Tianjin Meijiang Convention Center Upgrades Performance Audio System With Harman Line

Under construction for four years to completely renovate its concert hall appearance and sound system, the Tianjin Concert Hall has installed a complete Harman sound system with hopes to continue entertaining the masses as one of the most popular concert halls and convention centers in China.  The 2010 Summer Davos Forum was the first large-scale event to experience the new Harman system.

The hall installed JBL Control 300 series ceiling speakers, Crown CT and I-Tech series amplifiers, a BSS BLU-800 digital audio matrix and a Soundcraft Si3 digital console.  “The Harman professional equipment provides a great audio standard for all of our attendees and visitors,” said the Manager from Tianjin Taida company who owns the management of the Convention Center,“We are happy to offer top-of-the-line facilities for any international and local event.”

The convention center spans 230,000 square meters, consisting of modern exhibition halls and various conference halls that can each accommodate up to 2000 people.  The space also includes an 800-square-meter VIP Hall, 10 300-square-meter meeting rooms and several additional medium-sized conference rooms, reception rooms and negotiation rooms.

“Installing the Harman equipment was vital to the future plans of our convention center,” continued the Manager.  “With such a comprehensive, quality sound system, we foresee being chosen by many high-end national and international conference and exhibitions in the near future.”

In the future, a series of conferences such as the China Tourism Industry Festival, Tianjin Housing Fair, Free Trade Zone Auto Show and International Mining Conference will also be held in the convention center. The Meijiang Convention Center adds new charm for the city of Tianjin, not only with its beautiful and elegant appearance, but also with amazing sound capabilities.

Conan Gets Two Studer Vista 9 Digital Consoles For Audio Mixing

Conan, the new late-night talk, music and entertainment show hosted by award-winning comedic talent Conan O’Brien showcases O’Brien’s tremendous versatility as a performer as well as his eclectic tastes in musical guest artists--not to mention his all-star house band led by guitarist Jimmy “V” Vivino. To handle that kind of performance diversity, Conan needed mix consoles for both music and production dialog that could keep up with the fast timing and quick turns of the show, and that’s exactly what the two Studer Vista 9 digital consoles specifically installed for the program at the Warner Bros Studio Facilities’ Stage 15, in Burbank, California provide. Studer Vista 9 consoles are used in both the Music Mix control room and in the Production Audio mix control room, both of which were designed and equipped by Sound Design Corporation.

“Conan’s shows are a huge mix of talk, stand-up, sketch comedy, remote locations and live music, and they’ll go from one to the other in a heartbeat,” observes 6-time Emmy® Award winner Paul Sandweiss, President of Sound Design Corporation, and Sound Designer for Conan, as well as O’Brien’s stint as host of The Tonight Show Featuring Conan O’Brien. “The show is so fast-paced that, unlike most late-night talk shows, in addition to main production mixer Mike Stock and music mixer Brian Lodato, we also have a dedicated sound effects mixer, Rob Ohlandt. The consoles for this show have to be able to keep up.”

That’s exactly what the Studer Vista 9 consoles do. Sandweiss had specified the Studio Vista 8 console in the control rooms for The Tonight Show Featuring Conan O’Brien and was completely satisfied with that experience. “We were totally impressed with the performance of the Vista 8, and the Vista 9 brings even more features and functionality to this show,” he says. Conan is a pretty packed show in terms of how many I/Os we need to cover dialog, sound effects and music, and the Vista 9 has the capability to share console cores, meaning that we get 96 channels of digital cross-connectivity without giving up any of the I/O in either console. We created a common MADI stream between the two consoles so we can have two hard drive recorders running all the time backing each other up. It’s true redundancy--the record paths go to and from both consoles, it’s great to have that kind of backup protection. We can do any fixes from either room.”

Sandweiss expresses his happiness with the other new Vista 9 features, such as the inclusion of P&G faders; the unique HISTORY metering mode that records events such as overloads in the audio path of each channel and highlights them in red on the channel waveform, allowing the operator to review which channel had such an event, up to 30 seconds after it occurred; user-definable FaderGlow™ and even the new, more steeply raked design of the work surface. “The Vista 9 sounds great, works great and looks great,” he says. “It’s everything you could want in a console for a complex show like this.”

Clair Brothers Audio Systems Hoists JBL VerTec Line Array System At New York City’s Beacon Theatre

Professional audio design and installation company, Clair Brothers Audio Systems, has installed a complete JBL VerTec line array system in New York’s famous Beacon Theatre.  The installation marks the third audio retrofit of an MSG-owned venue by Clair Brothers, which has also installed JBL VerTec line arrays in New York’s Radio City Music Hall and the Chicago Theatre.

Part of a $16 million full venue renovation, Clair Brothers relied on JBL’s new DPDA-equipped powered line array elements, featuring AES digital audio, BSS Omnidrive HD signal processing, and HiQnet compatibility. A total of 16 JBL VerTec VT4888DP-DA powered midsize line array elements with DrivePack® technology are included in left-right arrays of eight per side, with three VT4880A fullsize arrayable subwoofers per side. In addition, two VT4888 midsize line array elements and two VT4882 midsize arrayable subwoofers provide top balcony fill, with four VT4487ADP-DA powered compact line array elements providing down fill.

“We’ve had a lot of great experience with the VerTec line arrays, not only in terms of performance performance, but also with consistent positive feedback and requests from clients,” stated Jim Devenney, senior engineer, Clair Brothers.  “With the success of the Radio City Music Hall and Chicago Theatre installations, it was a simple decision for us to continue relying on VerTec.”

The VerTec arrays comprise the first in-house PA system that has ever been installed in the Beacon, according to MSG Entertainment / Radio City Music Hall Head Audio Engineer, Tom Arrigoni.  Previously, acts would load in, set up and sound check their own sound equipment hours before the show opened. “With the new system, our clients can leave their own PA’s on the truck and simply utilize our in-house system, saving time and energy. Touring engineers have told me that our venues now have some of the best sound quality and acoustics in the world,” Arrigoni said.

“MSG prides itself on providing the best in sound and entertainment to the customer in every venue we have,” Arrigoni continued. “No touring sound engineer would have the time, during a load-in, that we had while installing and perfecting this system.”

RTÉ Radio Adds Its 19th Studer OnAir 3000

When Ireland’s national broadcaster, RTÉ Radio upgraded its Studio 10 sports studio recently, it took the network’s tally of Studer OnAir 3000 digital consoles to 19. While 10 are located in the main RTE campus, one occupies an RTE studio in a nearby shopping centre, and the other eight are distributed over five regional studio centres.

The broadcaster’s relationship with Studer extends back many years to the A80 tape machines, which were in use in RTÉ Radio for many years, and over the past six years they have systematically upgraded all the main radio studios, replacing various analogue consoles with the OnAir 3000 series — Studio 10 being the last in line.

RTÉ Radio’s resident studio guru, Seamus Power, drew up the initial list of requirements for the new desk and the contract for the installation was awarded to local company, Audiohead Ltd, who have extensive experience in installing OnAir 3000s in RTÉ Radio.

This studio is used at weekends for fast-moving sports coverage, featuring numerous reports/commentaries from many locations — both national and international.

During the working week, Studio 10 is mainly used for production, pre-recording etc, and is occasionally pressed into use for live programmes that feature an extended number of guests (such as election coverage, and recently, the Budget).

To meet the many varied requirements, the new OnAir 3000 has been configured for 56 line inputs, 48 line outputs, 16 mic inputs, eight AES/EBU inputs and outputs, 36 faders, two monitor/talkback modules (one for sound operator, one for producer) and two XL modules.

Commented John Brew, RTÉ Radio’s Senior Broadcast Engineer, with prime responsibility for special projects, “The features we were looking for were flexibility, ease-of use and reliability. This is a standard console throughout our studios, which facilitates user-familiarity, technical support, and the supply of spare parts. But we also like the features of the SCore Live DSP engine, including eight stereo groups/VCA masters, 48 N-x busses and the use of XL modules.

“Everything is now integrated into the OnAir 3000,” Brew says. “For example, talkback between studio and control room has also been greatly simplified.”

The new installation allows RTÉ Radio to work with up to 20 external incoming lines (with respective clean feeds) which the RTÉ man says is about 14 more than was previously available in Studio 10. “These ‘externals’ are actually outputs of our main routing switcher, so ultimately they could be coming from anywhere via ISDN — or from other studios. The respective clean feeds are fed back out and function as inputs to the routing switcher, and thus can be switched to anywhere.”

All RTÉ’s studios use Krone architecture with wiring of all studio inputs and outputs, as well as all console inputs and outputs, wired through the jumpered blocks. This enables any future alterations to be easily implemented.

As part of the upgrade, new control room furniture was manufactured specifically to cater for the various OnAir 3000 surface modules. Matching cabinets were also built for the Studer rack-mount equipment and to house various PC’s. As a result, from an ergonomic point of view, the working conditions for production staff are greatly improved.

The upgraded infrastructure also incorporates a new studio table that features two presenter positions and six guest positions. Musical groups can also be accommodated making Studio 10 the largest of RTÉ Radio’s everyday ‘working’ studios (although, there is also a very large studio to cater for orchestras, choirs etc).

In summary John Brew states, “The fitting of the OnAir 3000 not only brings Studio 10 into line with our other studios, but in fact it now surpasses the capacity of most of them.”

Studer Vista 9 and Soundcraft Vi1 Digital Consoles to be Installed in Moscow Conservatory’s Great Hall

As part of its current restoration, the Moscow Conservatory has purchased a Studer Vista 9 digital console for recording, post-production and broadcast from its Great Hall, as well as a Soundcraft Vi1 digital console for multipurpose use, including at front of house when required.

The Moscow Conservatory was founded in 1866 by famous Russian musician Nikolai Rubinstein. It has established itself as one of the world’s most renowned institutions of musical education. In 1940, it was named after the great Russian composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky.

The Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory opened in April 1901. It has been admired by artists and performers all over the world for its remarkable acoustics and elegant architecture. The famous pipe organ of the Great Hall was built by a legendary Paris organ builder A. Cavaille-Coll and was recognized at the Paris World Exhibition of 1900 as one of the best organs in the world--the organ has never been changed since that time. With a seating capacity of 1,737, the Great Hall has hosted the world’s finest orchestras, ensembles and soloists, as well as international festivals and competitions including the prestigious Tchaikovsky Competition for young musicians.

The Moscow Conservatory purchased a 42-fader Vista 9 console that will be utilized for recording, post-production and direct transmissions. It will also have a connection position for OB vans. Building on the successful Vista platform, the Vista 9 takes the operator experience to a higher level, supplementing the popular Vistonics™ interface with radical and innovative TFT-based metering, FaderGlow™ and numerous other innovations. The new metering gives precision feedback on signal status, displaying mono — right through to 7.1 — signals in the upper section of the screen, while the lower portion can show bus assignment or for surround channels an image of the surround composite, providing a clear and easily understandable display of the surround signal and an innovative History mode where each channel’s recent behaviour can be displayed for up to 30 seconds.

Alexey Pogarsky, sound engineer from the Studio of Moscow Conservatory, explains why they chose the Vista 9 and Vi1: “For over 40 years both for Soviet and Russian sound engineers, the word ‘Studer’ has been a symbol of robust equipment with the highest sound quality, working flexibility & excellent design. The Conservatory has had A80 & A810 tape machines & also an A962 mixer by Studer. It has always been a pleasure to work with them. This equipment is still used today and we still use some of it quite extensively!

“Before we chose the Vista 9, we also looked into some other widely known digital and analog consoles. And as a result we found that Vista 9 is the best option. It is very important for our work to have high-quality microphone inputs with great Studer transformers. The analog split out for each input, just in the mic preamp alone, is a very useful thing too as we are going to work with DSD and high sample rates. The working process with the famous Vistonics interface is very similar to an analog mixer. The Vistonics interface and high sound quality were the most important reasons for choosing the Soundcraft Vi1. Now we will have a unified working interface and great sound quality for multipurpose use.”

“We are honored that the Moscow Conservatory has chosen Studer and Soundcraft consoles as key components of the Great Hall’s restoration,” said Jarle Felin, Studer Sales Director. ”The decision was based on a rigorous specification and evaluation process that lasted for a substantial time, so we are especially gratified that the Vista 9 and Vi1 were determined to be the best consoles for their requirements.”

The consoles were sold through Audio Solutions, the systems integrator of the Moscow Conservatory project. Sergey Dolgov, head of the audio department of Audio Solutions, adds: “We consider it a great honor to be a partner of Studer in Russia as Vista is really the best digital mixing system in the world for musical studios, broadcast and live shows at any level by ratio of quality/reliability/price. Having installed many Vista systems, we have been pleasantly surprised by the highest stability of work Studer consoles offer, even when being used 24/7/365. I often can hear from our customers that operating a Studer console is as easy as operating an analog console. With all this flexibility and almost boundless opportunities, the Vista system can solve any challenge.”

JBL VLA Line Arrays Hit A Home Run At Harbor Park

At Harbor Park in Norfolk, Virginia, home to Minor League Baseball’s Norfolk Tides, a new JBL VLA line array system gave the team’s stadium a sonic refresher that both vastly improved the sound on the field and did so very cost-effectively. Two clusters, each containing six JBL VLA 901 speakers with 90-degree horizontal horn coverage patterns offer fans exceptional sound and high intelligibility while staying within both the team’s budget and the physical limitations of the park.

“It was challenging because we could only work within the space that was already there,” said Tom “T” Brockenbrough, Project Manager for Onyx AudioVisual, the systems integrator for the project. Due to budget constraints, the system design and installation teams replacing the PA system were required to use the same sofitted set-backs in the outfield wall of Harbor Park, which was completed in 1993. Furthermore, the soffits could not be accessed from above, eliminating the possibility of using a crane to lift PA components in; they would have to be loaded from the side. “Time and budget pressures meant we couldn’t run conduit and install a distributed audio system, which would have been the ideal situation,” Brockenbrough said.

Gary T. White, Senior Associate at acoustical consultant firm Wrightson, Johnson, Haddon & Williams (WJHW), concurred. “Budget and time frame were major considerations. We started discussing the replacement late in the 2009 season. The desire to have a new system in time for the 2010 season was probably the most important factor in system choice, with cost a close second. Even with a proper budget, our estimates couldn’t rationalize designing and installing a distributed system in less than eight months.”

However, White had an inspiration: “I had done a lot of other minor league and major league stadiums and really wanted to try a line array for an outfield cluster,” he said. “WJHW had used VLA line arrays other projects and I was working on some football stadiums with end-zone clusters, so the VLA’s for Harbor Park were an easy choice.”

White specified the VLA 901 enclosure, part of the JBL VLA Series line arrays, which are based on the same advanced engineering used in JBL’s VERTEC® Series line array systems. Designed specifically for permanent installation applications where even coverage, high intelligibility and very high sound-pressure levels are required, the VLA Series includes six large-format horn-loaded modules with three horizontal horn coverage patterns (30, 60 and 90 degrees) in both mid-power and high-power configurations. This modular horn-loaded concept incorporating JBL’s Precision Directivity® series technology provides system designers additional flexibility to vary the horizontal pattern within a vertical array.

“Given the constraints we had to work with, the JBL speakers were the best possible solution,” Brockenbrough said. “They were installed in the same spaces as the old PA, but they brought so much more power to the stadium’s sound. We were testing them in place and they’re incredibly powerful, yet the sound was still highly articulate, with very even coverage and very good frequency response. There is no other box out there with that much output, that can throw that far, and still sound great.”

Flyleaf Finds Innovative Uses for Soundcraft Digital Mixing Consoles on Their Current U.S. Tour

Platinum-selling rock band Flyleaf has been touring constantly in 2010, building upon the success of their Memento Mori and Flyleaf albums and hit songs like “Again,” “I’m So Sick” and “All Around Me.” Now on the second leg of Flyleaf’s “Unite and Fight” tour, Rich Caldwell (front of house engineer) and Sean Patrick (monitor engineer) rely on Soundcraft Vi6™ and Si3 digital mixing consoles, respectively.

“Earlier this year we were able to secure a production budget to carry consoles, so we started shopping for a desk to rent,” says Rich Caldwell, Flyleaf’s front of house engineer. “We wanted to go analog at the time, but it’s just not practical for a multi-band bill and limited trailer space. After several lengthy conversations with Vince Kapchinski, the owner of Backstage Sound and Lighting [of Bryan, Texas], we decided to take out the Vi6. He kept raving about how ‘analog’ the Vi6 digital sounded and insisted that we give it a try.”

For the first leg of this tour, the Flyleaf crew used the Vi6 at monitor world.  “We really wanted the band to hear what we were spending their money on,” Caldwell notes. “They are very frugal so it was important to us that they felt like they were getting their money’s worth. They immediately fell in love. It’s one thing for a bunch of engineers to geek-out about the minute differences in desks, but it was really rewarding when the band could really hear and ‘feel’ the difference that this console makes. The desk just sounds real.”

“The Soundcraft definitely has a warmer tone,” says Sean Patrick, Flyleaf’s monitor engineer. “There is an ‘openness’ to the console that we haven’t found with other digitals. The mix is very reactive and gives you the feeling that all the energy they put into the performance comes out in the final mix. Plus, the onboard Lexicon reverbs are very realistic, so it allows me to build a big spatial environment in the in-ears without it sounding like I just dumped a bunch of reverb on the mix.”

The next step, Caldwell continues, was to transition towards creating a virtual soundcheck. “I really wanted to have the precision of building my show file on studio monitors before the tour started so I knew it was right from the beginning,” he says. “Plus, we wanted to show the band a real return-on-investment by freeing them up from a traditional soundcheck and use that time to write and record on stage.”

This coincided with the band’s discussions with its record label about recording a live show for future DVD or CD release. “They originally wanted a recording truck or mobile setup to come out, but we felt confident that we could capture the audio ourselves and then just hand them a hard drive of the whole tour,” Caldwell says. “Using existing budget, we purchased a Pro Tools HD rig and added a MADI-to-Digilink interface. That instantly turned the desk into a 64-track mobile studio with full virtual soundcheck capability. We hadn’t seen anyone else use this setup before and we were eager to take it for a test drive. We captured a few shows at the end of the previous tour and then took the desk home during the break to start building FOH mixes from Pro Tools. The Vi6 went to FOH mix-ready without ever seeing a band member.”

For the second leg of the tour, Sean Patrick had to swap from the Vi6 to the Si3. “I figured out a way to bus the tracks out analog from the Vi6 directly into the Si3, so the day before we left for tour we sat both consoles next to each other at the shop and I built all my in-ear mixes. Next time we can add a MADI line down the snake from FOH and hit both desks for virtual soundcheck simultaneously with only one Pro Tools computer. All we need to add to the Si3 would be the MADI option card. I was pleasantly surprised to hear no drop-off in the sound quality with the Si3 coming from the Vi6,” Patrick says. “That is pretty amazing considering the little desk is about one-quarter of the price.”

Caldwell adds that virtual soundcheck has saved about two hours per day. “At the beginning of this tour it yielded an unexpected benefit--the band was able to write and record an entire EP on the Vi6/Pro Tools rig during the time previously allotted for soundcheck. We were able to load up the producer’s [Mark Lewis] show file, have the band play their regular live rig and capture the whole performance on HD. He was floored at how well it worked and the band never got bogged down in technical delays. Almost everything on the EP was recorded on the Vi6. It really has fantastic preamps and A/D-D/A converters. The EP will be released in December so you can listen for yourself.”

The EP, Remember To Live, is available in stores or via download.

Mastermind Production Group Inc. Adds JBL VERTEC® Subcompact Line Arrays to Rental Inventory

A growing audio/video/lighting contractor and event production company in southern California specializing in live events, installation, rentals and sales, Mastermind Production Group Inc. has added JBL VERTEC® subcompact line array loudspeakers to its roster of live sound equipment.

Recently, Mastermind purchased 18 JBL VERTEC VT4886 subcompact line array elements and nine VT4883 subcompact arrayable subwoofers to add to its rental inventory. Other JBL speakers in use by Mastermind include VRX932LA-1 Constant Curvature powered loudspeakers, eight 18-inch VRX918S subwoofers, SRX712M stage monitors, and AC25 speakers for use as area fill speakers. The company will be adding more VERTEC VT4886 and VT4883 speakers by the end of December.

“We are a regional sound company in Orange County, California. We pride ourselves on having great gear and doing great work,” said Chad Griswold, President of Mastermind Production Group Inc. “We do a lot of church and school events, functions for the City of Anaheim, as well as business and corporate events of all types.”

“We strive to distinguish ourselves by providing the best possible sound systems to our customers,” continued Griswold. “When we decided to upgrade some of our systems, we looked at a number of loudspeaker options before choosing the new JBL VERTEC Subcompact models for their manageable size, clarity and intelligibility over a wide coverage area, voice-matching among different models and ease of installation.”

“Our first event with the VERTEC line arrays was a 2,000-seat outdoor Easter service. We’ve done numerous projects since then, and in every case, the VERTEC line arrays have been fantastic. They’re the type of product where once they’re hung properly, the speakers do the rest of the work. You don’t have to tweak them at all.”

Griswold singled out a recent application at the Lutheran Educators Conference in Palm Desert, California. “The Conference included a full praise band, a 30-piece choir and various presenters, with about 1,000 people in attendance. The VERTEC line arrays performed absolutely great, as expected, and were a pleasure to set up. I entered the venue and speaker information into the JBL Line Array Calculator setup software, and what I heard coming out of the hang was spot-on with the coverage and levels that were represented on my computer screen. I only had to adjust a couple of frequencies on my main graphic EQ, primarily to compensate for acoustical issues in the room. ESCO Communications Upgrades Audio System at University of Notre Dame Purcell Pavilion With JBL Loudspeakers

As part of a $24.7 million renovation to the home of University of Notre Dame basketball and volleyball, ESCO Communications, Inc. recently completed a JBL loudspeaker system installation in the Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center in South Bend, Indiana.  The nearly 10,000-seat arena, which opened its doors in 1968, is now a state-of-the-art facility for all of the student-athletes and fans to enjoy.

ESCO installed 16 JBL PD5322/95 full-range loudspeakers, eight PD5125 low-frequency loudspeakers and 12 ASB6128 high-power subwoofers for the main system, with five AC18 2-way loudspeakers for club level seating, eight AM5212/64 2-way loudspeakers and an additional four AC18’s for the scoreboard and VRX928 small-scale constant curvature line array loudspeakers for various performances.

“From the minute you walk into the Joyce Center until the minute you walk out, everything you hear is HARMAN,” said John Nonemaker of ESCO.  “The JBL team was always on hand and very helpful as we perfected the system to ensure the best sound fill for the Fighting Irish players and fans.”

The arena’s previously all-analog control booth was renovated to support digital processing for Masses, commencement, award ceremonies and live performances, as well as athletic events.  The control booth hosts a HARMAN-based arsenal with a completely custom Soundcraft Vi4 digital console, 27 Crown I-T5000HD and eight I-T9000HD amplifiers and BSS BLU-160 and 320 signal processing units. HARMAN’s HiQnet™ System Architect™ was utilized throughout the arena to easily bring all the sound elements together.

With a renovation on such a grand scale, coordinating every contractor’s time was one of the largest and most complicated tasks.  When the arena was ready for the sound system installation, the deadline for construction completion was two weeks away.  ESCO completed the vast installation within two weeks with more than 1,000 man-hours logged in the books.

“The JBL speakers bring a very noticeable difference to the arena, especially after replacing the extensive horn system, which was previously the main source of music and public address,” continued Nonemaker.

“With a more powerful and better sounding system, fans not only receive a better show, but the university also provides top-of-the-line multi-purpose facilities for all to enjoy.” stated Paco Bayer, lead A/V technician, Athletic Department/Technical Services, University of Notre Dame. “Part of the challenge in revamping the facility was to ensure the system for each unique event was flexible, easy to turn on and off.  HARMAN was very helpful with the customization of our arena and we had complete confidence in the system, come opening day.”

DJ Swivel On The Lexicon® PCM Native Reverb Plug-In Bundle: “The Lexicon PCM suite is the only plug-in reverb I can put up against a $20,000 hardware reverb – and it’ll hold its own.”

DJ Swivel is a mixer, engineer, and producer who has worked with hip-hop, R&B and pop artists including Beyonce, Fabolous, Jay-Z, Mariah Carey, Diddy, Britney Spears, Kanye West and others. He is also co-founder/co-owner of Silverbridge Media, a music publishing company for film and TV music.

DJ Swivel uses the Lexicon PCM Native Reverb Plug-In Bundle and prizes it for its sound quality and flexibility. “I’ve worked with the Lexicon 960L hardware reverb (no longer available) for several years, and was never able to find a plug-in reverb that I warmed up to. They always added a certain amount of brittleness to a vocal that I didn’t care for,” Swivel said. “It wasn’t until I listened to the PCM Native Reverb Plug-In Bundle that I felt confident in switching over to plug-in versions.”

“I mix almost exclusively in the box (on a computer), but until now I was never able to find a plug-in reverb solution because, in my opinion none of them ever sounded very good,” added Swivel. “As a result, I’d come to rely on the Lexicon 960L even though it always had to be patched into my computer mixing setup. For me, the PCM Native Reverb Plug-In Bundle is great because it’s so convenient. It completely eliminates the necessity of having to recall settings for a mix—the sound I want is there, instantly.”

“I move around studios quite often, so the Lexicon plug-in just makes life easier,” Swivel noted. “It’s one less thing to think about. No one wants to be fooling with settings and knobs when they could be creating music.”

The Lexicon PCM Native Reverb Plug-In Bundle is designed to work with popular DAWs like Pro Tools and Logic, as well as with any other VST®, Audio Unit™ or RTAS®-compatible platform. Compatible with Windows® Vista, XP and 7 and Macintosh® computers, it offers seven unique Lexicon’s plug-ins including Vintage Plate, Plate, Hall, Room, Random Hall, Concert Hall and Chamber, along with hundreds of presets including classics from Lexicon’s extensive library of sounds.

Its intuitive user interface provides ready access to key parameters, with a graphical real-time full-color display that illustrates all key sonic parameters. Virtual input and output meters provide ready indication of audio levels, and presets can be stored in a DAW-independent format that can be transferred to a different DAW.

“I’m impressed when things sound great.” Swivel concluded, “The Lexicon PCM suite is the only plug-in reverb I can put up against a $20,000 hardware reverb – and it’ll hold its own. No other plug-in reverb I’m aware of can match the transparency of the PCM Native Reverb Plug-In Bundle.”

Gert Sanner Tours Deep Purple on Soundcraft Vi1™

As Deep Purple continue their tour through Germany and France, their long-serving FOH engineer Gert Sanner has taken the opportunity to transfer his show mix from his trusty Soundcraft Vi6 digital console to the smaller footprint of the new Vi1.

An early adopter of the Vi6 (since when he has regularly provided technical support to sales and rental company, SSE Group), Sanner was keen to move his show files to the Vi1 and prove the process in a real-world environment.

“The purpose was to create show files that would work on any Vi console,” he stated, with the end goal of purchasing a Vi1 for the band. Fortunately, the show transfer has proved 100% successful.

The features that originally persuaded Sanner to adopt this route were not only the Vi1’s compact footprint but the analogue inputs on the rear of the console. “This feature is great for the festival shows we do all over the world. It gives me the chance to use either the optical multis or analogue inputs from the house multis — providing the flexibility for all situations we would run into.”

Size became an important consideration for more reasons than one. “As a five-piece rock band Deep Purple only uses 26 inputs (and four effects) so the Vi1 has ample capacity. For us it is also important that the desk [which measures just 394mm x 1034mm x 711mm] fits on an aircraft, and that I can take it as excess baggage.”

Having now completed his rigorous trials, the FOH engineer declares that he has been able to tick every box. “It was important to be sure that the Vi1 would work on the road and to discover whether there were any compatibility issues or areas for improvement. I did this by demoing it to people with an interest — and I’m pleased to report that everything worked 100%.

“We are now waiting for Soundcraft’s new [compact] stagebox — which will enable digital tie-line usage — along with some digital I/O cards and I will be ready to move onto the Vi1 in the New Year. Sonically it is just the same as the Vi6.”

Although his discovery of the Vi1 won’t mean that the sound man is about to turn his back on the Vi6, he remains unequivocal about its diminutive offspring. “This is a real Vi — in fact it contains a few features that I almost prefer to those on the bigger desks…and it fits on a plane! The encoder layout is great and for the monitor guys the encoder row can have multiple jobs at once.

“It sounds great and weighs nothing — and will definitely close a gap in the market. I can’twait to stick it on the plane to Mexico!”

Logic Systems Deploys JBL SRX Subwoofers For Regional Entertainment Events

Logic Systems Sound and Lighting, a 20-year-old audio/video production company based in Valley Park, Missouri, continues to deploy JBL SRX728 subwoofers for events ranging from live concerts to presidential rallies across the Midwest. With a large arsenal of the subwoofers, owner Chip Self and his staff not only provide superior sound to the rental firm’s events, but also highlight the SRX728’s capabilities during local subwoofer technology workshops.

In his search for a subwoofer to replace his older, previous units, Self hoped to upgrade with a reliable, lightweight and durable loudspeaker that could be used for any venue or event. As an authorized JBL repair facility as well, Self had ever only seen one JBL SRX728 unit in for repair, which was ultimately how he was able to test it.

“The customer’s SRX728 impressed us because it was the first one we had ever seen come into our repair shop, even after they had been available on the market for well over a year,” stated Self.  “We’ve had great success with our own 728’s and even now, we have only ever seen two or three units in for repair, which is very impressive considering the number of these subwoofers circulating in the market today.”

Logic Systems crews have deployed their SRX’s for a variety of events including: the MidAmerica Concert Series; Live on the Levee Concert Series; Lil’ Wayne in the Round at St. Louis University; Nelly live at the Contemporary Art Museum in St. Louis; and the famous Rib America barbecue and musical festival in Missouri.

“The JBL subwoofers are easily transported and stacked at any event, and their quality is by far the best in the industry,” Self said. “Considering the extent to which we push our equipment, the durability alone is a major reason we stick with them.”

Everybody was very happy with the uniformity of the sound coverage, as well as the sound of the loudspeakers.”

R2W Provides Powerful JBL Loudspeaker System At PBR Rock Bar

Adding another staple to the Las Vegas bar, restaurant and nightclub scene, systems integration firm R2W designed and installed a complete JBL loudspeaker system at Fine Entertainment’s recently constructed PBR Rock Bar to support all audio from background restaurant music to televised sporting events and live rock concerts.

The 1,100-capacity venue, located in the Miracle Mile complex at the Las Vegas Planet Hollywood Hotel, combines a rock and roll atmosphere with a nightclub, American grill, more than 100 high-definition televisions and a mechanical bull to offer patrons a Vegas experience like no other. In addition, the PBR Rock Bar’s main dining hall transforms into a stage for live performances after dark.

R2W installed 21 JBL AM7212/95 12-inch full-range 2-way loudspeakers, five ASB6125 high-power dual subwoofers, eight AC28/26 2-way loudspeakers and four Control 24CT 2-way ceiling speakers for the 13,000 square-foot dining/bar area, along with 15 JBL Control 28T-60 2-high-output speakers for the 3,000-square foot outdoor patio area.

The PBR Rock Bar, which is licensed under the Professional Bullriders Association, also features BSS Soundweb London BLU-160, BLU-120 and BLU-8 for multi-zone control and signal distribution.

“Having worked with JBL loudspeakers for years, we have a lot of experience with the brand and these particular models. We are aware of the excellent cost-to-performance ratio that comes with JBL,” stated David Starck, system engineer for the Las Vegas-based R2W.  “Combining multiple series of loudspeakers from JBL, we supplied the Rock Bar with a system that easily transforms from the restaurant setting to a live sound hot spot.”

“We needed really high SPL levels for this install and the JBL speakers were perfect,” said Kevin Ruschmann, project manager, R2W.  “We chose the high-powered JBL system and it turned out very nicely.  Everything sounds great in the Rock Bar.”

Harman Professional Issues HiQnet System Architect™ Version 2.3: Improves Performance, Workflow Efficiency And Hardware Integration

Underscoring its unique commitment to providing the systems integration community with the most advanced, intuitive and current systems configuration and control toolsets, Harman Professional Systems Development and Integration Group (SDIG) introduces HiQnet System Architect™ Version 2.3.  In doing so, SDIG significantly improves the performance, functionality and user interface of System Architect, which, according to Adam Holladay, senior market manager, Harman Professional Systems Development and Integration Group, makes System Architect more useful, more effective and more efficient.

“SDIG is singularly committed to improving HiQnet System Architect on every criteria at every opportunity,” Holladay said today.  “We regularly examine the user experience, the performance engine and hardware integration and we religiously seek out new ways to improve each. With version 2.3, our base of 30,000 registered HiQnet users will see advances in the look and feel of the software, the speed and efficiency of the software and operational functionality.”

HiQnet System Architect version 2.3 includes an improved Custom Panel Designer and as a result, makes it easier for integration professionals to create customized control interfaces that reflect system functionality and usage requirements in system setup and operation.  Improvements to the underlying design engine mean that System Architect version 2.3 doesn’t just look better – it’s also faster.  Performance for meter controls is also improved so panel designers have greater versatility to monitor larger numbers of devices simultaneously.

Also new in version 2.3 is a simplified access control configuration interface.  This tool makes it easier to set up multiple user rights by providing a more immediate focus on the users, rather than the devices in the system.  The redesigned interface will particularly enhance the setup for when System Architect is used as the day-to-day operator’s audio system control application with the Kiosk Mode feature launched previously in September of this year.

On hardware integration, the SDIG team has been working closely with engineering teams from Crown and Lexicon to advance HiQnet System Architect’s support of their offerings. A case in point is System Architect’s support of momentary preset recall function for Crown amplifiers.  For the application of recalling amplifier presets from a contact closure, for example, the systems integration professional can now set each amplifier to return the state it was in prior to recalling the preset once the contact closure input is reset.

Lexicon’s PCM Series processors are widely deployed in live sound and studio applications and now can be easily integrated, programmed and controlled using HiQnet System Architect.

“When HiQnet was introduced it was truly revolutionary,” Holladay continued.  “But today we seek to ensure it’s evolutionary in the sense that considers and incorporates developments in the network world, the software domain, the AV hardware manufacturing sector— within Harman and increasingly with non-Harman entities — and, of course, the systems integration community.  We’re satisfied that HiQnet System Architect version 2.3 is comprehensive, cutting-edge and very useful.

Along with 2.3, HiQnet also launched a new look-and-feel website, including additional online training resources.

HiQnet System Architect version 2.3 can be downloaded free of charge from http://www.hiqnet.harmanpro.com.

Euro Media France OB Upgrades With Studer Vista 9 Console

France’s leading broadcast facility provider, Euro Media France (EMF), has become the most recent operator to install a new Studer Vista 9 digital console into one of its OB vehicles.

Their XL2 mid-range HD truck is one of a fleet of 22 OB’s, which have been amalgamated under the EMF umbrella since the merger of subsidiaries EMT, SFP and VCF at the beginning of this year, and one of six HD-equipped vehicles. The 13.6-metre truck supports up to 24 cameras and incorporates a VTR area, monitor stack, production area—and now a top specification audio mixing front end.

The new console was supplied by Audiopole to replace an old Studer D950—which was the first digital desk that SFP ever bought during their days as an independent. It is one of several Vista 9 consoles already supplied by Studer’s French distributor since its launch in June of this year.

The new 52-fader Vista 9 sets new standards in flexibility and usability. Configured 88 I/O AES-EBU, with 48 input Mic/Line and 32 analogue outputs, it offers two fibre optical stage boxes, including 24 input Mic/Line, eight AES-EBU I/O, two MADI I/Os and one Ethersound I/O—and has 5.1 and Dolby surround capabilities.

The sale was facilitated by Audiopole director, Jean-Philippe Blanchard, who over the years has been responsible for equipping SFP and VCF with the entire suite of Vista consoles, including the first Vista 5 (and one of the first Vista 7s)—as well as the D950—during their days as independents.

The XL2 OB specialises in major sporting events, such as Tour de France and Premiership Rugby for Canal+, as well as talk shows and light entertainment, such as Le Plus Grand Cabaret du Monde for France Television.

Following discussions with Blanchard, EMF’s Technical Operations Director Franck Fradet first saw the Vista 9 at the Soundcraft Studer headquarters in Potters Bar, UK back in May this year.

This was all the convincing he needed and delivery took place in August—just days before its debut at Premiership rugby match in Perpignan. Franck Fradet was impressed with the immediate stability of the software and the fact it could be pressed into action ‘straight out of the box’.

Fradet also noted a number of other key features. The Control Bay meter section can be configured to suit, and the operator has absolute freedom to place input, as well as master channels, anywhere across the surface. “Everything can be done in the central part of the desk, which is important in OB applications. It is a compact and economical solution.”

As for the highly advanced Vistonics™ interface with innovative TFT-based metering (allowing precision feedback on signal status) and FaderGlow™, Fradet recognises that “Studer has really worked hard on the visual element.”

He adds, “The HISTORY mode is another great feature—this, along with the flexibility, speed of configuration and visualisation are hugely important features, while FaderGlow is useful because it means I see less tape on the desk!”

The HISTORY feature, in particular, has been highlighted by Vista 9 users as it records events such as overloads in the audio path of each channel, and highlights them in red on the channel waveform. The operator can then review which channel had such an event, up to 30 seconds after the event has occurred.

Finally Franck Fradet pinpoints the importance of Studer’s advanced redundancy in an OB context. “It has been implemented in a far superior way on this desk,” he notes. Dual PSU’s as well as a dual control system ensures that component failure never means loss of control over the mix, while a redundant network system keeps up the vital communication to the DSP core.”

All this contributes to a market-leading broadcast mixing environment. “I think the Vista 9 now offers the best surface anywhere because of its quick access and configuration,” he concludes. “There is never much time for training and one of the advantages of the Vista 9 was that our engineers were already trained on other Vista desks, so they were able to work with the console quickly.

“It’s really important for broadcasters such as Canal+ and France Television to know that our OB’s are up to date with this level of flexibility and functionality.”

Based in eastern Paris, Euro Media France is part of the large pan-European broadcaster, Euro Media Group, formed in 2007. France remains the most important territory, and is today responsible for 50% of group turnover, with resources and logistics now shared.

Lexicon® LXP Native Reverb Plug-In Bundle Creates Atmospheric Soundscapes for Film Composer Frederik Wiedmann

Frederik Wiedmann is a film composer known for his powerful, compelling and emotionally evocative movie scores. He has composed music for more than 20 feature films including Return to House on Haunted Hill, The Hills Run Red, Mirrors 2, Beneath, Hellraiser: Revelations and Ecstasy, as well music for various TV series.

Wiedmann is equally adapt at drama, action, horror, thriller, comedy and adventure, and is extremely particular about achieving the perfect sonic texture to accompany the on-screen action. One of the tools he constantly relies on is the Lexicon LXP Native Reverb Plug-In Bundle, a versatile software package that offers classic Lexicon reverb algorithms along with a host of studio presets and extensive sound-tailoring capabilities.

“I’ve always prized the natural ambience and inviting quality of Lexicon reverbs, and I’m thrilled that Lexicon now has a native plug-in version of their hardware reverbs,” said Wiedmann. “I like to use plug-ins rather than hardware, because I like to be able to have all my sounds as files that can be instantly recalled, so I can just open my file or template and everything is set as it should be.”

Wiedmann continued, “The LXP is an outstanding plug-in that completely does justice to the hardware version – and has changed the way I work. The ability to recall a cue and its reverb setting with 100 percent accuracy is a great asset and time saver.”

The PC- and Macintosh®-compatible Lexicon LXP Native Reverb Plug-In Bundle is designed to work with popular DAWs like Pro Tools and Logic, as well as with any other VST®, Audio Unit™ or RTAS®-compatible host. It offers four of Lexicon’s most renowned algorithms – Chamber, Hall, Plate and Room – plus 220 finely crafted studio presets.

Its intuitive user interface provides easy access to key parameters, with a graphical real-time full-color display that illustrates the reverb tail, frequency content and impulse response. Virtual input and output meters provide ready indication of audio levels, and presets can be stored in a DAW-independent format that can be transferred to a different DAW.

“I am using the LXP plug-in extensively for my film music, for live orchestral mixing as well as mixing solo vocalists and instruments.” Wiedmann noted. He concluded, “The body and the decay of the reverbs have so much ‘life’ in them – simply beautiful.”

The Lexicon LXP Native Reverb Plug-In Bundle is Native only, and requires iLok authorization. It is currently available at a suggested retail price of $599.95. To activate a free 7-day trial of the Plug-In, a user can visit www.lexiconpro.com for an iLok authentication key.

PRG Rocks Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting Ceremony with JBL VerTec Subcompact Line Arrays

Continuing one of the nation’s most time-honored holiday traditions, Production Resource Group (PRG) deployed JBL’s new subcompact VerTec® line array system to highlight musical performances during the annual Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in New York.  With performances by Mariah Carey, Josh Groban and Susan Boyle, along with an appearance by the Radio City Rockettes, PRG ensured the bundled-up crowd was completely immersed in holiday entertainment. Staged on Tuesday, November 30, the Tree Lighting Ceremony featured the traditional large tree, a 74-foot Norway spruce, with 30,000 LED lights on five miles of wire.

Ground-stacking four JBL VT4886 subcompact line array elements on top of two VT4883 subcompact arrayable subwoofers with arrays positioned on each side of the stage, PRG turned the world-famous ice rink into center stage for the national live telecast of the Tree Lighting Ceremony, which aired on NBC as part of the “Christmas in Rockefeller Center” special.

“JBL VerTec line array systems have been the reliable, go-to system for our annual work at the Tree Lighting Ceremony as well as other major projects around the country,” said Bob Rendon, vice president of PRG.  “For several years, NBC has trusted our rigs to entertain the excited guests surrounding the center and we rely on JBL speakers to ensure everything is perfect.”

“The event was a complete success,” continued Rendon, “Our VerTec line arrays always perform to expectations.  They provide the perfect fill and coverage for the rink area and really allow the performances to be enjoyed by the hundreds of viewers in the sunken area underneath the tree.”

Crown Audio Awarded ISO 9001:2008 Certification At Elkhart Manufacturing Facility

Crown Audio today announced it has been approved for conformance of quality assurance in accordance with the International Organization for Standards (ISO) 9001:2008. Operating at such standards allows Crown to respond more quickly to marketplace and customer demand while maintaining consistently high levels of quality in all facets of its amplifier production.

Commenting on what ISO 9001:2008 registration will mean from the end-user’s perspective, Marc Kellom, Director, Marketing for Crown stated that customers can purchase Crown amplifiers with increased confidence. “It is reassuring to have a highly qualified third party audit your products and processes and certify that they consistently meet the highest quality standards.”

Certification to ISO 9001:2008 is a model for quality assurance in design, manufacturing and customer care. ISO 9001:2008 registration applies to all products manufactured under the quality system in place at the registered site. Registration requires demonstration of a total quality control system in five distinct areas including Product Realization, Quality Management, Management Responsibility, Resource Management and Measurement and Analysis and Improvement.
