microphone and line signals from the artists on stage and providing audio outputs to the amplifiers. Ease of use by multiple operators and fiber optic snakes running between the stage and FOH racks made the Vi6 a logical choice for an event such as this, says SOUND.COM, with all microphone signals being split to FOH, Monitors and Broadcast.

“I am very proud at the way our team members executed this project — with veteran engineers like Sunil, Gilroy and Yusuf working in conjunction with newer staff like Jason, Arvind and Dheeraj,” said Warren Dsouza, Managing Director and Founder of SOUND.COM. “They have successfully completed a major audio production while the company was also busy handling other projects at the same time. Our client was more than satisfied with the result.”

Story Sound Takes HARMAN JBL VERTEC® Subcompact Line Arrays on Tour With Royal Netherlands Air Force Orchestra

Netherlands-based Story Sound has embarked on a theater tour with the Royal Netherlands Air Force Orchestra, using a HARMAN JBL VERTEC® subcompact line array system. According to Michael Story, who owns the rental company with his brother Egbert, the system is perfect for the sub-1,000-seat capacity venues the Orchestra will be playing at between February and May to present its themed orchestral music program, “Tribute To Michael Jackson.”

Although the company has worked with JBL loudspeakers for its top-tier client projects for many years, the VERTEC subcompact line arrays had not been released in time for use on last year’s Orchestra tour. However, as soon as the system was available, Michael Story couldn’t wait to use it. “We tested the new VERTEC subcompact line arrays against numerous other systems,” he noted. “They won hands-down due to their power, fidelity and sonic clarity.”

When it came to prepping the Orchestra production, Story Sound designed a scalable system, using a larger configuration at venues such as the Chassé Theater in Breda, where the tour opened. The tour is carrying 32 VT4886 subcompact full-range line array elements and 12 VT4883 subcompact arrayable subwoofers, mounted on multi-box dollies for fast load-in. Michael Story explained, “For most venues we field 12 VT4886 elements per side and ground stack four. But for the larger theaters, such as the Chassé, we increase this to 16 VT4886 elements per side.”

“We have found there is greater dynamic range with the VT4886 compared with other systems we tried, and the clarity in the low end is amazing,” Story continued. “It provides a massive difference, offering very high fidelity and enormous power from a small footprint.”

Meanwhile, Story Sound also evaluated different digital mixing platforms for the tour before selecting Studer Vista 5SR consoles for use by FOH engineer Remko Luijten (and backup Wibo Vermeulen), and the two monitor engineers, Ger Arts and Taco Peut.

“Although the other desks we evaluated were set up for live music, the whole sound team simply prefers the Studer sound—it is just wonderful,” he said.

To accommodate the inputs from a 55-piece brass band, two similar mix environments have been provided for both the FOH and monitor positions. “Both systems are configured with similar DSP and five MADI inputs and sometimes the orchestra rehearses with just a monitor board—so there is no need to build up the whole FOH rack,” Story concluded.

HARMAN HiQnet Performance Manager™ Software Opens New Chapter In Application-Engineered Functionality For Touring and Performance Venue Sound

At Prolight + Sound 2011, HARMAN Professional announced the introduction of its HiQnet Performance Manager™ software, a highly-refined user interface that facilitates the design of touring and live performance venue sound reinforcement systems. Designed especially for touring and theatrical sound engineering, HiQnet Performance Manager is an application-specific iteration of the category-leading HARMAN HiQnet System Architect 2 connectivity and control software application for professional-grade audio system integration.

“In touring, time is money and Performance Manager dramatically streamlines the system design, setup and tuning process, allowing the JBL VerTec® System Engineer to achieve a higher level of performance with more consistent results on a daily basis from venue-to-venue”, explained Paul Bauman, Director of Tour Sound Product Application and Application Engineering, JBL Professional.

HiQnet Performance Manager provides a comprehensive, step-by-step workflow that directly corresponds to real-world system configuration, taking the workflow paradigm introduced in System Architect 2 to a higher level of functionality for any live performance audio application. It is fully integrated with JBL’s Line Array Calculator II loudspeaker configuration and acoustic modeling software. The user begins by loading templates of the speaker arrays used in the system, and then runs Line Array Calculator II for each array as part of the initial sound design task of determining how many and which type of loudspeakers are required to cover a given venue. For each array, Performance Manager automatically loads the passive VerTec or powered VerTec DrivePack® DPDA line array configuration into the main application workspace – the first of many automated design processes native to the software application. Loudspeakers can also be manually loaded into the templates if desired.

Once the user defines the required amplifier parameters for the passive loudspeakers within the arrays, Performance Manager automatically loads the correct number of Crown Audio VRACK or other user-determined amplifier racks into the audio system. The software then associates the amplifier outputs with the bandpass crossover inputs for the selected array and programs the amplifiers with the correct JBL preset data, as well as gain shading and JBL Line Array Control Panel equalization parameters that are determined in JBL’s Line Array Calculator II as part of the modeling process to optimize sound pressure level and frequency response over the defined audience geometry.

“HiQnet Performance Manager greatly simplifies loudspeaker preset management as well as power amplifier networking, grouping, monitoring and control. It is the ideal complement to the Crown Audio® VRACK turnkey power amplifier rack solution for JBL VerTec line array systems and the automated generation of pre-configured control panels combined with a tablet-friendly, highly-intuitive user interface will be a huge timesaver for the touring sound engineer”, added Brian Pickowitz, Market Manager, Crown Audio International.

Representations of the bandpass inputs for each loudspeaker section are overlaid onto the arrays, enabling the user to easily visualize the array configuration, whether JBL DrivePack-powered or driven by external Crown Audio power amplifiers.  Performance Manager software also significantly simplifies system networking configuration – the user can simply drag and drop devices discovered on the network onto the pre-configured devices within the Performance Manager workspace to synchronize all addressing and parameter values.

In addition, the Performance Manager graphical interface provides embedded control panels for array calibration, time alignment and system EQ which utilize input section digital signal processing resources available in either Crown I-Tech HD power amplifiers or JBL DrivePack-powered loudspeakers with DPDA digital audio input modules. Input attenuation, equalization, delay settings and bandpass controls are all readily-accessible directly within the main application workspace along with flexible grouping and comprehensive solo / mute functionality for system testing.

Once system tuning is complete, Performance Manager’s Show Mode display is optimized for the actual live performance offering appropriate adjustment control ballistics for equalization and dedicated monitoring interfaces for levels, speaker loads, thermal conditions and AC power requirements.  The workspace for all stages of Performance Manager’s workflow has a common design motif, with monitoring functions overlaid on top of the same loudspeaker bandpass representations within the workspace, making visualization easier and more consistent across various workflow screens.

HiQnet Performance Manager is ultimately a product of Harman’s ongoing commitment to develop application-specific versions of the HiQnet® platform, addressing the day-to-day tasks of audio professionals in a broad range of markets. “By comprehensive analysis of the workflow of audio professionals in touring applications, HiQnet Performance Manager provides an enhanced productivity tool unlike anything else available,” summarized Adam Holladay, Senior Market Manager, HARMAN Professional System Development and Integration Group.

HiQnet Performance Manager is on exhibit in a dedicated demonstration area at Prolight + Sound 2011 at Exhibition Centre Frankfurt, Location 8.0, F32 (6 – 9 April, 2011).

HARMAN HiQnet® is the world's first connectivity and control protocol that integrates all product categories in the signal chain for professional audio systems of all types, size, and applications. HARMAN HiQnet no longer requires the user to manage multiple disparate operating systems or be responsible for programming individual signal processors, speaker controllers, wireless microphone systems, and mixing consoles. HiQnet was developed by engineers from across Harman’s Professional Division and is coordinated by the System Development and Integration Group (SDIG), a team of dedicated systems specialists based in Salt Lake City, Utah.

HARMAN Hardwire® HT-6 Polyphonic Tuner is Now Shipping

HARMAN’s HardWire, a leading manufacturer of guitar pedals, is now shipping its HT-6 Polyphonic Tuner. The new HT-6 is a tuner for guitarists and bassists that can be used to tune all six strings of an instrument simultaneously.  Based on technology from recently acquired 3dB Research, a music technology company with extensive expertise in music and voice processing, the HT-6 makes tuning instruments faster and easier easy by letting the musician simply strum all the strings at once, and view the ‘string’ display readout to see which strings are in or out of tune.

The HT-6 Polyphonic Tuner is a floor pedal that features six rows of LED indicators, one for each string. The LED display matrix represents the six strings of a guitar or the strings of a bass. Two buttons on the HT-6 Tuner’s top display panel are used for selecting display modes (Mode) and tuning references (Tuning).  The multicolored LEDs provide an easy to see indication of which strings are sharp or flat (red), almost in tune (green) or in tune (blue).

The HT-6 also features individual guitar and bass LEDs that indicate whether the Guitar or Bass display mode is being used. The Custom LED will light when the Drop D tuning reference is selected. In addition, the HT-6 displays the name of the individual note as an individual string is tuned.

The HT-6 can also be used as a standard single string tuner. The HT-6 is powered by a 9-volt DC battery, or an optional external Harman PS200R DC power adapter. The HT-6 can also power up to six other 9VDC powered pedals on a pedal board when used with an optional DC power adapter and a power chain cable.

“The already impressive lineup of HardWire pedals is now even better with the availability of the HT-6 Polyphonic Tuner.  We designed the HT-6 with the goal to make tuning easier and faster than ever and users can now take advantage of this great addition to the HardWire family,” stated Rob Urry, Vice President and General Manager, Harman Signal Processing.
