Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland is a state-of-the-art, 51,000-capacity facility for sports, concerts and special events. Its waveform-shaped architecture is striking in design, and houses four tiers of seating, with seven stories of floors and two basement levels. Aviva Stadium is the home of the Irish rugby union team and the Republic of Ireland national football team.
Audio for Aviva Stadium is provided by a massive JBL sound system that includes 105 Precision Directivity (PD) Series loudspeakers, augmented by Application Engineered (AE) Series AM6200/64 speakers. The system also includes Crown Audio amplifiers and BSS Soundweb London signal processing, connectivity and control products. The prestigious installation was carried out by the highly experienced, UK-based TG Baker (Sound) Ltd. under the supervision of project manager Tony Mott. The system was sold by Sound Technology, Harman Professional’s distributor in the UK and ROI, who also provided technical assistance via its project support services.
The Aviva Stadium installation is a fully compliant public address-voice alarm (PAVA) system that is massive in scale, with 26 42-U equipment racks, 118 PAVA zones, 59 paging zones and 365 loudspeaker circuits. It has an audio matrix of 172 inputs and 468 outputs, with spare capacity for future input/output expansion. The system was designed to deliver a high speech transmission index (STI), an indication of speech intelligibility, along with a broadband SPL of more than 105dB and speech SPL of more than 101dB.
“During the proposal stage we considered a number of loudspeaker options,” Mott said. “However, having successfully used the PD Series on other stadium projects we knew we could demonstrate to the client that the sound system would meet the performance requirements detailed in the specification.” To fulfill the design, Mott selected JBL PD Series loudspeakers, and by using custom brackets, a variety of speaker orientations and careful attention to directivity control, he was able to achieve uniform sound coverage to virtually every seat in the stadium.
Coverage on the single tier of the stadium’s north stand is accomplished using a combination of PD5200 and PD5300 Series loudspeakers on the edge of the roof. For the other three stands, a horseshoe-shaped array of PD743 loudspeakers is used to evenly cover the longest throw from the gantry to the lower tier. PD5200/95 and PD5200/64 speakers cover the upper tier, and a ring of PD5125 loudspeakers supplies the low frequencies. Five JBL Application Engineered (AE) Series AM6200/64 loudspeakers provide additional coverage.

AKG DMS 700 Wireless Microphone System Syncs 2011 53rd Annual GRAMMY Awards®
Music’s Biggest Night® would be nothing without sound. As the world watched their favorite musicians perform and present at the GRAMMY Awards®, AKG was tasked to provide flawless audio through its DMS700 wireless microphone system and corresponding D-series microphones. Held at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 13, the GRAMMY Awards honor those who have achieved recording greatness around the world.
Throughout the telecast, AKG equipment was utilized to deliver key announcements, including the introductions of Ricky Martin and Miley Cyrus, to the live crowd and millions of at-home viewers. Located at two stations during the awards, numerous D7’s and DHT700 handheld mics were in front of the main stage as well as in the satellite stage outside of the arena.
Five-time GRAMMY® Award winner, Usher and his protégé, Best New Artist nominee Justin Bieber both wowed the crowd during their dual performance, wearing AKG CM311 microphones.
Deployed by Burbank, California-based wireless microphone specialists Soundtronics Wireless, AKG microphones were a success in the eyes of GRAMMY Awards Audio Director, Michael Abbott. “The AKG DMS700 system’s digital transmitter delivered audio without the compander artifacts associated with most RF hand mics, “ Abbot said. “In the RF-intensive environment of our live GRAMMY broadcast, the system operated extremely well. Our mix engineers were pleased with the smooth frequency response of the DHT700 and D7 handheld mics.”
Utilizing the AKG DMS700 system for the first time, David Bellamy, owner of Soundtronics was pleased as he monitored the mics during the show. “The AKG system and microphones performed very well and are great pieces of equipment,” Bellamy said. “We’re still getting used to the system as we only debuted it at the GRAMMYS, but the more I learn about it, the more I like it and the more I like it, the more I’ll integrate it into our equipment rotation.”

Audio Visions Delivers Stunning Outdoor Sound for Jazz Aspen Snowmass Festival With JBL VERTEC® Line Arrays
Founded in 1991, the Jazz Aspen Snowmass Festival has grown to become one of Colorado’s most popular outdoor music festivals. The recent 2010 event in Snowmass Town Park hosted a wide variety of artists including Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Black Crowes, Glenn Frey and Joe Walsh, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Wilco and other acts. The 3-day festival attracted more than 35,000 fans each day.
Audio Visions has fielded a JBL VERTEC® system at the festival for the past five years. With offices in Omaha and Minneapolis, the company is the Midwest’s largest single-source, full-service production company. For the most recent event, Audio Visions provided a main PA system comprising 12 JBL VERTEC VT4889 fullsize line array elements per side, with an additional six VT4888 midsize line array elements in use for front fill. A dbx DriveRack 4800 loudspeaker management system was in use for front-end processing.
“After five successful years, we’ve grown to know the characteristics of VERTEC very well,” noted Chip Kempke of Audio Visions. “We know that the VT4889 has the performance characteristics needed for this large-scale festival, which features a wide variety of musical acts and styles.”
At an altitude of 2,500 meters (8,200 feet), the high elevation of the event location presents a temporary installation challenge. “The thin mountain air requires us to drive the system at a higher level than normal to deliver a high SPL,” said front of house engineer Elliot Nielsen. “The thin air really deadens the sound, so we typically have to push the system very hard. The VT4889 loudspeakers handle the situation without difficulty. The VERTEC system has performed as advertised; it’s an easy-to-use line array with a ton of horsepower and performs predictably in any environment.”
The outdoor stage venue itself presented another challenge. “The roof of the stage is curved, which creates some really weird frequency responses at various locations, and the sound can get a little muddled on the monitor mix side of the stage because of echo reflections from the roof,” said Kempke. “We’ve had to learn what the roof was doing to the sound distribution on stage and in the audience area, and make adjustments to work around it.”
The diverse musical lineup presented yet another test of the system for the Audio Visions crew. “The lineup of artists at this festival ranges from popular and rock to jazz, blues and hip-hop, so we need a system that can handle the varying dynamic contrasts and still provide high-quality sound,” Kempke pointed out. “We’ve found that JBL VERTEC loudspeakers have superior sound quality compared to competitive models, along with the requisite directivity characteristics and power-handling capability for a large-scale outdoor event.”

Houston Northwest Church Makes the Transition From Analog to Digital with Installation of Soundcraft® Si3 Console
Houston Northwest Church is one of the city’s major spiritual centers, a Baptist church that can host more than 2,000 congregants. Music is an integral part of their services, which combine a contemporary and traditional feel with music that can range from hymns and gospel to rock and country. To help support this wide variety of musical styles, Houston Northwest Church (HNW) recently installed a Soundcraft Si3 Digital Live Sound Console.
“We needed a new console because our old one was past the ten year mark and showing its age,” said Clint Collins, HNW media director. “It was a 48-channel console and I had every channel taken up with a need for more room to expand. With the old analog configuration I had to have three full racks of outboard EQs, compressors, limiters and other gear, and our patch bay was over 25 bays long. We were long overdue for an upgrade.”
Collins needed a console that could handle the large-scale requirements of an HNW service. “I run six wireless mics in addition to 10 ensemble mics, five choir mics and four wired solo mics. Our band configuration is 12 channels of drum mics, two electric and two acoustic guitars, bass, three keyboard players, percussion and sometimes even a brass section.”
“I looked into various digital consoles and kept coming back to the Soundcraft Si3,” Collins noted. “I have been an analog guy pretty much my whole engineering life, although I’m also a certified ProTools engineer, so being used to using nothing but analog desks and analog outboard gear, I needed something that would allow me to make the transition into the live digital world as quickly and easily as possible. I have never liked ‘banking’ through layers of parameters or searching for the source I am trying to mix quickly. My band often requires me to make changes on the spot and major changes between songs.”
“I needed a console that would, although digital, still have a fairly large footprint in order to make access to priority channels a breeze. The Si3 allows me to make multiple changes quickly and easily. Another advantage is that so many features are built right into the console, including all the onboard compression and limiting, reverb and time-based effects, and input/output virtual patching. All this allowed me to put my patch bay and outboard racks on a serious diet! It’s now so much easier to recall setting for various songs and multiple services.”
“I love the quality of the sound and the onboard effects. The compressors sound great and the Lexicon effects are a tremendous step up from our previous time-based units. Also, I need to have the option to gate any channel across the instrument spectrum and the Si3 allows me to do this.”
The Si3’s value was also a factor in Collins’ decision. “Our church, like many others in today’s economy, was under pressure to keep the budget for the upgrade as low as possible and make the most out of what we spent. The Si3 gave us a tremendous amount of features and room for expansion at a fraction of the cost of other digital consoles. Basically, the Si3 was my bridge into the digital mixing world and I would not have been able to do it if the Si3 didn’t offer so much for the money.” Ease of use was another factor. “I am extremely pleased with how easy it has been to set up, configure and learn the functionality of the Si3 in a very small amount of time.”
The Soundcraft Si3 Digital Live Sound Console is designed for installed sound and tour sound and is ideal for houses of worship, music venues, theaters, broadcasting and other applications. The Si3 offers total ease of operation – above each fader is a Virtual Channel Strip with rotary encoders that change function according to the mode selected, providing ready access to key parameters. The console provides extensive connectivity and configuration options including 64 mic inputs, four stereo inputs, 24 bus outputs, four independent Lexicon processors and more.

SLJ Field Soundcraft Vi1™ Digital Console For French President Sarkozy
Soundcraft digital desks have piloted the sound mix for many leading rock bands over the years, but in the last six months they have also reinforced the speech of two world leaders.
Following the use of Soundcraft consoles during the visit to the UK of Pope Benedict XVI last summer, a Vi1 was again on duty in the Chateauroux region of France on January 20, as French President Nicolas Sarkozy addressed more than 1,000 health workers in the gymnasium of the local hospital in Chatillon-sur-Indre.
The rental company called in to convert the gym into a full production space were Poitiers-based sound and lighting company, SLJ Sonorisation, Eclairage, Vidéo. They built a lighting structure which was rigged in the roof while the President’s staff constructed the stage itself.
FOH engineer, Benoit Lasjuilliarias, confirmed that the President always favours using local service operators where possible on his regional visits throughout the country, and the gymnasium was one of several locations visited by M. Sarkozy during his trip to France’s mid-west. Although they have worked for the President’s office in the past, this was SLJ’s first outing with the new 32-input Soundcraft Vi1.
“We purchased it on January 10th and little over a week later we were using it for the first time — with the President,” declared Benoit. “So there was quite a lot of pressure.”
He added that although the company could have chosen other digital desks in their inventory, they felt they needed a board with sufficient output capacity for TV and radio feeds. “The desk also needed to provide simplicity of use and give us a lot of onboard 30-band equalisers — which the BSS effects do. We could see that with the Vi1, Soundcraft were one step ahead of their competitors.”
SLJ first became interested in the Soundcraft Vi1 when they saw the new console with French distributors SCV at last year’s Frankfurt Pro Light + Sound show.
Hugely impressed, they placed an order and SCV’s Jean-François (Jeff) Guillot duly provided the training. However, the learning curve had been remarkably short. “The desk was very intuitive, and even without much knowledge of digital desks you could be ready in a few minutes … the transition is very easy,” confirmed Benoit Lasjuilliarias.
This view was shared by SLJ’s own theatre and corporate customers after they had attended a demo.
Over in Chatillon-sur-Indre, the Vi1 took a simple live mic feed from the President who spoke for around an hour. The signal was routed to four OB vans for TV broadcast, with four separate audio sources sent via Nagra digital recorders for the radio station and journalist feeds.
Although the President’s address didn’t require the desk to add any DSP cards, SLJ did take the precaution of purchasing a MADI expansion card to connect to a Vi6 stage box for future use. Benoit explained, “An associate of ours also has a Vi1 with a stage box — so now we have the possibility of being able to do a FOH and monitor mix.”
In conclusion, SLJ’s sound man gave the Vi1 an unqualified seal of approval. “This is an extremely good desk — highly functional and an easy routing path. Everything is right in front of you, and you can see all the sends at a glance.”

JBL LSR6300 Series Studio Monitors and VERTEC® Line Arrays Shine at the 53rd Annual GRAMMY® Awards
On a night full of surprises, JBL Professional loudspeakers were once again called upon at the 53rd Annual GRAMMY® Awards to ensure predictable, high-quality live sound and audio for television broadcast. Held at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 13, the GRAMMY Awards were broadcast live in HDTV and 5.1 surround sound on the CBS Television Network. As it has for the past several years, ATK Audiotek of Valencia, California provided JBL VERTEC® line arrays for live sound reinforcement, while JBL LSR studio monitors were used in the critical listening room for the telecast.
The annual GRAMMY Awards telecast, known as Music’s Biggest Night®, is presented by The Recording Academy® to honor outstanding achievements in the production and performance of recorded music. This year’s awards were marked by a variety of elaborate stage productions bringing together some of the biggest names in music today, including Lady Gaga, Eminem, Rihanna, Bruno Mars, Lady Antebellum, Cee-Lo Green and Katy Perry. Lady Gaga and Eminem both earned multiple GRAMMY Awards, while Arcade Fire won Album Of The Year for The Suburbs.
During the telecast, JBL LSR6300 Series studio monitors were used to monitor the broadcast in the critical listening room. Since the critical listening room was set up in a provisional space at the STAPLES Center, engineers took advantage of the LSR6300 Series’ on-board RMC Room Mode Correction system to compensate for acoustic anomalies of the room. “We used a 5.1 JBL LSR6300 Series studio monitor system to carefully listen to details in the mix, as we have for the past several years,” said Michael Abbott, Audio Director for the GRAMMY Awards. “Once again, the LSR monitors performed extremely well and helped us accurately hear the subtleties of the show.”
For live sound reinforcement, ATK Audiotek deployed 70 JBL VERTEC VT4889 fullsize line array elements in multiple overhead arrays, supplemented with JBL VRX932LA compact constant-curvature loudspeakers. “With such a variety of performers on stage during the Awards, and with such elaborate productions, providing live sound for the GRAMMY Awards poses its own unique set of challenges,” said Scott Harmala, CTO/VP Engineering, ATK Audiotek. “We have enjoyed tremendous success with the VERTEC line arrays for the GRAMMY Awards in the past and this year was no different. They provided powerful and accurate sound throughout the arena.”

ATK Audiotek Provides Superior Sound For Super Bowl XLV With JBL VERTEC® Line Arrays
ATK Audiotek recently provided audio services for Super Bowl XLV, marking the 14th straight year the company has been involved in the country’s biggest sporting event. Once again, ATK Audiotek deployed its custom-designed cart system with JBL VERTEC® line arrays for the Halftime Show and Post-Game Show of the Super Bowl, held at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas on February 6, 2011. The carts were also used for Lea Michele’s rendition of “America the Beautiful” and Christina Aguilera’s performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
This year’s Super Bowl, broadcast via FOX Sports, was the most watched in history, viewed by an estimated 111 million people in the United States alone. The Black-Eyed Peas starred in the Halftime Show, which also included guest appearances by guitarist Slash and R&B singer Usher. The Post-Game Show included the Lombardi Trophy presentation, awarded to this year’s NFL champion Green Bay Packers.
For Super Bowl XLV, ATK Audiotek deployed its custom-designed cart system, which allows for easy setup between events, and quick transport of the VERTEC loudspeakers on and off the field. Each of the carts included five JBL VERTEC VT4889 fullsize line array elements, which provide an optimal combination of light weight, fidelity and output power capability, making them ideal for ATK Audiotek’s cart system. ATK also deployed additional VT4889 arrays that were suspended overhead to supplement the permanently installed system at Cowboys Stadium.
“The Super Bowl is one of the most unique and challenging events we handle every year, and our success hinges on our ability to not only provide high-quality audio, but to set up and tear down our systems within a very stringent timeline,” said Scott Harmala, CTO/VP Engineering, ATK Audiotek. “The VERTEC line arrays enable us to stay on schedule while delivering that requisite level of audio performance.”

Loudness Sonorizacao Provides JBL VERTEC® Line Arrays For Rush Concert In Brazil
Loudness Sonorizacao of Sao Paulo, Brazil, one of Brazil’s leading concert audio suppliers, recently provided a large, multi-array JBL VERTEC® line array system for legendary rock band Rush at an outdoor show in Rio de Janeiro. The concert was part of Rush’s “Time Machine Tour” and was held at the Praca de Apoteose (Apotheosis Square) venue, famous as a staging site for Rio’s legendary Carnival.
Rush’s “Time Machine Tour” embarked in July 2010 and is expected to continue through the end of 2011. For the tour, Rush is playing its album Moving Pictures in its entirety for the first time ever. The concerts on the tour also include selections from Rush’s upcoming album, Clockwork Angels, while also featuring performances of Rush’s most popular songs, including “Tom Sawyer,” “Closer to the Heart” and “Limelight.”
The main PA system deployed for Rush by Loudness featured a total of 60 VERTEC VT4889 fullsize line array elements. The main left and right arrays each consisted of 18 VT4889 loudspeakers, each accompanied by an array of 12 VT4880A ultra-long excursion arrayable subwoofers. For outfill, Loudness provided arrays of 12 VT4889 loudspeakers per side. The system also included 36 SRX728 floor-stacked subwoofers. Crown I-Tech 8000 amplifiers powered the system.
“We enjoy using the VERTEC line arrays because of their easy setup and their consistent performance,” said Marcio Pilot, co-owner of Loudness Sonorizacao. “The system performed to expectations for the Rush concert. We were very happy with the results.”
Front of house engineer Brad Madix, who has been mixing Rush’s Time Machine tour worldwide, was enthusiastic about the results achieved for the show in Rio.
"Rush usually carries a JBL-loaded line array system from Clair Global," noted Madix. "But on international tour legs, when we are not carrying our own full rig, I'm always excited when a JBL VERTEC system is available. Used with the V4 DSP presets developed by JBL's Paul Bauman, the VERTEC rig sounds full and powerful with plenty of detail. It really complements the band's musical style. We had a fantastic show in Rio with Marcio and his team from Loudness."

Bassist Amanda Ruzza Finds Unique Sonic Uses for the Lexicon® LXP Native Reverb Plug-In Bundle
Amanda Ruzza’s open-minded musical approach led her to the Lexicon LXP Native Reverb Plug-In Bundle, used in an unconventional way – as a sonic enhancement to the sound of her 5-string and fretless electric basses. “After installing the LXP reverb plug-in on my computer and quickly dabbling with it to get an idea of what it could do, I immediately used it on some of my previously recorded bass tracks to get some really unique sounds,” Ruzza explained. “By exaggerating some of the levels of its virtual knobs to settings you might not normally use, I was able to create interesting synth-bass solo sounds.”
Born in São Paulo, Brazil to a Chilean mother who loved opera and an Italian father who loved rock and roll, Ruzza developed an eclectic musical ear at an early age. By age 13, she was already gigging regularly in Brazil, and in 2003 began recording and touring with the all-female country band Mustang Sally. She currently performs with her group the Amanda Ruzza Quintet and other artists in the Tri-State New York metro area.
“Generally, bass players tend not to use reverb during live performances,” Ruzza noted. “However, I believe that reverb can be a very effective creative tool in the studio, especially to give a bass solo a bigger sonic space in the mix or to enhance a melody played on a fretless bass and make it sound especially rich and beautiful. This plug-in has really sparked the creativity in my bass playing.”
In addition to adding the LXP reverb plug-in to the sound of her electric basses, Ruzza, like many other artists, engineers and producers, uses the plug-in to enhance the sound of other instruments and vocals. “I use the Lexicon plug-in to completely change some of the synthesizer presets I use in Logic Studio (recording software). I feel like I’ve just added brand-new synthesizer and virtual instrument software to my digital audio workstation.”
“I can hear the fact that in creating this software, Lexicon made sure to keep the sound quality of its very well-respected hardware reverbs intact. Also, the LXP plug-in is so easy to use.”
The PC- and Macintosh®-compatible Lexicon LXP Native Reverb Plug-In Bundle is designed to work with popular DAWs like Pro Tools and Logic, as well as with any other VST®, Audio Unit™ or RTAS®-compatible host. It offers four of Lexicon’s most renowned algorithms – Chamber, Hall, Plate and Room – plus 220 finely crafted studio presets.
Its intuitive user interface provides easy access to key parameters, with a graphical real-time full-color display that illustrates the reverb tail, frequency content and impulse response. Virtual input and output meters provide ready indication of audio levels, and presets can be stored in a DAW-independent format that can be transferred to a different DAW.
Ruzza concluded, “The LXP plug-in sounds amazing, offers good value and is easy to use. As a result, you don’t have to be an ‘A-list’ session musician or big-budget producer or engineer to have access to the same high-quality reverb sounds they use.”
The Lexicon LXP Native Reverb Plug-In Bundle is Native only, and requires iLok authorization. It is currently available at a suggested retail price of $599.95.

Studer Vista 5 Digital Console Brings State-of-the-Art Sound To Famed Great Festival Hall in Austria
The Grosses Festspielhaus (Great Festival Hall), home to the famed Salzburg Festival--one of the most famous performance spectaculars in the world--has revamped its main audio system for the first time in two decades. The upgraded system includes a completely redesigned control room, featuring a Studer Vista 5 digital console. Celebrating the hall’s 50th and the festival’s 90th anniversaries, the Vista 5 was chosen for its optimum recording capabilities, with performance recordings in demand throughout the year.Working to achieve 5.1-quality sound in the control room, which is fairly small and oddly shaped due to the architectural aspects of the nearly century-old venue, the Vista 5 features a lightweight, high-performance compact operating surface, ideal for the small space. The console is rigged to be mobile and can be easily disconnected and reconnected and transported to areas beyond the hall for performances outside of the festival season.
The console is installed on a raised platform, which provides the sound engineer and director a direct view of the stage and orchestra pit. Mobile Studer D21m stage boxes are placed under the platform and interface, along with multi core cables connecting the existing audio house cable. The determined parameters for each show are stored utilizing a BSS London BLU-100, able to be recalled from the mixing surface immediately.
The Vista 5 has proven to be a reliable console that perfectly fits the needs of the Grosses Festspielhaus. With such an impressive talent lineup scheduled for this year’s Salzburg Festival, the live audience and those listening to the recordings will surely be amazed by the quality of sound offered by Vista 5.
The Salzburg Festival, a five-week event focusing on music and drama performances, begins July 27, 2011 and once again will feature highly regarded acts from around the world.

Soundcraft Vi1 – Smaller, Lower Priced, But Still With VistonicsTM, Lexicon FX, BSS EQ’s, And That Sound Quality
With the Soundcraft Vi Series now firmly established as a firm favourite digital desk on both the touring, broadcast and installed sound scenes, Soundcraft have taken this amazing platform to another, more affordable level with the release of the new Vi1 console.
Many users have asked for a smaller, lower-priced desk that still has the acclaimed VistonicsTM user interface, and of course the now-legendary optimal sound quality established with the Vi Series.
So here it is, the Soundcraft Vi1TM.
A complete standalone console package with 32 channels of analogue input to 27 analogue outputs, plus 6 digital inputs, 4 Stereo FX Returns and 6 digital outputs in one chassis. As standard, Input to mix capacity is 46chs, but by adding a stagebox (compatible with the existing Vi racks), simultaneous channel count increases to 64. Channels are routable to 24 multifunction busses, plus LR and Mono Mix busses.
Up to 8 of the busses can be configured as Matrix mixes, each with up to 16 sources.
The surface is just over a metre wide, and includes 16 motorised channel faders with fixed and user-definable layers, 8 output/VCA faders and 2 master faders.
What’s really cool about the Vi1 though, is the new Widescreen Vistonics interface, which will be instantly familiar to anyone who’s driven a Vi6 or Vi4, as well as retaining the same ‘walk-up’ user-friendliness of the other Vi consoles. This new development displays all parameters for 16 channels side by side, on a single 22” Vistonics touch screen. The upper half of the screen handles the Output section control as well as Cue List or Menu displays. Parameter control is via two rows of 16 rotary encoders. Exactly the same channel functionality as the Vi6 and Vi4 is available here, along with all the same core snapshot, talkback and monitoring facilities.
Naturally, the Vi1 inherits many of the facilities of its larger siblings, including Soundcraft FaderGlowTM, 4 stereo Lexicon effects engines, BSS Audio graphic EQs on all output busses, and integral dynamics on all channels.
The desk is compatible with Vi4 and Vi6 show files through the Virtual Vi offline editor, which is available as a free download from www.soundcraft.com.

Soundcraft Launches Stagebox For Vi and Si Series
The new Soundcraft Compact Stagebox for Vi and Si consoles offers a high density of I/O connections in only 4U of rack space. The modular unit offers as standard 32 mic/line inputs, 8 line outputs, 8 channels of AES/EBU outputs and 2 expansion slots for standard Studer D21m I/O cards. The D21m is the I/O architecture for Studer as well as Soundcraft digital mixing systems and allows connection to most popular digital formats, including CobraNet®, AVIOM A-Net®16 Ethersound ADAT and RockNet. A MADI recording interface can also be fitted to the expansion slots.
The Compact Stagebox is connected to the host console using either Cat-5 or Optical-fibre MADI, the same way as the larger 64 Mic/line Vi6 Stagebox is hooked up, and shares the same redundant MADI cable capability.
As well as the flexibility of the D21m option card interface, the Compact Stagebox also uses the same Mic/line I/O modules as found in the Soundcraft Vi1 console, and as a result it is possible to move or share modules between console and Stagebox, should a different configuration of I/O be required.
The unit comes complete with twin redundant power supplies, thermostatically-controlled fan cooling and full LED status monitoring. An 8ch GPIO interface is also provided.
The Compact Stagebox is ideal for existing owners of Vi consoles as a cost-effective method of expanding the input capability (for example in conjunction with the DSP upgrade available for Vi6, which adds 32 Mic/line inputs to the 64 of the basic console), or as a partner for the Vi1 and Si range of consoles providing cost-effective remote I/O capability in conjunction with the optional MADI interface cards available for those consoles.

Soundcraft Extends Digital Console Range with Si Compact 16
Positioned as the digital mixing solution for all sizes of sound company or user, the new Soundcraft Si Compact Series is a power-packed range of digital consoles that brings all the experience of Soundcraft’s digital mixing platforms to a very affordable price level for tour sound, corporate event, house of worship and theatre applications, amongst others.
Keith Watson, Harman’s Marketing Director for Mixers said, “We’ve had a fantastic reaction to the 24 fader model launched at PLASA in September. Being 19” rack mounted, the 16 is our response to massive demand from our clients in live sound including Houses of Worship, installed systems, theatres and corporate events.”
With full DSP functionality built-in to a small-footprint chassis, the Si Compact range provides up to 40 inputs to mix in 3 frame sizes. Motorized faders with patented Soundcraft FaderGlow™ operate on two layers, but the main difference from similarly priced mixers is the provision of a full encoder set for all the functions on a channel, from input gain through EQ and dynamics to bus controls.
Drawing on its bigger brothers, Soundcraft’s acclaimed Si Series, the new Si Compact packs powerful digital mixing facilities along with stunning Lexicon® effects into a trio of small footprint consoles available in 16, 24 or 32 mic/line input formats, with 4 stereo returns.
And for once, compact doesn’t mean compromise. No layering of the audio controls makes operation fast and simple, and with 4 separate Lexicon FX processors with dedicated FX busses in addition to the main mixes, and BSS Graphic EQ for every bus, you’ll never find yourself wishing you had more processing power.
Speaking of the launch, Andy Trott, Harman’s Vice President and General Manager for Mixing, Microphones & Headphones said, “Whilst over the past two years we’ve expanded our digital range with high- and mid-range extensions to the Vista, OnAir, Vi and Si Series, we’ve been determined to drive our product portfolio down into the sub $10,000 price points. Our strategy has always been to integrate no-compromise audio quality together with innovative, feature-rich specifications and an easy-to-use-and-learn, highly intuitive user interface. Si Compact is the result of 18 months of extremely focused and creative development and is particularly exciting as it’s so unique; it brings together so many professional features and technologies from across Harman Professional brands into a highly specified but yet super compact mixing platform at an unbelievably low price point.”
Legendary Soundcraft audio quality comes courtesy of EMMA Lite, the same DSP platform that has helped propel the larger Si Series to industry standard status and riders on events all around the world. Features like dedicated FX busses, 16 line outputs plus AES, an option card slot for MADI or other connectivity, a Global Mode for instant access to Pan, Gain and Filters, a colour touchscreen interface and FaderGlow™ equip Si Compact to easily handle a range of live sound mixing applications including bands, theatres and houses of worship.
Key Features:
• Frames with 16, 24 or 32 mono inputs and 4 stereo channels to mix
• 14 mono aux busses
• 4 FX busses
• 4 Matrix busses
• LRC Mix busses
• 4 Stereo Lexicon Effects engines
• 4 Mute Groups
• 4 assignable insert send/returns (24 and 32 models)

• Harman HiQnet integration
Trott adds, “I’m confident that the user community will be delighted with the Si Compact and the wide choice we now provide with Soundcraft and Studer mixing consoles. We now have the widest price-range of digital consoles in our history – that’s got to be good for engineers and audio companies!”

JBL Professional Debuts VERTEC Subcompact Suspension Accessories At ISE 2011
At ISE 2011, JBL Professional is introducing the latest suspension hardware accessories for its VERTEC® subcompact line arrays. The VERTEC hardware enables quick assembly of variable curvature vertical or modular constant-curvature horizontal line arrays. In addition to the standard VT4886-AF array frame for suspending up to 24 boxes, along with the VT4886-UB and –UB1 for supporting smaller groups of speakers, the line of equipment now includes the VT4886-SF Short Frame, the VT4886-HB Horizontal Bar, and VT4886-DF88 and VT4886-DF89 Downfill Frames.
The VERTEC Subcompact System is specifically designed to be one of the most versatile tools in a portable sound rental company’s inventory. Application flexibility also ensures VT4886 and VT4883 elements provide effective sound design tools for performance audio facility system designers.
“Since its launch a year ago, the VT4886 has quickly become known as an all-purpose type of loudspeaker with many different uses, from single standalone fill speakers to complex, mixed full-range and subwoofer arrays,” said Paul Bauman, Director of Tour Sound Product and Application Engineering, JBL Professional. “The introduction of these new suspension accessories will complement this speaker’s flexibility by opening up a world of new application possibilities from a sound design perspective. In many ways, the accessories ‘make the product’ for a loudspeaker as versatile as the VT4886.”
The VT4886-SF Short Frame suspends VT4886 arrays by coupling to existing integrated hardware on the VERTEC enclosures, and works well when limited space is available above or behind the array due to wall surfaces or venue obstructions. Weighing just 5.6 kg (12.8 lb), the machined- aluminum frame with receiver blocks is fitted with steel quick-release pins and restraining lanyards. A pullback point enables attachment to the bottom of an array to enable radical downward angles. The VT4886-HB Horizontal Bar can suspend up to six horizontally-oriented VT4886 line array elements, enabling the assembly of constant-coverage arrays that are useful for center fill and other applications.
The VT4886-DF88 and VT4886-DF89 Downfill Frames each support up to eight VT4886 subcompact line array elements. The VT4886-DF88 connects the elements beneath midsize VT4888 full-range or VT4882 subwoofer arrays, while the VT4886-DF89 suspends the elements beneath full-size VT4889/VT4889-1 full-range or VT4880/VT4880A subwoofer arrays. The two strong, lightweight downfill frames weigh in at 11.3 kg (25 lb) and 13.4 kg (29.5 lb), respectively.

JBL Professional Introduces Its Best EON Loudspeaker Ever At ISE 2011: The New EON515XT
JBL Professional today introduced its EON515XT active loudspeaker. As the flagship of the iconic JBL powered portable speaker collection, the EON515XT was engineered for durability, high performance and ease of use. JBL has extended the reach of the current EON technology by improving input sensitivity, lowering the noise floor, adding user selectable EQ control and re-voicing the system for peak performance and enhanced audio precision.
“In the development of our PRX600 Series we’ve learned and implemented quite a few things that enhanced system performance,” said Richard Ruse, JBL Director of Marketing for Portable PA. “We knew we could do the same for the EON515XT and quite frankly, we couldn’t wait to do it. Through amplifier optimization and restructuring of the gain stages, we’ve increased the maximum SPL from 129 dB to 132 dB. We’ve made the system quieter when idling and re-voiced the system for a more even spectral balance. I think it’s the most musical EON we have ever built.”
The 2-way EON515XT incorporates a JBL 2414H high-frequency neodymium compression driver and a 15-inch JBL 265F-1 Differential Drive® dual-voice-coil woofer perfectly matched to a proprietary Crown® Class D amplifier. The system has been re-voiced from previous models for better clarity and frequency balance and now delivers a stout 132dB maximum SPL. “We’ve raised the bar dramatically,” noted Ruse.
The input sensitivity has been increased by 10dB to accommodate keyboards, musical instruments, drum machines and lower output sound reinforcement and DJ mixers. The EON15XT now offers user-adjustable EQ with individual bass and treble controls and a simplified 3-channel mixer configuration—an especially beneficial live performance feature that allows users to plug in multiple instruments and microphones.
Built to take the rigors of the road, the JBL EON515XT has been restyled for discretion with a tough, molded black enclosure, black metal grille, black JBL badge, and charcoal EON grille logo. The EON515XT can be pole-mounted on a subwoofer or tripod stand using its 36 mm pole-mount socket, used in a floor monitor position or flown using its integrated M10 suspension points. It offers two 1/4-inch TRS inputs, one combination XLR/TRS input and an XLR loop-through output for connecting another EON speaker, recording device or for routing to an external devices. Weighing just 32.5 pounds, the EON515XT features multiple grip points designed for comfort, safety and balance.

• 215s dual 15-band graphic equalizer
• 131s single 31-band graphic equalizer
• 266xs compressor/gate
• 166xs compressor/limiter/gate
• 234s/234xs stereo 2-way/mono 3-way/mono 4-way crossover
• 223s/223xs stereo 2-way/mono 3-way crossover
“Our newly updated EQs, compressors and crossovers demonstrate that even industry-standard workhorse products can be improved as technology evolves,” said Rob Urry, President, Harman Music Group. “These dbx components provide the highest levels of performance and reliability for live sound, installed sound and recording studios.”
dbx Graphic Equalizers
The dbx 231s dual 31-band, 215s dual 15-band and 131s single 31-band graphic equalizers are designed for exceptional sound and rugged reliability, to meet the needs of the most demanding sound reinforcement and studio environments. Each offers 1/3-octave constant Q equalization with switchable boost/cut ranges of ±6 or ±12dB, with a ±12dB input gain range.
The 231s, 215s and 131s all feature 4-segment LED ladder meters that provide ready indication of output levels, and their 20mm nonconductive sliders enable smooth, quiet operation. All models have XLR and 1/4-inch TRS inputs and outputs, and offer a frequency response of <10Hz to >50kHz with greater than 108dB dynamic range.
dbx Compressors
dbx invented the compressor, and the 266xs compressor/gate and 166xs compressor/limiter/gate continue the dbx heritage of sonic excellence. Both feature patented Overeasy® compression technology that transparently smooths out fluctuating vocal and instrumental levels. Both models offer exclusive dbx AutoDynamic™ scalable program-dependent attack and release controls that continually adjust the actual attack and release times to match the program material, rather than standard compressors that only provide pre-set attack and release functionality.
The 266xs and 166xs also enable classic “hard-knee” compression, and allow users to manually and precisely adjust threshold, ratio, attack, release and output gain. New gate timing algorithms ensure the smoothest release characteristics available. The 266xs and 166xs can be used in stereo or dual-mono mode, and include balanced inputs and outputs with XLR and ¼-inch TRS connectors, along with a TRS sidechain insert.
dbx Crossovers
A multi-way speaker system can only sound as good as its crossover – and the dbx 234s/234xs stereo 2/way/mono 3-way/mono 4/way crossover and 223s/223xs stereo 2-way/mono 3-way crossover ensure that multi-way speaker systems will perform at their best. Both models utilize precision, industry-standard Linkwitz-Riley filters to separate the audio signal and direct the correct frequencies to the loudspeaker drivers, enabling a system’s amplifiers to operate more efficiently with lower distortion. The result is cleaner, clearer and better sound.
The dual-channel 234s/234xs and 223s/223xs offer independent output gain controls for precise level matching, output phase inversion, a 40Hz low-cut filter, selectable stereo/mono operation and low-frequency summing for the subwoofer output and many additional useful features. The 234s and 223s feature 1/4-inch TRS inputs and outputs, while the 234xs and 223xs provide XLR connections.
dbx is a unit of Harman International Industries, Incorporated (www.harman.com).

Real Ethernet Backbone Pays Interoperability Dividend As Crown Audio Debuts “Powered By Crown” Apple® iPad Control Application At ISE 2011
Underscoring the comprehensive integration value of its long-term commitment to a standards- based Ethernet backbone for its winning amplifier lineup, Crown Audio today announced the addition of the “Powered By Crown” iPad/iPhone App, designed to provide users with enhanced control and configuration of its amplifiers. The new application can be deployed to control and monitor amplifiers by setting the basic control panels on an amplifier or handle a complete setup through Harman HiQnet™ System Architect™.
The new application benefits both touring professionals and integrators as it can be used to control numerous lines of Crown amplifiers including I-Tech, I-Tech HD, CTs, and Macro Tech I Series amplifiers. Users can instantly connect by plugging their amplifiers into a wireless router. The app can be deployed on two, four and eight channel amplifiers. Users can now create a custom control panel in HiQnet System Architect, save it and directly import it onto the app using iTunes. Sound engineers now also have full capability to setup, troubleshoot, and monitor systems remotely.
“Building amplifiers that can operate on an Ethernet network provides us with unlimited expansion opportunities and the addition of an iPad application couples our industry-leading amplifier technology with control and monitoring capabilities that make system control infinitely simpler,” stated Marc Kellom, Director, Marketing for Crown.
A strategic long-term commitment to Ethernet by Crown means that users have access to everything that is based on the technology. Its speed, price point, superior reliability, and wide deployment as a fundamental make it the best choice for enhancing the capabilities of amplifiers on a network.
Inputs, routing, load monitoring, metering, thermal conditions and levels are all controllable through the app. Crown’s unique commitment to Ethernet technology for cost efficiency and seamless integration makes this application simple to deploy and make it possible for both legacy and future Crown products to offer the same compatibility with the iPad/iPhone application.
This application will also be compatible with the iPod Touch and is now available on Apple’s iTunes store.
