Hollywood Outdoor Movies Provides Unique Cinema Experience With HARMAN JBL Loudspeakers

Providing the greater Los Angeles area with a unique twist on the late night movie, Hollywood Outdoor Movies (HOM) relies on HARMAN JBL VRX loudspeakers to entertain thousands by displaying feature films on a giant portable outdoor movie screen. With audiences ranging in size from 1,300 to 2,500 people, HOM owner John J. Snyder is using his JBL VRX system to deliver high-impact sound for movie exhibitions throughout southern California.

From Exposition Park and La Cienega Park, to the Fashion Institute of Design and an area of Los Angeles known as “The Cornfields,” HOM arranges day-long events for families that include live music, games, food, costume contests and of course, a feature film on screens up to 100 feet wide.

“We focus on making each screening a large, family-friendly event, rather than just showing a movie for an hour and a half,” stated Snyder.  “We try to make it all about the activities and events, where the movie at the end of the night is the icing on the cake.”

The Hollywood-based firm has shown a variety of movies, including Walk the Line, Swingers, Big Lebowski, Pulp Fiction, Moulin Rouge, The Hangover, Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Back to the Future, Wedding Crashers, Zombie Land, the Shining on Halloween night and the Princess Bride at La Cienega Park, which brought HOM’s largest crowd to date.

Providing equally stunning sound to match the visuals on the screen, Hollywood Outdoor Movies relies on its inventory of JBL VRX 932LAP Constant Curvature line arrays and VRX918SP powered subwoofers, in addition to VERTEC® VT4888 midsize line array elements and VT4880 fullsize arrayable subwoofers.

“The user-friendly and lightweight characteristics of the VRX line arrays allow us to maximize our time and quality during the setup process,” continued Snyder. “With the built-in signal processing and amplifiers, the speakers give us a happy medium between our smaller JBL EON portable loudspeakers and larger, longer-throw VERTEC line arrays. This enables us to easily entertain thousands of guests with plenty of audio coverage and distribution, even in large outdoor areas.”

Utilizing inflatable AIRSCREEN technology to provide the highest quality and safety for all outdoor screenings in any weather conditions, HOM can project a film on screens up to 100 feet wide and more than five stories tall, entertaining thousands of fans in a variety of venues including outdoor parking lots, civic parks and other locations.

“With outdoor audio as challenging as it is, the VRX’s provide the perfect solution,” Snyder continued.  “Many of our guests have raved about actually feeling the bass in the ground as they watch, which is exactly what we want at these feature film screenings.”

HARMAN’s Crown Audio and JBL Professional Power Expansion At Indiana Convention Center

In a unique and challenging expansion project, HARMAN Crown amplifiers and JBL loudspeakers were chosen for the new expanded sound reinforcement system at the Indiana Convention Center. The Convention Center is now integrated with Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts. The system was designed by Bowen Technovation and installed by Fairchild Communications.

The area of expansion features a battery of Crown CTs 600, 1200, and 4200 series amplifiers, all equipped with PIP-USP3 modules. Sound in meeting rooms is provided by JBL Control 226C/T ceiling speakers, while restrooms and back of house areas feature JBL 24CT ceiling speakers.

The $275 million project is the Indiana Convention Center’s fourth expansion since opening in 1972. The current project began after the demolition of the area formally occupied by the RCA Dome and was completed in January 2011.  The expansion added 254,000 square feet of exhibit space, 63,000 square feet of meeting rooms and 10,000 square feet of pre-function space. A connector that links the Convention Center to Lucas Oil Stadium was built as well.

“From a design standpoint we were challenged to integrate several wings of the existing building system with our new systems.  Those areas had varying types and ages of technology that had to be incorporated. We also needed to assure that the new system could integrate and route through the newer systems at Lucas Oil Stadium,” stated Jeff Bowen, president of Bowen Technovation.

“We have had extensive experience with Harman gear in the past but for this specific project we auditioned speakers from several different manufacturers and JBL stood out from the pack from a performance and price standpoint. The Crown amplifiers were chosen for their history of performance and reliability as well as the distinct advantages we were offered by their ability to monitor and control using HiQnet™ System Architect™,” added Bowen.
“From a contractor’s perspective there were many construction milestones that had to be met for the overall success of the project.  There was very little room for error based on the fact that the renovated spaces had already been planned for use with clients so the systems just had to work. We were challenged on this project from all aspects and we are proud to say this installation was a huge success for our company,” stated Mike Cast, vice president of operations for Fairchild Communication Systems.

HARMAN Introduces New Low Cost JBL ScreenArray® 3730 3-Way Loudspeaker At CinemaCon 2011

Adding to its world-class line of ScreenArray® cinema loudspeaker systems, HARMAN’s JBL Professional brand is introducing the new 3730 3-way ScreenArray loudspeaker at CinemaCon 2011. The new 3730 is designed as a very cost-effective solution for small to medium size theaters, offering maximum output and optimal coverage and the patented technology found in all ScreenArray systems.

The 3730 ScreenArray system utilizes a single-driver, full-size midrange horn with a 165mm (6.5-inch) cone transducer, and JBL’s patented high-frequency horn with Screen Spreading Compensation (SSC™), a technology which automatically corrects the spread of high-frequency information through perforated screens, and which provides the ScreenArray system with an asymmetrical coverage pattern 10 degrees down from horizontal for uniform sound in every seat in stadium-type auditoriums.

“Our ScreenArray loudspeaker series has continued to set the standard for cinema systems and the new 3730 enables even more venues to take advantage of JBL’s unmatched performance,” noted Chuck Goodsell, Director of Cinema, JBL Professional. “The cost-effective 3730 further reinforces JBL Professional’s ability to provide scalable solutions across a spectrum of venue sizes and price points.”

The 3730 ScreenArray loudspeaker features a selectable bi-amp or fully passive switchable crossover and a high-frequency, polymer diaphragm, neodymium compression driver for maximum output. The low-frequency section has dual 380mm (15-inch) transducers with ribbon wire voice coils for low distortion and high efficiency.

HARMAN’s JBL ScreenArray® Ultra High Power Loudspeakers and Crown I-Tech HD Amplifiers Bring Powerful Surround Sound Experience to Marcus Theatres® UltraScreen® Cinemas

Marcus Theatres, one of the top cinema chains in the United States, is dedicated to providing the ultimate cinema experience to moviegoers. The company’s patented UltraScreen® movie screen is more than three stories tall, with five times the square footage area of a typical screen. Marcus Theatres is equally committed to cinema sound, using HARMAN’s JBL ScreenArray® 5742 4-way and 5732 3-way ultra-high-power loudspeaker systems, and Crown I-Tech HD Series power amplifiers in its UltraScreen 3D and 2D theaters.

“The quality of the audio is as important as the image in providing moviegoers with a memorable cinema experience,” said Mark Collins, Director of Projection Technology for Marcus Theatres. “When customers go to the movies, they expect to be ‘wowed’ and enjoy powerful, immersive sound they can’t hear anywhere else. The JBL ScreenArray loudspeakers and Crown I-Tech HD amps have more then met our expectations, and the sound we’re getting in our theaters is absolutely spectacular.”

JBL has been awarded three U.S. patents for its ScreenArray technology, created to provide even coverage to every seat, along with wide dynamic range, extended frequency response, maximum power handling and inaudible levels of distortion. The JBL ScreenArray 5742 and 5732 incorporate patented SSC™ Screen Spreading Compensation, which corrects for the high-frequency dispersion of a perforated movie screen when the speakers are placed behind the screen. The 5742 and 5732’s Focused Coverage Technology provides an asymmetrical coverage pattern tilted 10 degrees downward from horizontal to deliver uniform coverage in every seat in either traditional or stadium seating auditoriums.

The JBL 5742 and 5732 both feature a 4-inch titanium high-frequency compression driver operating in conjunction with a patented Optimized Aperture waveguide for uniform frequency response over a large area. The 5742 has a quad midrange array of four 8-inch Differential Drive® cone midrange drivers and two 18-inch woofers, while the 5732 utilizes two 8-inch midrange units and two 15-inch woofers. The 5742 and 5732 can be quad- and tri-amplified, respectively. Both models are ideal for 3D movie theaters, thanks to their expansive sound and precise imaging that complements the 3D on-screen action. The loudspeakers have a shallow profile to accommodate minimum behind the screen depth requirements, and a Flat Front Waveguide design for easy baffle wall installation.

Crown I-Tech HD amplifiers feature a new user-inspired DSP engine co-developed with BSS called OMNIDRIVEHD. The new processing engine features Linear Phase FIR filters that offer unrivaled crossover performance for sonically pure tunings. The OMNIDRIVEHD processing engine also features an innovative new suite of limiters called LevelMAX™. Harman HiQnet™ System Architect ™ mirrors the typical browser navigation interface to provide professionals with a familiar interface to access a host of power configuration and control functions.

Pro Sound And Video Installs HARMAN JBL DrivePack®-Powered VerTec® Line Arrays In Valley Performing Arts Center at California State University, Northridge

Boasting a new HARMAN JBL VerTec® line array system to complement its acoustically-engineered wooden interior and impressive metal and glass exterior, California State University’s newly constructed Valley Performing Arts Center recently commissioned an equipment package for its Great Hall that was sold and installed by Los Angeles-based Pro Sound and Video. The $125 million facility’s 30,000 square feet of glass is matched by 30,000 feet of interior acoustical panels, 568 miles of internal wiring, a moveable orchestra platform and 622 floor diffusers used for soundless air conditioning.

The Valley Performing Arts Center includes the 1,700-seat Great Hall and a 178-seat experimental theater along with rehearsal space, classrooms and other areas. The Center presents a diverse range of performing arts programming, including symphonic orchestras, dance, opera, theater, jazz and pop music, as well as film screenings and lectures. The Great Hall has already hosted a variety of entertainers including Shawn Colvin, Loudon Wainright III, Roseanne Cash and Joan Rivers.

The main sound reinforcement system at the Valley Performing Arts Center includes 29 JBL VerTec® VT4888DP-DA DP Series midsize powered line array elements equipped with JBL DrivePack® technology and JBL’s latest DPDA (DrivePack Digital Audio) input modules. The system is arranged in a left/center/right configuration—arrays of 10 on each side and a center cluster of nine. These three arrays are augmented with two left/right arrays of four VT4882DP-DA midsize arrayable subwoofers each. The system relies on BSS London signal processing for EQ, routing and zoning control. Additional JBL Control® Contractor and AE Compact Series loudspeakers are distributed throughout the space, powered by Crown CTs Series amplifiers.

The combination of powered line arrays and passive loudspeaker fill and paging loudspeaker locations was specified by McKay Conant Hoover, Inc., media and acoustical system consultants. The sound system design gives the venue a great deal of flexibility, and the digitally-networked, powered DP Series enclosures enabled the Pro Sound and Video installation team to maximize efficiency for pre-installation and onsite configuration time. “The high-resolution VerTec line array system allows the engineers at the Valley Performing Arts Center to utilize the sound in multiple configurations, which all perform great,” stated Joe Byrne, Project Manager, Pro Sound and Video. “The fine tuning was taken care of in a timely manner before our first event and the Great Hall has presented nothing but successful performances since opening. The overall sound in the hall is very smooth and the coverage is excellent.  The VerTec line arrays seamlessly handle everything from spoken word to a rock show.”

Ozark Henry Tours With Two HARMAN Soundcraft Vi Consoles in Bespoke Design

Two experienced and respected Belgian sound engineers are currently taking their first ride on Soundcraft’s Vi platform and loving every minute of it.

Which is just as well, since the band Ozark Henry (which is also the stage name of founder Piet Goddaer) will be touring arenas up to 6,000 capacity in Germany and Benelux through the spring and early summer before playing a major part in Europe’s burgeoning festival scene — and finally continuing through 30-40 Benelux theatre dates in the Autumn.

Handling the FOH mix is Tom Janssen, who also happens to be the in-house head technician at Brussels’ popular circuit venue, Ancienne Belgique, while monitor man Marcel Cortleven has worked for many of the country’s leading bands.

It was Stef De Pooter, Audio XL Belgium’s general manager, who made the breakthrough. He knew that both engineers had worked extensively in other digital environments but were looking for a change — so he suggested they review Soundcraft.

It didn’t take the two men long to discover not only the ease of use and analogue feel of the Vi platform but the flexibility, and the fact that they could accomplish extreme mixing techniques much more easily than on other consoles they had worked with. “They loved the whole structure — which was far easier to navigate than other desks they had used,” said the Audio XL man. “They found it very clean and were amazed by the sheer sound and musicality of the Vi consoles.”

A Vi4 was proposed for FOH and Vi1 for the stage — but De Pooter was already thinking way beyond. “We needed a rental company customer for the desks — and decided to make them ultimately tourable in a dry hire situation.” Enter nearby production hire outfit, M&L Productions, run by Luc Meykens.

Stef De Pooter then contacted Thomas Verspaendonck from visionary cabling company, Livepower/Caponline and outlined his requirement. “They make these incredible custom patch panels and cabling assemblies, patch blocks, patching systems and panel engravings,” he said, recalling how previously they had developed universal patch panels to allow any engineer or sub-renting production company to connect up to the stage racks.

With M&L Productions moving increasingly into dry hire he repeated the commission, while for the Ozark Henry tour itself Audio XL’s in-house technical guru Udo Vanmechelen devised a fibre link that would send digital audio, data and Ethernet from the FOH Vi4 to the local rack, stationed together with the shared stage box by the Vi1 in Monitor World.

“Everyone loved the idea of a shared stagerack solution for both consoles to keep the footprint as small as possible (which helps transportation) and all the racks on stage,” said the AudioXL man.

The Vi platform lends itself well to this kind of setup,” explains Vanmechelen,. “We send digital audio, data, Ethernet and even intercom over fibre to the Vi4’s at FOH and to the stagerack, which in this case is shared with the Vi1.” This provides overall analogue mic gain masters for FOH and monitors, while on the Vi4 there is still +18dB/-36dB digital trim to adjust if needed at FOH.

All of this appealed immensely to M&L’s Luc Meynkens when considering the desk. His company already runs Soundcraft’s MH3 and MH4 analogue boards as well as an impressive inventory of JBL VerTec 4888 with infra subs powered by Crown I-Tech HD amps, JBL VRX and Lexicon/BSS/dbx outboard. He had planned to enter the digital world this year in any case, informs Stef De Pooter. “Luc loved the footprint, particularly of the Vi1, and the analogue path … so this has just brought the process forward and given them more options.”

The two Vi’s supplied by M&L are packaged as a straightforward ‘plug-and-play’ system. Stef De Pooter: “The set will only go out fully packaged with digital and analogue cabling, including 12in/4out stage boxes, and made to measure snakes on multiconnectors and patch panels with no need to touch the racks.

“This kind of service is what our customers expect from us,” concludes Luc Meykens.

Firehouse Productions Deploys HARMAN Crown-powered JBL VERTEC® System For Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

Providing sound reinforcement for a star-studded event featuring some of the biggest names in rock and roll, Red Hook, New York-based Firehouse Productions supplied Crown I-Tech HD Amplifiers and JBL VERTEC® line array loudspeakers for the 2011 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Ceremony, staged on March 14, 2011 at the famed Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City.

The event featured performances by some of the inductees including Bruce Springsteen, Judy Collins, John Mayer, and Elton John.  Alice Cooper, Tom Waits, Dr. John, Neil Diamond, and Darlene Love were also among those inducted at the ceremony.  All inductees are ultimately enshrined in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio, which exists to educate its audiences on the global impact of the rock and roll art form.

Firehouse deployed 24 Crown I-Tech 12000HD amplifiers to power the system, which included 10 VERTEC VT4889 fullsize line array elements and eight VT4880A fullsize ultra-long excursion arrayable subwoofers per side. Twelve JBL VRX932LA-1 Constant Curvature loudspeakers were also used for signal-delayed fill locations throughout the room.

“Crown I-Tech HD has continued to be our amplifier of choice for major live events such as this. These amps have allowed us to do more with less boxes and the sonic integrity is unmatched by anything else out there,” stated Mark Dittmar, Lead Design and Integration Engineer for Firehouse Productions. “And, since the ceremony is televised, we need to ensure the PA is not visible in camera shots while at the same time making sure there is adequate sound coverage throughout the venue. JBL’s VERTEC give us a lot of focused power in a small form factor, which allows us to integrate it into the set nicely,” Dittmar added.

Upgrading its audio infrastructure to deliver a more immersive experience to its partners, the not-for-profit Mount Baker Theatre in Bellingham, Washington, recently installed a HARMAN Soundcraft Vi1 digital console after a successful hands-on demonstration and in-concert run through.  After viewing the console at the LDI Conference in Las Vegas, Technical Director John Bauer immediately ordered a demo console and was surprised to see it waiting for him in his office when he returned.

The Mount Baker Theatre provides its guests with a variety of Broadway and off Broadway shows, local productions of Broadway shows, symphonies, local musical acts and dance recitals.  As a non-profit organization, the theatre works to enrich the culture and reinforce a sense of community within the region.

“The Vi1 is a console you can jump right on, whether you are a seasoned pro or a new user, which is why we were able to transition to the digital board so quickly,” stated Bauer.  “There were distinct improvements in the Vi1’s sound, so we are very happy with our console choice.”

Ensuring the building committee and crew members were ready to invest in the Vi1, Bauer brought them all in for a hands-on demonstration. The deciding factor, according to Bauer, was the easy-to-use interface of the Vi1.

“The transition to digital with the Vi1 was clean, clear and easy,” continued Bauer. “Tom Der [of Soundcraft] let us hold onto the demo board until ours was delivered, which allowed us to jumpstart our projects without wasting time.  When our board came in, we took out our memory sticks from the demo and plugged them right into our new board.”

As a test before the final board was shipped to the theatre, Bauer assigned his head engineer to a gig, without prior warning that it was a 12-piece band.  With the Vi1, the engineer had the console labeled and channeled in five minutes – passing Bauer’s test.

“Several of the bands we’ve had in house have already expressed their excitement for the Vi1 and we expect to attract more parties into the theatre with our technological upgrade,” he said.

Kenny Mixx Creates “Pure Music – No Hype!” With HARMAN’s JBL LSR6300 Studio Monitors at Patchwerk Recording Studios

Patchwerk Recording Studios is one of the premier recording and mastering facilities in the southeast. The Atlanta studio has recorded more than 60 gold and platinum albums. Patchwerk Recording Studios’ chief mastering engineer Kenny Daniels, aka Kenny Mixx, has worked with artists including B.o.B, Yo Gotti, Scrappy, Pit Bull, Yung Joc, Flo Rida, Rick Ross, T.I. and many others.

Kenny just finished mastering Sam Sneed’s long-awaited Street Scholars album, the final album to be released on hip-hop label Death Row Records. All of Kenny’s work is done using HARMAN’s JBL LSR6328P studio monitors and an LSR6312P powered studio subwoofer.

Kenny uses a minimalist mastering approach, which can be summed up in his philosophy of “Pure music – no hype!” Kenny noted, “If a song doesn’t require a specific piece of gear, then it is removed from the chain, eliminating any unnecessary processing. I don’t like ‘hyper’ compression, over-limiting or over-exaggerating the highs and lows. Too much compression makes a mix lose its transient attack, inner detail, reverb tails, front-to-back stage depth, air and side-to-side spatial cues. Over-limiting makes a song sound tiny, thin and weak.”

As an extremely critical listener, Kenny needs a speaker system that reveals every sonic detail in a mix. He values the LSR6328P and LSR6312P for their clean, detailed sound quality even at higher volume levels. “Everyone who hears them loves the LSR studio monitors—artists and staffers alike. I believe a big part of this has to do with the fact that the low-frequency drivers in the LSR6328P and the LSR6312P subwoofer sound really transparent, without any distortion. The tweeter also integrates well with these drivers, and the overall sound of the system is really smooth.”

“The speakers not only sound smooth – they’re extremely powerful. They really kick,” Kenny added.

“I’m working out of a brand-new room, and we were able to design the room around the LSR monitors,” Kenny noted. “However, I’ve gotten excellent results with the LSR’s in other rooms because of their ability to adapt to different room acoustics and placement situations.”

ORF Purchases HARMAN’s Soundcraft Vi1™ Consoles For Live Broadcasts

Österreichischer Rundfunk, the Austrian national public service broadcaster, has added a pair of HARMAN’s Soundcraft Vi1 digital consoles to its inventory. The order was placed with Soundcraft’s Austrian distributor Kain Audio by Landesstudio Tirol, one of nine regional studios operating under the ORF umbrella, after carrying out extensive tests against other brands. These will be used for live broadcasting, FOH mixing and recording purposes in the Innsbruck/Tirol region.

According to ORF tonmeister, Jürgen Brunner, the old set-up was desperately in need of upgrading. “We considered a number of different factors, such as price, size, quality and ease of use. We concluded that the Vi1 was the best concept for us, very easy to use, with the Widescreen Vistonics interface, and with no quality limitations.

“The internal filters sounded excellent as did the graphic EQ, and it offers good flexibility, with external Stagebox, MADI option and offline editor — all packaged into a really good price. With a digital console like the Vi1 there is no need to pick up dozens of graphic EQs or other external effects.”

One of the compact Vi1’s will be for portable use while the other will be permanently installed in their Innsbruck broadcasting hall for FOH and recording purposes (using RME MADI cards and M-16 DA extension).

While the desk’s footprint had been one of the overriding criteria, ORF also needed the ability to save and recall different shows with different cues — and to handle everything over a WLAN network in the future. After its first outing — broadcasting a live folk music show from the centre of a ski resort, 2200 meters above sea level — Jürgen Brunner felt the decision had been 100% justified. “The Vi1 is exactly the right console for the things we need  — it’s very easy to use and to configure, and it sounds great.”

This is not the Austrian broadcasters’ first experience with the Soundcraft platform, since they run three analogue consoles in their FÜ25 (small Video OB trucks). And it won’t be the last, since ORF is now dipping further into the manufacturer’s catalogue, and is in the process of purchasing new Compact Stageboxes — both for its mobile Vi1 and also for the new Soundcraft Si Compact, which it also has on order with Kain Audio.

Teer Engineering And HARMAN’s JBL CBT Series Loudspeakers Provide Unobtrusive Yet Expansive Sound At St. James Cathedral

When the time came for St. James Cathedral to upgrade its sound reinforcement system, John Teer of Teer Engineering had a specific design objective: the loudspeakers had to blend into the church’s interior, but without any compromises in performance. To meet the audio and aesthetic needs of the Orlando, Florida house of worship, Teer selected HARMAN’s JBL CBT Series column speakers.

Aesthetics was “a huge part of the project,” Teer said. “The church wanted a high-quality sound system that was state-of-the-art but easy to use--and the technology had to be visually unobtrusive.”

“Before we were involved in the project, the initial system design called for big, tour-grade line array clusters hanging right in the middle of the sanctuary, which was unnecessary,” noted Teer, whose Orlando-based firm designed and installed the upgraded audio system.

“The church needed a sound system for spoken word only, and the church’s pipe organ didn’t need any sound reinforcement. So, we recommended going with a smaller-format system with speakers that could be placed much closer to the listeners. We also wanted to locate the speakers closer to the parishioners because there’s a lot of marble in the space, which we had to deal with to make sure there wouldn’t be an excessive amount of reverb.”

“The CBT 100LA was perfect for the application. They have tight pattern control and excellent projection over a long distance,” noted Teer.

The speaker’s wide, even coverage pattern also solved a structural constraint imposed by the cathedral’s interior: “We didn’t have the option of installing the speakers along the columns in the sanctuary, which would have been a logical solution, because we could not cut into them and run cable.”

Because of this, Teer installed nine CBT 100LA speakers throughout the sanctuary, mostly in low visibility areas where the walls meet the ceiling. Teer also placed three JBL VRX928 line array loudspeakers for additional fill where the CBT speakers weren’t practical. The system also features BSS Soundweb London processing, which handles more than 16 zones of audio.

“The system sounds great and the church is extremely happy,” Teer concluded.

BSS® Audio’s Soundweb™ London Networked Digital Signal Processors Provide the Backbone for Audio at the Computer History Museum

In January 2011, the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California completed a 2-year, $19 million renovation that included a total upgrade of its audio system. System designer Bowen Technovation turned to BSS Audio Soundweb London signal processors and networking products to serve as the backbone of the Museum’s large-scale audio system.

The Computer History Museum is located in the heart of Silicon Valley, an appropriate location for a facility dedicated to the preservation and celebration of computing history. The Museum is home to one of the largest international collections of computing artifacts in the world, including hardware, photographs, documents, software, movies and more.

“We chose BSS Audio because we needed a system that could accommodate the signal distribution, processing and control needs of a large, complex networked audio installation,” noted Bowen Technovation President, Jeff Bowen, whose company specializes in audio/video, lighting, control and production solutions for museums, planetariums, science centers and other facilities. The Museum’s BSS Audio equipment includes the BLU-160 signal processor, BLU-120 I/O expander and BLU-BOB2 (Break-Out Box) output expander. Each of these components feature the Soundweb London digital audio bus, which can carry up to 256 channels of digital audio over standard Cat5e cable. The entire audio system is networked using Harman’s HiQnet® protocol.

“The exhibit space has close to 100 video displays with sound, as well as four theaters,” noted Bowen. “Because of the long distances involved, extra care needed to be taken in the system design to ensure that signals from the control rooms reached their intended devices without loss of quality or dependability,” continued Bowen. “In addition, the exhibit space has an open design and achieving a good audio balance was a small challenge.”

Bowen may be understating that a bit. “Tuning each of the 100-plus audio systems took two days. The exhibits are very ‘live’ acoustically and with so many audio systems in operation at the same time, I had to be creative in differentiating the different sonic spaces with the use of frequency filtering and volume level adjustments. For example, in the seven-screen Exit Theater the room had a peak around 100 to 200Hz that was bleeding into the adjacent exhibits. By using the BLU-160 to notch very specific frequencies out of the system we greatly reduced the resonant bleed. The Soundweb London software and its straightforward user interface greatly facilitated the process – especially considering we used extensive processing on every audio channel in the place.”

“We created customized control pages for the routing and management of all of the more than 100 audio channels,” noted Bowen. “The ease of using the HiQnet London Architect configuration pages and their drag-and-drop functionality allowed us to provide this heavily customized system. In particular, the stereo processing objects made my work in tuning the system much easier than if we had used certain other audio processors.”

“We even tied the BSS Audio network in with customized motion sensors that allow the volume in the exhibits to automatically reduce in level when no visitors are present, and ramp up the volume when someone walks into the exhibit.”

“I believe the Computer History Museum is one of our best projects,” concluded Bowen. “The owner is very pleased with the results.”

Stadium Red’s Music Creation And Lifestyle Company Spans All Genres With AKG Microphones

As one of the most successful and relatively new studios in the recording and production industry, Stadium Red relies on a full arsenal of AKG microphones to provide the best customer service, while making award-winning hits for clients. Built from an older, dormant studio space, Stadium Red has won eight GRAMMYâ Awards in its first four years of business, including four out of 11 nominations in nine categories in 2011.

Located in Harlem in New York, NY, the studio was purchased in July 2007 and opened that September as a one-room space.  Founder and CEO Claude Zdanow has since built his ‘music creation and lifestyle company’ into a 6,000-square-foot state-of-the-art space with four studios and a mastering suite.  With a tight budget and a much shorter list of clientele in 2007, Zdanow steadily stocked his microphone collection with reliable and diverse AKG equipment.

“When we first opened, we were excited to take on the music industry and produce hits, but we didn’t quite know which direction or genre was right for us,” stated Zdanow.  “Our first investment was AKG mics, which allowed us to take on diverse projects with a small equipment list – the C414’s can do everything and did.  From changing polarity to controlling roll off, all of the mics are versatile enough to get the perfect sound while recording.”

Stadium Red boasts three AKG C414 XLS’s, two D112’s, two C1000’s, one C4000 B and a C451.  Rounding off its list of Harman gear is a Crown XLS 402 amplifier, one JBL SR6615 power amp, a BSS FDS-336T MiniDrive system, Lexicon Plug-ins PCM 91, 81, 70 and 480L Digital Effects system and dbx 160, 160XT, 165A, 166, 120XP, 223XT and Drive rack PA.

Concentrating on supreme comfort in the studio, each of the mixing rooms and the mastering suite are built around the primary needs of the producers or engineers who occupy those spaces on a regular basis.  The full-service studio setup also helps to ensure music is not leaked out of a studio mid-production.  “We do it all from production, recording, mixing and mastering, so there is little worry about songs being ‘leaked’ since it doesn’t leave the studio until it’s finished,” Zdanow continued.

With a world-renowned team of producers and engineers, including Just Blaze, David Frost, Omen, Tom Lazarus, Ariel Borujow, Joseph Pedulla and Ricardo Gutierrez, Stadium Red offers an experienced team to clients, ranging from Drake, Chris Brown, Nikki Minaj, Styles P, Eminem, Björk, Yo-Yo Ma, Thursday and San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, among other award-winning artists and groups.

“As a music creation and lifestyle company, we understand brand recognition is very important in our industry,” continued Zdanow. “The AKG brand sets industry standards. From the beginning, our engineers requested AKG equipment because they were the tools needed to make the best records.  Stadium Red’s team signifies the best and we continue to be the voice of making music with the help of AKG and Harman.”

Underscoring the increasing progress that the audio-video manufacturing community is making in arriving at working AVB solutions, AVnu Alliance hosted an AVB plugfest last week at Harman Professional’s Signal Processing Group in Salt Lake City.  The AVnu Alliance is the industry forum dedicated to the advancement of professional-quality audio video by promoting the adoption of the IEEE 802.1 Audio Video Bridging (AVB) standards over various networking link-layers.  The plugfest — an invitation-only gathering of hardware manufacturers with near-market ready products —featured Harman and five other manufacturers testing interoperability and performance of AVB prototype technologies.  During the plugfest, engineers from the different companies had a rare hands-on opportunity to test connectivity, interoperability and interfaces.

“The promise of AVB is universal connectivity with no performance compromises,” said Rob Urry, Harman Professional CTO, Vice President / GM Harman Professional Signal Processing Group.  “But to achieve this, all participants on the AVB network need to be able to connect and comprehensively test their technologies on the network.  The plugfest enabled this testing but also provided a platform for remarkable, valuable dialog between very smart, committed engineers from a host of companies.  We were very pleased to host this plugfest and to mark another important milestone in the advancement of AVB.”Echoing this sentiment, Lee Minich, Marketing Working Group Chair, AVnu Alliance, and President, Lab X Technologies, noted, “Communication — whether it’s for performance, commercial, medical or educational applications — is accelerated enormously by AV technologies.  In turn, AVB is already making AV communications more effective, more usable and more affordable than ever before. This transformative IEEE protocol is enabled by the AVnu Alliance companies who attend plugfests to share ideas and experiences.  Their communication at this event will eventually advance AV communications across our industry around the world.”

As many of the products and technologies tested in the plugfest are still in the development phase, details of the participants and the technologies they tested must be retained until market-ready.  The fact that this is now the fifth successful AVB PlugFest is an indicator of the forward momentum.  The first AVnu Alliance AVB plugfest was also held at Harman Professional Signal Processing Group in Salt Lake City and featured technologies from four AVnu Alliance member companies.

Pick of the Hits - Live Sound International

Equestrian School in Austria Hits Target with BSS® Audio Soundweb™ London Installation

In a unique and challenging audio project, BSS Audio was chosen for sound processing at the new Glock Horse Performance Center in the Austrian town of Treffen bei Villach, in Carinthia. The school, named after its sponsor, Austrian firearms manufacturing Gaston Glock, needed the capability to provide consistent audio coverage across the facility’s four riding halls. The installation was performed by Musik-Aktiv with the assistance of Harman Professional distributor Kain Audio.

The facility deploys four Soundweb London BLU-160 devices and four BLU-BOB 8-channel output expanders, placed on the Soundweb London fault-tolerant digital audio bus. The two mobile racks are configured identically and the digital audio bus audio channels can be connected at four different points. Feeding the BLU-BOB devices, source inputs include four wireless commentator microphones (with pre-programmed ducking function), and a small external Soundcraft® mixer.

“The requirement was for a new system that would provide even coverage at sufficient volume, with excellent speech intelligibility,” said Kain’s IT and Applications Engineer, Iuliu Varga.

One rack is assigned to the first two riding halls and the second to the other two halls, with expandability provided for future outdoor coverage requirements. Since they are identical, the two racks also serve as redundant units.

“The digital audio bus channels don’t need any Ethernet switches — only patch panels. We only use Gigabit Ethernet switches in the two mobile racks to connect the BLU-160, touch-computer and wireless access point,” added Varga.

Sound reinforcement is provided by JBL® CBT 70J/70E and CBT 100 asymmetrical vertical columns, which send highly concentrated sound toward the back of the venue, while down-filling a broader, less concentrated sound to the front of the venue, thereby maintaining constant pattern control. Additionally, 58 JBL Control 29AV loudspeakers, 10 JBL Control 28 loudspeakers andlo 18 JBL Control 25 loudspeakers were deployed in various other areas, all powered by Crown® XTi series amplifiers.

“Gaston Glock is a purely quality-driven manager and he wanted the best. The operators are able to use the intuitive custom control panels, created within HiQnet London Architect, and are delighted with the result,” stated Christian Kain, president, Kain Audio.

Harman HiQnet™ is the world's first connectivity and control protocol that integrates all product categories in the signal chain for professional audio systems of all types, size, and applications. Harman HiQnet no longer requires the user to manage multiple disparate operating systems or be responsible for programming individual signal processors, speaker controllers, wireless microphone systems, and mixing consoles. HiQnet was developed by engineers from across Harman’s Professional Division and is coordinated by the System Development and Integration Group (SDIG), a team of dedicated systems specialists based in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Soundcraft Studer Customer Experience Center Flying High On First Birthday

Since its grand opening in March 2010 by Harman Chairman, President and CEO Dinesh Paliwal and Blake Augsburger, Executive Vice-President and President of Harman Professional Division, the new Customer Experience Centre at the Soundcraft Studer facility in the UK has proved a hit with visitors from all over the world.

The Centre has hosted International Distributor and Dealer meetings, training courses, educational and industry visits and hundreds of product demonstrations in the 900-square-meter area which incorporates demonstration studios for the range of Soundcraft, Studer and other Harman equipment as well as a fully-equipped training room and customer acceptance test rooms. The relaxing Internet Café area is a quiet place for visitors to relax and enjoy a cup of coffee or cold drink, collect their emails or have a relaxing lunch.

Guests enter the Centre through a time-tunnel-like museum corridor, with historical products from Soundcraft and Studer on display, including mixers and tape machines dating back to each company’s beginnings. Pride of place naturally goes to a Studer J37 Tape Machine as used at Abbey Road studios in the 1960’s and 1970’s, including on the classic Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album. Mixers on display include the original Soundcraft Series 1S and Series 2 consoles from the 1970’s, and the original E54 from Studer, dating back to 1954. The Centre recently hosted a visit by members of the Institute of Broadcast Sound, and the museum pieces brought back happy memories for many of the group.

In the Broadcast demonstration studios, a central Studer Route 6000 system is the hub of an audio network which feeds Studer OnAir 2500 and 3000 consoles, along with a Vista 5, Vista 8 and the new flagship Vista 9 console, with shareable sources including microphones and a multi-track DAW system that can be fed to any station. The Live studio features Soundcraft Vi6™, Vi4™, Vi1™ and Si Series digital consoles with a complete Gibson band setup.

“We often get several different groups in the Centre at the same time,” reports Keith Watson, Marketing Director. “We may have a group of national broadcasters swapping stories over lunch with a group of live touring engineers and maybe a recording guy, when people from differing areas of the audio industry mix together it always seems create a great buzz—and of course, everyone always enjoys the tour of our state-of-the-art production facilities downstairs.”

The Centre is a permanent active demonstration facility for many Harman products. The training room features a BSS Soundweb London-based audio system with a BLU-10 able to control and mix all the audio sources such as AKG wireless microphones, audio players and also to control the integral projector. JBL wall and ceiling loudspeakers are powered by Crown amplifiers, and of course the whole system is wired for Harman’s HiQnet system. HDTV is fed to the Café area, while a JBL Ontime system plays background music.

“We plan to add more active and real-life use of Harman products to the Centre” adds David Neal, Director of Marketing Communications, “so that our visitors get a full picture of what Harman can offer them.”

The Centre has become so busy that the company appointed Zoie Ireland as a full-time administrator to manage and maintain all aspects of the Centre.

Songwriter/Musician/Producer CJ Vanston And Jeff “Skunk” Baxter Rely On JBL LSR6300 Series Studio Monitors In Successful Collaboration

As a sought-after songwriter, musician and producer, CJ Vanston has worked with dozens of legendary artists including Tina Turner, Joe Cocker, ‘NSync, Julio Iglesias, Ringo Starr, B.B. King, Barbra Streisand, Spinal Tap, Chris Botti, Celine Dion and many more. His credits include more than 100 albums and movie soundtracks, as well as the music for all of Christopher Guest’s films (including Waiting For Guffman and A Mighty Wind). CJ Vanston does a lot of his work in his studio, The Treehouse, in Hollywood, which is outfitted with an eye-popping array of state-of-the-art and vintage gear—including Vanston’s preferred JBL LSR6300 Series studio monitors.

Currently, Vanston is working with guitarist Jeff “Skunk” Baxter of Steely Dan and Doobie Brothers fame on the debut album from the Baxter Vanston Band. The record is slated for 2011 release and will feature Michael McDonald and a host of surprise guest stars. Vanston has also partnered with Phil Collen of Def Leppard on a new album and an online label, moodahmusic.com.

With a continuous influx of projects, Vanston relies on the LSR studio monitors to provide accurate and reliable performance. “I don’t want any surprises from my studio monitors,” noted Vanston. “I want what I’m hearing to be the same as what’s being heard in the outside world—and I don’t want to do that in a lo-fi way. After I’m done recording an album, I don’t want to get a call from the mastering engineer because something doesn’t sound right. I need a true, accurate representation of what’s going on in the mix.”

Since making the LSR studio monitors a fixture in The Treehouse, Vanston comments, “The LSR monitors have been amazing. For the last few records I’ve done, the mastering engineers have barely touched the mixes—that says a lot right there. The LSR monitors have a big, beefy sound, even without a subwoofer. They’re so rich-sounding that I don’t get any ear fatigue as I would with some other studio monitors.”
